He really was surprisingly effective and seemed like a solid dude.
SN played a special on him recently, it was really really good. I had no idea his father inlaw was the former longtime Pittsbugh Steelers coach Bill Cowher.

Saw that too, I agree it was awesome

What a good guy he seems to be, he would be a great guy to have in any lockerroom. My respect for him really increased after watching that.

I could see Gaudreau go for the long term deal right away, but Monahan I Think will either sign a 2-3 bridge deal around 4 per year, or go for something like the Hall contract 6x6. Either or gives him a big opening for a huge deal after anyways. It seems like if there's any Flame we may be able to convince to go a bit cheaper for more depth its Mony.

We've treated all our young guys really well, which may end up helping us a bit in the long run. We took a chance with Gaudreau, were patient with him, and gave a player his size a big chance and vote of confidence that other teams may not have done. Monahan played his way on the team his first year, we didn't pull any crap with him trying to save an entry level year. Bennett played through the playoffs, and we didn't pull the crap that other fanbases said we should do and scratch him to save an entry level year, we kept him in through the run.

I'm just saying if I'm one of those players, I'd remember that cone negotiations, and probably have a little more flexibility. When you know your organization and your boss's will treat you well and you can be happy, it can make a huge difference. Not saying they will sign super cheap or anything, but there's potential to work with them to help the team a bit.

Not sure why we're talking Flames contracts in the Around the League thread.

Anyways... Kesler gets his term and contract (6.875m AAV over 6years) and hopefully it bites Anaheim in years 3-6. Really dumb contract IMO but good for everyone else. Don't think there's an NMC or NTC.

Dallas signs Oduya which helps their situation on defence, but I don't think he's that good of a blueliner anyways - basically 4-5 on a good team, kind of like Russell. Regardless, the contract is fair at 3.75m AAV over 2 years.

And lastly, Schultz gets a 3.9m contract for a single year - a prove-yourself contract. The dollar amount is insanely high for a player of his calibre and proven ability (IMO he shouldn't be more than 2.5m right now) but it's only a single year and it's because his qualifying offer, if I understand correctly, was slated to be something stupid like 3.6m anyways because of MacTavish's previous contract. Wonder if cutting the Schultz contract was ever in Chiarelli's mind.

There's no point cutting Schultz now. Look at a guy like Russell, or even early Gio. Didn't look like anything special until years into their careers. Edmonton has had a joke of a coaching staff for a while now, constantly rotating coaches. His defense is horrible, but offensively he is good. He could still end up a Wideman type player. Not a top pairing guy,but a good second or third pair power play specialist. There's a coach who is good now and may be better at playing to his strengths and improving his weakness's.

The next two seasons in particular will shape what his career looks like.

Kesler has already had some pretty significant surgeries (hip x2, shoulder) in his career and with his playing style, I could see that continuing. And once you get into your 30s, the body's ability to recover starts to decline. He's not a guy I'd want to give a 6-year deal to at this point (or 7 years since it's an extension after this upcoming season).

Thing with Kesler is though, he's getting that deal no matter what. If the Ducks don't give him that, he's gonna walk. Not all that different to our situation with Gio.

Glad to have him back the the fold; I couldn't find contract details anywhere, is he just back for another year?

Doesn't want a two-way deal.

I guess it's no surprise that he's rejected his qualifying offer, and it's no surprise he didn't file for arbitration.

Still, it seems like Sven has hired the drama llama as his agent or something, none of this should be leaking to the press. It just makes him look bad.

Sigh. I really don't understand what Sven is doing anymore honestly. I want him to do well but every time his name comes up, there's some kind of drama attached to it. I have a hard time seeing him making it as a pro with this kind of stuff always happening.

On the other hand, he's not our problem anymore. So part of me has to chuckle.

Is this a repost or did he reject another offer?

edit: Not a repost. Just saw the date.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't that trade basically work out to be Sven for Rasmus Andersson?

He just wants a one-way deal. Not a big deal really. He is trying to get the compensation he can get. His agent might be doing some pushing. Everyone wants the best possible deal for themselves.

Yeah, I had to check too, although the rejection of the qualifying offer may simply be additional news about wanting a one-way deal.

Yeah, my thoughts as well.
