Was listening to NHL radio on sirius last night. West coast bias guy was saying the general consencious was that Gabby was already done for 3 years @5 or 5.5. Supposed to of been done prior or right at beginning of playoffs- If this turns out true WOW. Also said Mitchell was wanting to stay bad, this was the first time in a long time he had a clean bill of health upon his end of year coach meeting, sounds good to me!
That would be fantastic.

That is right in the wheelhouse of what I was thinking Dean would sign him for. I was thinking 2 years before the playoff run but Gabby more than earned the extra year with his amazing playoff performance.

That's really interesting and kinda makes sense. Is that just UFAs, though, or are RFAs included? I'm assuming just UFAs, otherwise that could get really interesting/sketchy...

Yeah, UFA. And it appears I was wrong in that this is actually the second season they've tried this.

There was a short two day window last season and it was something of a disaster since there were some organizations that totally disregarded the rules and turned it into a chance to fully go after players. Other teams followed the letter of the law and was at a disadvantage once July 1st kicked in and contract details were already hammered out between some of the teams and players.

Apparently the intent was to allow players and teams to talk in generalities about interest, but not discuss contract details like term and money, which is not allowed to occur until July 1st.

Lombardi was apparently the GM that contacted the league to get them to send out a reminder and clarification of the guidelines to the other teams to get them to stop cheating and follow the darned rules.

As much as I want to keep Greene and Mitchell, I think it will come down to who wants the least amount of money on a two year contract. RR is done after next year(Hopefully he retires now).

McNabb and Forbort have to come up soon and who knows what Gravel will do.

Next year:

Doughty..............Muzz
Amart.................Greene/Mitchell
RR......................Voynov
McNabb

In two years LA's D could be:

Doughty..............Muzz(if resigns)
Amart(if resigns)...Greene/Mitchell
McNabb...............Voynov
Forbort

Three years:
Doughty..............Muzz
Amart.................Forbort
McNabb...............Voynov
Gravel

Breaking news ... OK, not really. But Kings will NOT be buying out the contract of center Mike Richards, according to Dean Lombardi.

Would have been surprised, actually, it if it had been the other way around. In other words, no compliance buyouts, DL says.

Quick's contract is not bad at all, even if he doesn't return to the elite level of 2012, $6 million is not bad for someone who is going to be a top 10 goalie for a long time.

His cap hit is the same as Corey Crawford's, and Quick is significantly better than Crawford.

I have to imagine the Gaborik deal gets done first, as that will impact what happens on defense.

$13 mil in space, Gaborik, King, Mitchell, Greene needing contracts.

If we assume King gets around Trevor Lewis money, we're left with $11.5 for the other 3. If Gaborik costs $6.5, we're left with $5 meaning one of Mitchell or Greene is out with McNabb taking their spot. If Dean somehow talked Gaborik down to $5-5.5, we could conceivably squeeze both the veterans in for a combined $6-6.5 but one or both would have to take a pay-cut.

Greene may have had a diminished roll here, but I imagine their are plenty of teams that would give him $12-16 million over 4 years. I know he likes it here and all, but that's a tough opportunity to pass up if all he's getting offered here is a $6-7 over 2 years.

Don't see any way that both Greene and Mitchell return unless they don't feel Martinez is worth his next contract and want to cash in on him now rather than lose him for nothing and he is traded this summer. But I find that very unlikely, I have to think they are leaning towards keeping AMart long term.

Or they could trade Voynov, but that was extremely unpopular when suggested on this board.

Don't see the Kings keeping 8 defenseman on the roster though.

I don't think it'll change AMart's status, as neither would be getting more than a 2 year deal here, so either can be easily shipped off with a pick next off season if it has to come to that. Regehr's contract ending will cover for one of Muzzin's raise with hopefully an ELC filling in the roster spot.

But either way, my gut says someone offers Greene a 3.5x4 or 4x4 and he takes it. Det, Tor, Buf, NYI, Edm would all give him more playing time and the latter 3 could definitely benefit from his leadership/locker room presence.

Agreed. I think Greene is gone.

Mitchell is signed for 2 years and McNabb battles Campbell or someone else for the 7th d job

I still don't know about two years with Mitchell. Unless DL has a really solid idea about how his roster is going to fit into under the cap for 2015/2016. But I think it's still going to come down to which of Williams, Stoll, Richards are not on the team beyond this season, if DL knows for example that he isn't going to re-sign Williams and Stoll or that he is for sure trading MR then maybe he is comfortable giving Mitchell two years, but it's very risky because the Kings are going to be very very close to being up against the cap and having a 38 year old d-man with an injury history, who wouldn't be eligible for LTIR is a serious roll of the dice.

As for McNabb, he makes the team regardless. The Kings did not make that trade to lose him on waivers 6 months later.

They could carry 8 d-men. Remember, Lomabrdi and Sutter love competition.

But yeah, you are right

Didn't the Kings start the season with 8 defensemen last year? Then somebody got hurt?

I'd have no problem parting with Greene if it weren't for his play in the playoffs and finding out he had concussion issues. I honestly think he is on the way to rebounding to 2012 form. He missed a lot of hockey between his back and head issues. That is going to take a toll on anyone but especially if you're already lacking in the speed department.

Anyone think next season may be the last for Williams and Stoll? Younger forwards needing playing time, cap space for Toffoli, Pearson, Amart, and Muzzin.

It would be tough for the Kings to depart with Stoll. He's our faceoff beast. Tough to say on Williams. I see no need for him to leave for the time being.
