I agree with that, but that's not something he won't overcome.

What I'd like to see more from him is initiating a play or a hit that gets him into the game. During his cold stretches he seems too passive when someone his size, speed and hands really shouldn't be that passive.
He never overcame it in the AHL, expecting him to do it in the NHL is just silly. He is what he is and IMO that is a player who plays scared too often.

I like how when you drop another players name, that's all people focus on. I said "if" he becomes an NHL regular. Lucic is what, a 50-60pt top 6 player. If Smith becomes a 25-30pt 3rd liner that has comparable size, am I off base in using the term "a poor mans"? If I am, I apologize.

No, you are fine with your poor man usage.

But your hope on Smith is way off base. But we guess we all do with prospect.

I don't think I am. He's had 1 pro season under his belt, he's going to make the NHL as a bottom 6 player (if that day ever arrives), so he should be developed as a bottom 6 player in Stockton. I think next season though we will see him getting played in more key situations and get more minutes. If he doesn't take a step by next year, then I think you can make a more fair assessment on him but it's way to early to write someone off in his situation.

Smith will never be a big scorer in the pros. He just needs to skate well, be solid in his own end, provide size and toughness and hopefully chip in some occasional offence.

Well that's not so bad. He'd be my choice if we're not top 3. Tkachuk would be my second, Sergachev or Nylander I wouldn't be too disappointed either. Don't think the others are NHL ready.

Hoping Sean Day is still available at one of our seconds. Full grown man who skates very well, think he'd be able to learn a lot pretty quickly from Dougie, TJ, Gio if he were to make the team in a couple seasons. Nathan Bastian is another from Mississauga that would look really good in red.

Yeah it shouldn't matter much. He's already playing in the Q playoffs.

Day is intriguing. He's a guy with all the tools but hasn't seemed to be able to put them all together yet. He's had a pretty rough year mentally (brother was arrested, and sent to jail for 57 months this past summer, and mother who has lupus and has been hospitalized this year) which could really be affecting him.

I'd do 7th overall and a non-Flames 2nd; maybe a C/D prospect as well (someone like Culkin, Sieloff, Arnold, Kanzig, Morrison). I don't think the move up is worth much more than that.

Doubt that attracts much from the Leafs honestly. They don't have any real need for picks this year, and a C prospects isn't something they would likely fawn over. I can't see the value in it for them.

It might just be a deal that doesn't work for either team needs

I just did this. First time I've done it, and I get a result that would make me almost as happy as possible:

I ran that simulator 25 times one day out of sheer boredom. Flames got 1st overall 6 times 2nd overall 6 times and 0 3 3rd overalls.
The next best was Toronto with something like 5-2-4

Id be perfectly fine with those results.

Oil getting 4 would be all kinds of justice; same as Leafs at 5.

I agree id love to see the Devils get Matthews than anyone else. Including us to be honest. Nothing against Matthews, id just prefer one of the Finns.

The Flames will probably draft 6th.

Matthews
Finns
Dubois
Nylander
Tkachuk

Any one of those will help. I am sure somebody is going to draft a dman before us.

If edmonton doesn't get 1OA I think they will definitely draft Chych

I think they a) trade down to 4 or 5 or B) trade it in a package for a stud D.

As for this draft, so pumped. Can't go wrong with any of those guys at the top. hopefully we come away with a starter, a top six wing and a top six pick

Calgary's in the right spot to address a lot of needs. At the draft they'll get a top 6 skill winger most likely.

They might have some cap space to sign a decent winger. And I'm sure BT will be aggressively after a starting goalie.

This is an offseason to kick this thing into hyperdrive.

I think Perron might be a good target. I don't think the ducks will have the cap space to resign him because of having to resign Lindholm and Vatanen. This looks like a good line up. God please let us get Laine

Gaudreau - Monahan - Shinkaruk
Laine - Bennett - Perron
Colborne - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Stajan - Hathaway

Figured boums might be traded for cap space

So far as I know Laine has been playing RW all year

Anyone else starting to warm up to Alex Nylander if we miss out on a Finn? I admit to not having been too impressed by what I've seen of Alex, but Craig Button said that Alex is even better than William, and then William goes and does this Zetterberg-esque move and I dunno, maybe we're selling Alex short. Any real thoughts on him other than "he's not big"?

Do you have a link for where Button said Alex is better than William? Sounds interesting

Skill is skill.
I think Tkachuk and Dubois are higher on the Flames draft list likely; but I have no issues with Nylander. If we end up picking like 6-7th (which is likely) I think he'd be an excellent pick.
