So lets use that same time span 2001-2011, where and how many first rounders they had:

2001: Adrian Foster, 28th overall (They also had 4 2nd rounders though)
-Next 5 draftees: G Adam Munro, C David Steckel, D Matt Spiller, C Derek Roy, W Timofei Shishkanov. Foster was a reach
2002: Traded (Joe Nieuwendyk )
2003: Zach Parise 17th overall (Traded up from 22nd( Which in itself was a pick swap from St. Louis))
-Next 5 draftees: W/C Eric Fehr, C Getzlaf, W/D Brent Burns, D Mark Stuart, W/C MA Pouliot. Getzlaf would be nice, but had consistency issues, but that Parise kid though.
2004: Travis Zajac, 20th overall (Traded up from 22nd)
-Next 5 draftees: W Wolski, W Lukas Kaspar, D Andrej Meszároš, W Kris Chucko, C Robbie Schremp. Devils where incredibly stupid by drafting the great Rob Schremp. Devils did great here by trading up and nabbing Zajac
2005: Niclas Bergfors, 23rd (No pick movement due to Sidney Crosby sweepstakes)
-Next 5 draftees: W TJ Oshie, W/C Andrew Cogliano, D/W Pelech (our Pelech), D Joe Finley, D Matt Niskanen. Oshie would've been nice but was seen as reach.
2006: Matt Corrente, 30th (Traded down from 25th)
-Next 5 draftees: C Tomas Kana, D Carl Sneep, W Igor Makarov, G Michal Neuvirth, W François Bouchard. Devils didn't miss much.
2007: Traded pick (Cap dumping Malahkov)
2008: Mattias Tedenby, 24th (Traded down from 21st)
-Next 5 draftees: C/W Greg Nemisz, C/W Tyler Ennis, D John Carlsson, Viktor Tikhonov, Daulton Levielle. Carlsson would've been nice or Jordan Eberle had they kept 21.
2009: Jacob Josefsson, 20th (Traded up from 23rd)
-Next 5 draftees: D John Moore, Jordan Schroeder, D Tom Erixon, C/W Marcus Johansson, W Jordan Caron. Devils picked the Wrong swede here. And so did sWe.
2010: Traded pick (Ilya Kovalchuk)
2011: 4th overall, (Moved up due to Draft Lottery)
- Next 5 draftees, C Strome, C Zibby, C Scheifele, C Couturier, D Dougie. Larsson is BPA and it's still a toss up.

9 first rounders from 2001-2011 (average pick being 18.444...) The 4 overall really skewed that average other than that they where picking 23rd (22.75).
Not many players in that range that could make any impact. Bad drafting or not.

Lou Lamoriello just finished his presser in Toronto, was a good listen and sounds like its a good hire for an organization thats going through a full rebuild.

He said if Dubas wasn't the next GM its his fault. I think as Hox said hes been brought in for a year or two to mentor, and you can tell from his responses how much of a pro he is.
he's been in the league since the wheel was invented, of course he knows what to say

Right so it makes sense to hire him short term for a rebuilding franchise.
my point was this

Of course he knows what to say in the press conference, they always know what to say in the press conference. Especially someone that has been around as long as Lou. Press conferences are designed to do nothing more than give the organization a chance to put their spin on a move.

Right, but my point is he knows how to do a lot of things like that, like dealing with a future UFA, trying to get a FA and so on. Hes there to help the organization now and mentor the future management. It's a good hire.

Honestly, if Lou is there just to be a leader, mentor and help out with the press and be a "face" of the GM chair then it's a fantastic hire. As long as he isn't actually doing the actual signings and trades, it's a no brainer IMO to hire Lou.
Honestly it's a surprise since I thought he was gonna retire
