Unless he falls flat on his face in WPG and thus considerably lowers his projected contract potential, signing Hayes would be a terrible move for the Rangers.

6-7 years at nearly $7M with a NTC for a 2nd/3rd line center isn’t a move a team should do in the early phases of a rebuild.

If they could have locked him up 5/5 this summer with reasonable trade clauses that would have been a different story.

at 7x7?

I'll pass.
I like the idea of trading a player, getting a decent return and then resigning the traded player. It's as if you got in this case Lemieux and a first for perhaps a few million dollars more than you would have paid to resign Hayes a year earlier. The Rangers need to secure talent in as many different ways as possible under the system.

That would be an awful contract, and I like Hayes.

This is like an 8 course meal and we’ve only eaten salad (with the wrong fork probably) and people want to know what’s for dessert.

It’s a long process and Gorton doesn’t know what we have or don’t have. No one does. It takes time

In theory it should be. My fear is they decide to pull the roast out of the oven before it’s done and slather it with KC Masterpiece.

Yeah these are my thoughts exactly. I think the team got further away from Contention today— not closer! Gave away a 26 year old center in Hayes who absolutely could have been your second or third line center for years to come and got a late 1st round pick that is a crap shoot to become anywhere near the player Hayes is. I’m not impressed with accumulating picks. They are just shots in the dark basically. The strategy better be to package this junk and move up into the top 3 on draft day and take a generational talent. Beyond that, this team is going into the abyss real quick and I see absolutely no light at the end of the tunnel beyond more problems and hope type picks!
Not bad for another teams first rounder you stole for nothing due to a loophole. Hayes is going to make some GM regret his next contract. I hope it's not ours.

Yea agreed.

Cant pay him $7 million per. He is 2nd/3rd line center tweener. Thats just too rich.

I only want to pay Kreider.

Would like to see us get Smith’s contract out of here in the offseason with money retained in a trade. Namestnikov, I like, but think we could do better with that extra $4 million AAV.

I don't post on here that often, but overall, I like what the NYR did today; the Zuccarello trade; we'll have to wait and see (I was thinking a 2nd rd pick and a prospect). Unlikely they get 2 first rd picks, don't see Dallas getting to the Western Conference Final; he may re-sign there, but likely depends on how they do in the playoffs/what direction they pursue after this season. I hope he's back in the lineup before the playoffs begin. Could theoretically have 4 first round picks; likely tho they'll have 2-3. Hopefully they use those picks wisely. They still need high end talent, not projected 3rd-4th liners/5-6th defencemen.

Good to keep adding assets, still think they are a couple of years away from contention. This year's free agents appears overall to be weak ; I'd continue to move the rebuild along. This isn't the time yet to start moving young assets for veterans in a go for it. I'd listen to offers for Kreider this summer, either draft time or after Free Agency begins; definitely at the trade deadline in February (likely). Still young, a year from UFA. A team that disappoints in the playoffs might think he's a piece that can help get them over the top. Moving Zibanejad is highly unlikely unless Jeff Gorton is blown away.

Im convinced the Rangers could get someone to take Staal/Smith at half off in the offseason. Although I think the Rangers might want to keep Staal around. No more buyouts please.

That Zucc did not get a 1 st straight up is nutty with elite skills also GM of Dallas mention this in his 1 min. brief interview - that`s why GM get blinded by an 1st overall pick like Rick Nash last year with Boston. And Nash was worth it for sure - and I did not see his early retirement at all even with his concussion history.

I go a bit off topic, but think about player value as whole, but a lot of action this TDL with Stone, Matt, Zucc - I`m overall happy with GM`s contribution in NHL and Jeff Gorton did a hell of a lot more compare to Jim Benning with Canucks, haha.

I have faith that Gorton has NOT waivered from what he has stated all along. They are building through the draft and staying the course.

He said he’d listen on Kreider and unless blown away he wouldn’t move him, he didn’t.

He said he’d change the culture and move the UFAs and he did.

He said the kids wouldn’t be thrown to the wolves and each player would be dealt with according to their own specific set of circumstances and they would be developed accordingly and he (along with Quinn) has.

Any direction is better than no direction and so far I see a clear, determined direction in a positive manner. Quick? Not necessarily but I don’t see him rushing it now at this point.

Ahahaha

In all seriousness, sucks that they couldn't nail down an extension for Hayes. That tells me that he wants to not be in a place for Calgary, and The optimist in me tells me he may be a target for the 2019 offseason

I am fairly certain that Gorton called in Hayes and said I can’t sign you now, but quid pro que Kevin. Quid pro que. If you can convince Trouba to sign here, we will sign you too.

for anyone who is interested, here is Gorton's presser

FWIW, the tweet about Gorton moving picks for players was taken horribly out of context. He simply presented it as a possibility but also said that it was way to early to make any kind of determinations on what hes going to do with all of these picks. Not to different than what he said last year.

Glad to see that it was taken out of context. Making win-now moves in the offseason seemed pretty out of character with what Gorton has done over the past year.

Reactions: Rangers in 7
I figure we can either build a team the right or the cheap way. Getting Hayes and Zuccarello for free in the offseason is the cheap way.

This team would be Ottawa level with a different goalie, even a good one. So how is it logical to look at 2 key ingredients to this turd sandwich and work it into the next recipe. Those guys aren't bad players, the bread if you will, but they aren't good enough to mask the crap. So if you decide to bring back all of Zibanejed, Kreider, Hayes, Zuccarello, buch, Namestinkov, Vesey, etc, while being stuck with 3 overpaid defensemen for 2 years, you will get the same results. Just move forward.

I truly believe gorton moved on and if he liked what he saw from this core he would have extended both. It's better to retain a good piece than to play the lottery.
