Also, apparently the majority of our current players have become completely expendable. Losing and winning are funny things. After the 2nd cup, most here wouldn't package Toffoli and/or Pearson for anything outside of a bonafide star player. Now, they could be had for the likes of Ryan Pulock, Mark Pysyk and Erik Gudbranson. Can't make this stuff up, folks.
Who said that? We have a lot of players that need top-six minutes who are locked up long-term. Here are some basic facts:
1. Losing Lucic would be terrible asset management. Lucic fit in extremely well with the Kings' system and style of play. We need to keep Lucic.
2. It should go without saying, but Kopitar and Carter are untouchable. They comprise arguably the second-best one-two punch in the league. Kopitar is our new captain and Carter has close to the best contract in the league. Both players are locked up until at least 2022.
3. Marian Gaborik's and Dustin Brown's contracts would be very difficult to move (and with Brown, likely impossible). These two players are making too much money to be stuck in our bottom six. If they aren't getting (and producing with) top six minutes, we might as well just trade our assets and start a rebuild now. We won't be able to compete with one-third of our bottom-six eating up over $10 million in cap space.
So we now know a few things. Kopitar and Carter are our rocks, Gaborik and Brown need to produce, and we need to re-sign Lucic.
Lucic - Kopitar - Gaborik
Brown - Carter - xxx
Assuming that Lucic does in fact re-sign, and assuming that contract will be a long-term contract similar to Gaborik, that means that our top-six (barring movement) is basically set in stone until at least the 2020-21 season!
That brings us to our next point: Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli are both due for raises at the end of next season. Thankfully, both of them are still RFAs, which gives the Kings a fair amount of leeway for contract negotiations. The downside is that both of them will be getting raises, and for Toffoli, likely a substantial one. I want to emphasize that I do not want to trade Toffoli or Pearson unless the piece coming back is a young, second-pairing defenseman.
But it does bring up another interesting point. Is there room for both of them in the top-six? If so, who? Are we hoping that an expansion team picks up Brown or Gaborik? That doesn't sound like something we should hang our hats on.
So let's assume, for the sake of simplicity, that the Kings can trade Pearson or Toffoli in a one-for-one swap for a defender of equivalent performance, age, and talent. What would be more useful to the team? Having a top-six winger that plays bottom-six minutes, or having a top-four defender that plays top-four minutes?
If we can find the right defenseman to trade one of those two for, we should do it. No one in the system is promising enough to fill a top-four role. Lombardi hoped McNabb would, but he hasn't shown it yet and I don't want to keep hoping. McNabb is an NHL defenseman, just not one I want to rely on to anchor our defense.
The only other option that I can see is signing a defenseman like Yandle or Hamhuis and letting Lucic walk.
Option One:
We trade Pearson for someone like Mark Pysyk (just as an example).
Lucic - Kopitar - Gaborik
Brown - Carter - Toffoli
Muzzin - Doughty
Martinez - Pysyk
Option Two:
We sign Yandle and lose Lucic to free agency.
Brown - Kopitar - Gaborik
Pearson - Carter - Toffoli
Muzzin - Doughty
Yandle - Martinez
Option Three:
We sign Lucic and trade Toffoli for someone like Travis Hamonic.
Lucic - Kopitar - Gaborik
Pearson - Carter - Brown
Muzzin - Doughty
Martinez - Hamonic
