I like Ellis as a possibility, and certainly he's more expendable after they acquired Subban, but who steps into Nashville's second pair? They don't appear to have anyone capable to take his slot.

Swapping weber for subban doesn't really change their blueline depth

Lehtera spent four seasons in the KHL. I wonder if he speaks Russian.

Kreider/Stepan/Miller
Zuccarello/Zibanejad/Hayes
Vesey/Lehtera/Buchnevich
Pirri/Lindberg/Fast

McDonagh/Klein
Staal/Shattenkirk
Skjei/McIlrath

Solid idea except I hate Hayes on the wing

Not on a one-for-one basis, no. But Subban represents higher offense output from RHS and on PP. Weber doesn't exactly make Ellis redundant. Subban does. Not to mention Subban young enough that theres no chance Ellis will ever supplant him. With only Weber ahead of him, Ellis eventually could have made it to first pairing.

I think Nashville will be more than content with a top 4 of Subban, Ellis, Josi, and Ekholm locked up for $20M for the next three years. That team has a lot of really solid pieces, but they need some depth down the middle and Rinne not to fall completely off a cliff.

I really like the kid Fabbro they just drafted, and I'm curious to see how he handles BU this season.

The brilliant minds at NHL network voted Matt Niskanen as the best shutdown defenseman on Team USA for the World Cup. Over McDonagh, Suter, and practically every other defenseman on the team.

It seriously blows my minds that such ****ing idiots can maintain employment with such awful analysis.

It sounds like Dagoon lives in Nashville during the summer. Lots of NHL scouts and execs around that area per him are saying they are hearing lots on the Rangers and Zuccarello. Not necessarily with the Preds.

No surprise to me Zuccarello, Nash and Klein are available. I still think we see a couple more moves before camp with 2 of the 3 above.

The Pirri signing makes me believe it's Zuccarello or Nash. Depending on the return, Klein may be moved.

I'd want at least a good prospect and a 2nd rounder for Klein.

Assuming we get a RHD back in a potential Nash/Zucc deal, which seems likely.

it doesn't matter

i don't care what larry brooks says. the only reason he said they can't afford shatty was cause of money tied up in guys like nash girardi and staal. If one of them moves it's a different story. I don't think they mind having a trade off in salary. I love zuc just as much as you guys however shatty is a year younger and for at least this season their cap hits are the same. he is a proven 50+ pt defender, excellent puck mover, great as PP QB, and would make an ideal partner for McD or staal. he is also right in the age wheel house for NYR's new leadership unit. Steps, krieds, McD. He would be an excellent mentor/tutor for a young guy like skjei. Hank is older and is the face of NYR, but the leadership is around the 25-27 year old range with a lot of new blood infused. Shatty fits the bill. as I have stated many times already a lot of people were clamoring to pay a 30 year old left handed dman in yandle. but are relunctant to give a 27 year old right handed shatty 6 years 6 to 6.5 mill per. I wouldn't think twice. Offensive dmen age well and by the time his contract is up he will only be 33 34. not over the hill by any means. no brainer for me. it is whats best for the team now and for the next 4 plus years while this young unit grows together..

Mcd Shatty
Staal Klein
skjei Girardi

holden/McIrath. klein possibly moved if mcI ready. and hopefully girardi has a bounce back season with reduced minutes and a mobile partner and is easier to move next year with only 3 years remaining on his term

I certainly agree with you the only thing is, I'd rather use our expendable assets to get a different Dman simply because if he has as much interest playing here as it's speculated he does than we can potentially sign him in the offseason along with the other Dman we have traded for. If he doesn't sign it's not a make or brake us move but could you potentially see what a turn around our D could look like next year?

McDonagh Shattenkirk
Skjei Ellis
Staal/Holden/Graves McIlrath

The other thing to mention is it seems unlikely we move either Staal or Girardi and if we trade for a Dman it forces us to buyout Girardi or risk losing a solid impact player to expansion.

And what if another team throws something like 7/49 to Shattenkirk and he walks?

According to all the reports, he really, really, really wants to play for us. I don't count on promises and preferences when it comes to signing players though

From what Jay has said so far, the idea is to only finalize a trade for Shattenkirk if he agrees to an extension. There won't be a team able to offer a 7/$49 million contract.

Depends what that extension is. 6/36 I'm ok with. 7/49 I'm not.

I'd go as high as $6.3 million per...agreed about the 7th year. If the Rangers remain adamant about not allowing trading for Shattenkirk becoming a Yandle situation, then I'm not sure there's another available Dman that could have as positive an effect on the Rangers' chances this season.

Shattenkirk will be 28 when his new contract starts next year. Yandle is 29 now. All the people who did not want to sign Yandle because of his age should take a long hard look at the contract Shattenkirk is expecting

To be honest, I'd pay out the nose for Parayko is we're going after a Blues defenseman. Kid is an absolute stud, going off the eye test and stats.
