Why does everyone keep writing the obvious. I guess it doesnt take much to be a writer on these sites. This writer is only the 100th one that has written exactly what we already know. We need a CF, SP, BP and INF help. We got it.

Now these people need to start reporting fruitful transactions that fill those needs.

My guess is that there is probably only one of those articles on any given site. I think the typical sports fan never touches a message board like this and looks in regularly on maybe two or three of the bigger sports sites every few days -- so pretty much every site will have an article like to serve the needs of their readers.

And then, you talk about them "reporting fruitful transactions that fill those needs." To me (and maybe I'm wrong), that sounds like you want them to make up trade proposals like you find on these boards. That's the sort of crap that belongs nowhere near a sports new site.

I dont want trade proposals, I want facts of discussions happening. Numbers being traded between teams and free agents. I havent seen anything concrete reported on in some time. Too quiet.

I dont know if this has to do with the pandemic, or if it really has to do with no one offering these FA anything other then the Jays.

Something isnt right. My gut tells me that teams havent been offering free agents anything cause they cannot afford to. And if they are being offered anything they are all low ball offers hoping that they bite. This reminds me alot of what happened when Machado and Harper were free agents. No solid bids until right before spring training. But with this pandemic, those offers may not be around and I am smelling a whole lot of 1 year deals happening to get us past the pandemic.

So why would you complain about the writers? There's nothing to report... what else are they supposed to do?

Im just tired of reading the same shit. Even all the guys I follow on twitter. They have nothing to provide of significance.

Frustration I guess. Sorry. Just venting.

Wasnt Sugano supposed to have a decision by today? Deadline for deal is Thursday but they said decision expected today. Anyone heard anything?

Most teams don't have the money to pay the big salaries these elite FA's are looking for. The Jays do. If they want a payday the Jays should get at least one of them. If they don't and rather play elsewhere for less money there's nothing the Jays can do about that. One would think that if their preferred destination can't pay them what they think they're worth, then the next best option would be to take a shorter deal with a team with money and looks to be on the rise...but what do I know.

Report: Red Sox ‘not expected to pay’ Tomoyuki Sugano what he wants
Passan reported, “The New York Mets are out. Other teams to whom he has been linked, like the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox, are not expected to pay Sugano what he desires.”

Japanese League SP Tomoyuki Sugano's Scouting Report and MLB Comparison
A high spin-rate on his pitches was pointed to as the biggest reason for his success.

"Much of Sugano's success Tuesday could be attributed to the elite spin he generated on his pitches. If you took the average spin rates of Sugano's four-seam fastball and curveball, he would rank among the 2016 MLB leaders in both, according to Statcast," Joe Trezza of MLB.com wrote.

A high-spin fastball appears faster than it actually is, and a high-spin breaking ball is harder to pick up out of a pitcher's hand, meaning both pitches play up beyond what simple velocity and break measurements might suggest.

Sounds like a Jays player.
That pitch mix and some deception in his delivery have helped draw comparisons to a former MLB ace. "He projects as a No. 2 or 3 starter in the majors with an MLB comp of Johnny Cueto, so he should have plenty of suitors if does end up getting posted," Ted Baarda of Sports Info Solutions wrote.

Last offseason, second-tier starters Kyle Gibson (3/$30M), Tanner Roark (2/$24M), Michael Pineda (2/$20M), Rick Porcello (1/$10M), Kevin Gausman (1/$9M) and Julio Teheran (1/$9M) all had similar earning power, and it's fair to classify that group as a notch below the "strong No. 3 starter" type.
By that logic, a $12 million salary over three or four years seems like a reasonable expectation for what it might cost to land Sugano, especially considering he reportedly has a four-year offer on the table from Yomiuri.

A three-year, $36 million deal might be his ceiling in a normal offseason. But in this slow-moving market and on the heels of significant financial losses during the coronavirus pandemic, it may wind up being closer to three years and $30 million.

Final Prediction: Sugano signs a three-year, $30 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.

I thought that was the case as well but I’m wondering if it was today or Thursday

Report: Sugano might not sign with MLB team
Report: Sugano might not sign with MLB team
Jan. 5: Sugano has the arsenal, track record, hardware and skill set to provide quite a boost to an MLB team’s rotation in 2021 and beyond. He could be one of this offseason’s biggest pickups -- that is, if a team actually signs him.

That is not a given. In fact, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Tuesday (subscription required) that, “there is an increasingly realistic possibility” that the right-hander does not agree to a deal with an MLB club prior to Thursday’s 5 p.m. ET deadline. Instead, Sugano could return to his Nippon Professional Baseball team, the Yomiuri Giants, who have offered him a four-year contract with opt-out clauses after each season. While Sugano would be taking a risk that injury or a decline in performance would prevent a future jump to the Majors, he also could benefit from having another strong season in Japan and testing the waters again a year from now.

According to Passan, Sugano is “not budging on his asking price,” so interested teams -- a list that is said to include the Giants, Red Sox, Angels and Blue Jays -- will have to meet those terms to land him for 2021.

Dodgers signed Treinen. Two year deal. Some of the mid tier guys starting to slowly sign.

Honestly if Turner wants 4 years just offer 3 and frontload it, offer more money but less AAV.

I wouldn’t mind Justin Turner at all and he wouldn’t be a Plan B or C for me. I’d gladly take him right now if he wanted 2 years and a team option. Or 3 years depending on the AAV.

-Pretty much averaged 5 fWAR over the last 5 years if your prorate his numbers to 162 games.
-Vet with playoff experience and a WS
-Good at 3B
-very good exit velo, walk rate and power
-perfect stop gap for Groshans or Martin

I was annoyed with Turner's mask act when they won the WS, but if he's willing to sign for 2 years and we can't get one of the tier 1 free agents, he'd be a pretty good consolation prize.

We do not frontload deals. The Blue Jays account for contracts as if they are the same money every year regardless of the cash flow.

So if we signed a young'un to an extension today, we would change this year's value from their current salary to the total obligation to the player divided by the number of years.

I like Turner but man, anything over 2 years would be silly. He's 36 and regressing. And also a clown for pulling that stunt in the world series. Nonetheless, you'd be crazy to give him 3-4 years.

Fine with me. If the risk is worth more than the reward for us I'm happy letting him go back to Japan. It's not like he's a proven commodity, and I'm not overpaying for potentionally Yamaguchi 2.0.

Yamaguchi had some good spurts last season getting accustomed to the North American game and hitters. You would have to think that he will be better this season after some time to adopt to the game here. Im sure they gave him some things to work on this off season and I expect he will be a much better contributor this season.

As for Sugano, he is being tabbed as twice the pitcher Yamaguchi was. In line with a player like Tanaka when he first came over. Has all the accolades Tanaka had when he first came over. I expect him to make a serious impact if and when he signs in the MLB. Time will tell if indeed he does.
