Hey Jim ... when all said and done, where do u see Austin Martin settling in when he makes it to the show. Middle infield/hot corner/center?
-- @talkinjays

This was a popular topic this week, as I got three separate questions about Martin, the fifth overall pick and best pure hitter in the 2020 Draft. Though the Blue Jays will have him start his pro career at shortstop, he played only sparingly there at Vanderbilt. With average arm strength and concerns about his throwing accuracy, he probably won't wind up on the left side of the infield in Toronto.
If Martin's throwing isn't a problem, he'll wind up at second base. Otherwise, he's a center fielder. He's athletic and quick enough to be a solid defender at either position, and his bat should get him to the big leagues very quickly.

2B is one of the easier positions to fill in the league. If Martin can’t cut it on the left side then I’m trying him in CF over 2B. Heck I would start him in CF over the left side of the infield.

5 teams that could be fine sitting tight
2. Blue Jays
It was awfully exciting last year when the Jays, with all that young hitting talent, went big to bring in Hyun Jin Ryu, and it was even more exciting when it worked. Toss in a Robbie Ray at the Trade Deadline, get improvement from those young stars and next thing you know, you have a playoff team. The Blue Jays haven’t made any major moves like that one this year, and while they’re rumored to be potentially in on some free agents, the major pieces all seem to be in place.

Young flamethrower Nate Pearson could be in the rotation for a full season, which is like an addition of its own, and there are no major holes anywhere. This division is still tough, with the defending American League champs and the Yankees still swinging at each other and the Red Sox not likely to stay dormant for much longer, but the Jays were a good team last year, and if they run it back out there in 2021, they’ll be good again.

Jon Morosi doesn’t think the Blue Jays will land one of this winter’s top free agents
The Jays, their interest in the key players here — the big free agents: [Trevor] Bauer, Liam Hendriks — it’s all sincere and it’s all legitimate. I think the question now is, in the midst of — as we just talked about with the [US-Canada] border and the considerations of the world — how do you get that player to buy in and do you have to overpay to bring him in under the current circumstances?

They’re involved, they’re talking to everybody, but I think it might be more of a Liam Hendriks plus a Taijuan Walker, or maybe they even go the route of a Masahiro Tanaka. But if I had to guess right now I’d say [George] Springer more likely goes to the Mets and [DJ] LeMahieu more likely goes to the Yankees right now. I wish I had better news for Jays fans, but I think right now that’s the way things are looking.

Still fine by me. We have the trade market and I would be ok with lower tier signings like Wong, Walker, Odorizzi etc. - maybe that’s why the Jays are intensifying their pursuit of Sugano. The Jays maybe don’t believe they will land a top free agent so they are looking at other options.

I always saw Martin as a center fielder. His athleticism would be wasted at 2nd base. His arm is average, but so are the arms of guys like Trout and Pillar. I think he'd be an average center fielder defensively, but that may be good enough.

If the 4/56 is a demand rather than a starting point for negotiations, I'm pretty sure he's going to end up back in Japan this season.

Ya if it’s a demand I don’t see it being met. I think the highest would be 4/48. I know it seems like a minor difference but 8 million over 4 makes a big difference. I’m actually optimistic we can get him and I’m never optimistic.

My guess (based on nothing, of course) is that they're more likely to meet him on the annual value while not wanting to add the fourth year (just based on him already being 31).

Damn. If the Jays were getting Lindor, I was hoping to get Carrasco too. Mets getting the package I wanted

Finally we have some action, sucks we wont be getting Lindor or Carassco but so be it. A lot of offseason left.

Do the Mets got as hard after Springer and Bauer now?

I really wanted Lindor. 26 years old and absolutely elite at everything. I’m not sold on Bichette long term at SS unless he gains serious arm strength.

Why not? They have tons of cash.
I know they can afford him. Just don’t see it as a need anymore. I see them now getting Springer and calling it an off season. Degrom, Carrasco, Syndergaard and Stroman is pretty good. I know Syndergaard is out for a bit but should be back to help sooner than later.
