I'm stoked to see what Andreoff's game looks like--does he pick up where he left off or was that just a hot streak (not the goals in particular, just the confidence and decisiveness and being in the right spots).

Well the good news this Summer is Voynov (and his cap) is back in Russia and the Kings can fill the position on their defense.

Trouba: due a new contract, maybe WPG moves him. Will be costly

Shattenkirk: Signed for 1 more year at 4.25, Blues probably asking a lot.

Harmonic: rescinded trade request, could he still be available?

Barrie: Judging by Colorados release today, they weren't happy with the market price. No longer available.

Car: Wiz, RHD missed all of last year, one year left on contract. Murphy may struggle to make their roster, couple of long shots

J.Schultz:  Will probably be a UFA after not being qualified.

Did I miss anyone? Looks like pickings are pretty thin.

Edit: Offersheet the ducks D

This is good news

Wait! Are you telling me the cap is going up? I thought there was an army of economists predicting the implosion of the NHL after the cap plummeted because of some Canadian Loonie.

edit: Lurks over to LGK to see what the reaction is over there.

Considering the Bettman has already said that the Loonie cost 100-200M in revenue.
And with that we are looking at very little growth.
Without the escalator the cap would have been stagnant. And there was no guarantee the players would use the escalator. Last year they voted against it but Fehr convinced them to go back and re-vote. They then passed it.
For all we know we are still looking at nearly a flat cap with it.
Which is what I think will happen. A very small growth to like 72-73M.

While true, never underestimate peoples ability to vote for the easy way out. Using the Escalator means more money for the UFA's, less likely existing guys on the roster will be moved due to cap shortages. Lot's of other variables go into the calculation then just the crap economy. That was always the point.

I think DL will make a trade for Greiss. I remember reading somewhere that Dean tried to get him before and it didn't work out. NYI has lots of goalies right now.

Scrivens is a UFA.

DLs comments on not wanting to be a goalie factory for the league or not being able to keep groomed goalies was interesting.

So how much cap space do we have now ?

$3,721,440 is the present number assuming the cap stays flat at $71.4M, however this includes Vinny's $2.25M, so if you exclude that, it's $5,971,440.

Assuming the cap goes up to say $73M as has been reported to be the approximate number, and you have $7,571,440*.

*Note: this number could go down by $250K if Vinny's July 2nd bonus (the reason he has yet to officially retire) is counted against the cap of the Kings and Flyers.

And we still would have the option of moving King $1.95 million and Clifford $1.6 million which clears an additional $3.55 million or $11+ million...

They really do need to find a way to rid themselves of those contracts and give Andreoff and Mersch the opportunity to fill their roles at a much lesser cost.

We can also send Scuderi to the minors and is cap hit will be what is it $225k or something like that.

One of King or Clifford absolutely has to go.

I would still prefer to keep King as he is more versatile, Clifford is a fourth liner making $1.6 mill. Just to much for a team up against the cap. His intimidating facewashes will be missed though.

But it goes quickly.

Just guys from Ontario that might make the team next year:
Forbort - $863,333(RFA)
Mersch - $786,666
Gravel - $667,500
Dowd - $600,000(RFA)
Budaj - $600,000

That adds up to $3,517,499 of cap space. A little more if you figure Forbort and Dowd get a few extra bucks. Plus you always have to worry about Toffoli and Pearson needing new contracts next summer. They get some extra space if Scuderi is in Ontario next year, but unless you know for sure that Greene is too hurt to play, they can't spend his money. There's a reason Lombardi has to count every cent with Lucic.

yup if he gets claimed then bonus we have no cap hit, if not (which is likely) it would be a decent $225K insurance injury. Chicago ad Pittsburgh would still be on the hook for the full hit of what they retained if Scuds does get sent to the AHL

Agree 100%, hopefully Dean can move including Clifford before opening night, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved sometime next season.

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

agree with keeping king over clifford however it would depend on the difference in return.
I.E. If King can get a 2nd but Clifford a 5th i would deal King.

Looking at the numbers, assuming Scuderi is sent to the minors and Dowd is retained at $600K, the Kings will have roughly $64.4M committed to...

12 forwards: Kopitar, Carter, Gaborik, Brown, Toffoli, Pearson, King, Clifford, Nolan, Shore, Andreoff, Dowd

7 defensemen: Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, Greene, McNabb, Gravel, Scuderi (assigned to minors)

1 goaltender: Quick

1 buyout: Mike Richards ($1.57M cap penalty including his buyout)

Assuming the salary cap is at an even $73M, that leaves the Kings with roughly $8.5M in cap space.

Clearly that's not a complete roster, so there will be some guys who will be graduating from the minors who will cut into that figure. The Kings will have some room to make an addition or two (or three if you count a backup goalie), but it will be tight.

I think DL will make a trade for Greiss. I remember reading somewhere that Dean tried to get him before and it didn't work out. NYI has lots of goalies right now.

Isles beat writer seemed adamant that Halak would be the odd man out with the Islanders. Greiss for the time being is their incumbent starter. Greiss figured he'd get more playing time with the Islanders than the Kings, so that's why he ended up signing there.

Elliotte Friedman mentioned a few months back that Garth Snow liked Jimmy Howard (both are alums of Maine) but that was before Greiss did reasonably well down the stretch.

A Halak/Howard swap would be somewhat interesting. For Detroit, Halak is cheaper and has one less year on his deal. But in either case, I doubt that the Isles are looking to move Greiss right now.

Yes it goes by quickly but we would then have 5 players that can fill holes on the bottom 6 and in our defense... 5 is better than 2 in this case.... Also i believe Gravel's cap hit is already included in our cap figure.....
