I really don’t want to trade Gurriel. After his oddly poor April last year he played like a 4+ WAR guy the rest of the way, he’s one of the most likeable guys on the team, and he seems like one of the biggest glue guys in the clubhouse.

Dealing Gurriel and then putting Grichuk out there for another year would be really disappointing.

The offensive difference between Ramirez and Biggio would more than offset the downgrade to Grichuk from Gurriel and they could always go out and get another OF during the season.

As for the clubhouse... they'll be fine. I wouldn't let Gurriel be the player who stops a Ramirez deal from happening.

I’d hate this a lot less if they’d do the full international rule of runner on 2nd with 1 out to start the inning. But even then I’d rather they just went with regular extras, no need to mess with it.

I could stomach it if they waited until the 12th and put the runner on 1st instead of 2nd. It would still end games more quickly but you have to usually get a hit or a stolen base to get the guy in from 1st plus we get 2 innings of regular play first.

I actually like this idea .. once you get to 12+ it gets pretty wild.

Jays must soon put a price on cornerstones Guerrero, Bichette | The Star

DUNEDIN, Fla.—The primary focus of the Blue Jays’ front office for the last couple of years has been bringing in players from outside the organization to upgrade the roster.

Soon enough, the attention will have to shift to locking up some of the guys they already have, namely Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. The two stars at the centre of a young core that is expected to be very good, for a very long time.

Neither guy is going to come cheap. Neither figures to offer a major hometown discount, and why should they? They are the faces of a franchise that has finally started acting like a big-market team again after an ambitious rebuild.

Kevin Gausman got a five-year deal as a free agent, George Springer signed for six and José Berríos got seven to avoid testing the market at all. Soon enough the time will come where the organization must ante up to reward the guys who started what could become a golden age for the Jays and their fan base.

Not surprisingly, when the Star asked Guerrero on Thursday about his desire for a long-term deal, it didn’t appear to be top of mind. The 23-year-old is one of the most-laid back players in the game. The Dominican native knows he’s going to get paid one way or the other — either through arbitration and eventually free agency, or by Edward Rogers cutting him a giant cheque a few years early.

Either option seems fine with him.

“I’m going to be honest with you guys, all I know is to hit fastballs and curveballs,” Guerrero said with a smile through an interpreter from just outside the Jays clubhouse. “The rest, I’m just going to leave to my agent.”

One question a lot of Jays fans seem to be asking these days is: Why haven’t these extensions happened already? They look at Fernando Tatis Jr., Ronald Acuña and Wander Franco — similarly talented rising stars, all under club control for at least 10 years — and wonder when the same will happen to Toronto’s young duo.

Guerrero and Bichette each have four years of club control remaining. There’s a sweet spot to negotiations like this, and the Jays appear to be in the middle of it now. Act too early and a team might make a long-term commitment to a player it has not learned enough about. Wait too long and there’s little incentive for the player to avoid free agency.

This off-season would have been the perfect time to get something done, but the lockout got in the way. Jays general manager Ross Atkins scrambled before the December shutdown to recruit Gausman, and Berríos’s contract had to be prioritized because with one year of control remaining it was now or never. Deals for Guerrero and Bichette are crucial, but there were more pressing short-term concerns that had to be taken care of first.

The fact Cleveland wants to compete makes this trade a lot more complicated.

There's a contingent saying "oh just wait it out to the deadline" might be not realizing that a scenario where Cleveland falls out of the race means more teams might start sniffing around and driving his price up. Though it would in theory take the whole roster player thing off the table since they'd be looking towards to future at that point.

If I were in charge I would probably kick tires on Ketel Marte. As aub said in another thread I don't understand how there's no smoke around him. Arizona sucks and don't have any hopes of getting better like Cleveland does, yet not a peep about his future.

He'd check off a lot of the same boxes as Ramirez. Versatile? Check. Plus defender? Check. Pop? Check considering the last time he played a full season he hit 31 bombs and hit 17 in just over half a season last year.

I know people here are debating giving up the farm for Ramirez, but again, why not for Marte? He's locked up for 3 years making peanuts, can play in the infield and outfield, is a switch hitter etc. He's not projected to be as good as Ramirez but he's still a damn good player who's versatile and is probably more available.

