Wonder what kinda deal Franson will get now.
Only thing good for us with the Ehrhoff contract is if Franson comes here cheap because of the market.
I'm surprised he's still out there, not that I want him on the Flames but given his play in Toronto you'd think someone would be willing to give him a decent contract, maybe a team like Boston.
Yeah, they need a big RHD.
Really unsure on why Franson hasn't been signed yet. Is he just being too picky? I can't see no teams being interested in him.
Having either one of them on the ice is even more horrid. I doubt Nakladal was signed for more AHL depth and we all hope Wotherspoon gets a spot anyway.I would welcome it as well. The only thing I wouldn't like is Smid and Engelland as the 7th and 8th Dmen. 5M+ on two players sitting in the pressbox is horrid.
Not sure you implied Russell is good offensively or not but in case you did: he had 0.28 primary points/60 at even strength last season (0.44 in all situation combined). His shooting% was way too low even for a defenseman so he'll probably score a few more goals next season but still, Russell is bad at producing offensively. Can't imagine the Flames being interested in Franson. Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton and Wideman are all safe bets to produce offensively and Russell is no slouch. Substituting Engelland with Franson would also result in a complete lack of truculence from the back end; can't see that happening either.
Well, duh. At this point it's more about "out of ice, out of mind" than trading the two. Both Smid and Engelland are untradeable at this stage. No team in this cap climate is going to be interested in bottom pairing/press box defensemen with hefty cap hits and multiple years left on their contracts. Especially one with concussion issues.
Doesn't really work if Smid and Engelland are #6 and #7.And Treliving will be cognizant of needing to keep spots available for the likes Wotherspoon, Morrison, Nakladal and other prospects. No need to return to a Sutter era reputation of burying prospects for mercenary free agents.
Smid has neck issues, not concussion issues. And that Sutter era reputation is a narrative that [mod: is] completely inaccurate. It's time to accept facts, lots of kids got opportunities but our prospect pool sucked so they never became much. Can't imagine the Flames being interested in Franson. I have a feeling that means Voynov won't be back with LAKings sign Ehrhoff. West got a lil harder. I wonder if we can snatch Forbort...

Maybe, but management has made it clear they want a guy like that on defense. They've made it clear they're not going to ice a team incapable of pushing back. Pure fantasy hockey to to go for the names instead of trying to build a functioning, diverse roster. Engelland is mediocre to bad, sure, but it's pretty much a guarantee that when his time is done, his replacement will be in a similar mold (but hopefully better). Not a big fan of going after Franson; would rather go after Wiercoch. But on a 1-year deal, it's a different story. And Engelland's "truculence" is barely existent; he's too slow to get the proper gap distance to make those hits and as a result, he was more of a stop post than a physical presence.
Well, good luck with that. If they're not injured/on LTIR, and there's no legitimate reason to think either will be to start the season, keeping both as healthy scratches means risking an extra forward (e.g. Shore or Jooris) on waivers. And that's not happening either. Nor is it all that realistic to suggest that ownership would consent to paying either Smid or Engelland's NHL salaries while they toil in the AHL.Well, duh. At this point it's more about "out of ice, out of mind" than trading the two.
Still better than if they're #7 and #8.Doesn't really work if Smid and Engelland are #6 and #7.
Sharks sign Frazer McLaren. Well, we might as well just give in to the 2016 Pacific division champion San Jose Sharks. No point in even playing.
Yeah. Doesn't make too much sense to me either.Kind of seems weird that they didn't just re-sign John Scott, who was apparently a favourite in the locker-room.
Yeah. Doesn't make too much sense to me either.
Well, we got John Scott, Frazer McLaren and Brian McGrattan in our division.. how truculent.