I don't think they will be cheap, but I do think Vladdy And/Or Bichette may come in a bit cheaper than expected imo

Not if Gurriel Jr. is a .869-.882 OPS hitter like he was in 2019 and 2020. Biggio could also get back close to .800. But yeah who know's.

So the Carlos Baerga guy is saying the Jays are ones holding up the Jose Ramirez trade because they are hesitant to give up Kirk and would rather give them Danny or Reese

If we are just going to use their best seasons, Grichuk could be close to .800 too and Ramirez is close to 1.000

Ramirez + Grichuk > Biggio + Gurriel and upgrading on Grichuk in the OF is usually easier to do in season than find a MVP level infielder.

lol if thats true it must be kirk in addition to martinez. Otherwise i'd drop kirk off to the airport myself.

I never thought Kirk would be that guy. I know he's a crazy good hitter for his age/position, but what's the likelihood he doesn't end up as a 1B/DH? He's bad at catching.

Especially with Danny mashing after the horrid April, and being the *much* better defender I'm surprised they don't feel comfortable with him/Moreno as the future.

I kinda doubt it's kirk who's the holdup and more if gurriel is included or not but just a guess. Do think it'd be a mistake to move Gurriel as he brings more than just on the field things. Kirk is the 1st piece in the org I'd move, just don't see it with him lasting long

Not sure how much of this is their own feeds but this seems like way more games than most years (get today's game on TV though you cowards).

From looking at TV listings on sportsnet.ca:

Saturday March 19 – 1:00 PM: Toronto at Philadelphia (SNE, SNO, SNP)
Sunday March 20 – 1:00 PM: Pittsburgh at Toronto (SN)
Monday March 21 – 1:00 PM: Toronto at Detroit (SN1)
Tuesday March 22 – 1:00 PM: NY Yankees at Toronto (SN)
Wednesday March 23 – 1:00 PM: Toronto at Philadelphia (SN)
Thursday March 24 – 1:00 PM: Atlanta at Toronto (SN)
Friday March 25 – 1:00 PM: Toronto at Detroit (SN)
Saturday March 26 – 1:00 PM: Toronto at NY Yankees (SN)
Sunday March 27 – 1:00 PM: Philadelphia at Toronto (SN)
Monday March 28 – 1:00 PM Toronto at Atlanta (SN)
Thursday March 31 – 1:00 PM: Detroit at Toronto (SN)
Saturday April 2 – 1:00 PM: Philadelphia at Toronto (SN)
Sunday April 3 – 1:00 PM: NY Yankees at Toronto (SN)
Monday April 4 – 1:00 PM: Toronto at Detroit (SN)

Games not broadcast:

March 18: Toronto at Baltimore
March 30: Toronto at NY Yankees
April 1: Toronto at Pittsburgh
April 5: Baltimore at Toronto

I think spring training broadcasts are produced by the home team. If so, then all Toronto home games will be produced by Sportsnet. The away games would be the other team's broadcast. I am not 100 % sure on that.

The March 30 game against the Yankees (6:35 pm) and the April 1 game against the Pirates are being broadcast by Yes and AT&T Pittsburgh, respectively, so it's possible that they may be available up here in some way.

The April 5 game is a curiosity. It is the only Jays home game not on the broadcast schedule. Perahaps Sportanet has simply not reached April 5 when adding content to the web site (although after March 27, Jays games are the only thing shown in the TV listings). I think it's highly likely that this game ends up being broadcast.

I should note tha the Jays home games are only shown on the visual version of the TV listings and are not shown in the grid version of the listings. Nor have the Rogers Ignite TV listings been updated to include them.

Of course, given that the spring training schedule has been available for less than a week, broadcast schedules are quite likely still a work in progress.

So, it looks like almost every game will be available this year.
Here.s the official announcement of the Jays broadcast schedule including spring:

Of the 4 games listed above as not being broadcast, only the 2 games against Baltimore (first and last games of spring training) are unavailable. The March 30 game against the Yankees and the April 1 game against Pittsburgh will available on SN Now and the Sportsnet.ca site.
