If they don’t, will Shapiro finally fire Atkins and his whole analytics crew? Obviously, to me, they have not been that aggressive this off season is because their analytics tell them that they should expect more production from Vladdy, Kirk, Springer, Varsho. I think they are banking on that. If they don’t make the playoffs, that would be a huge failure on this entire management.

There's a big difference between "not being that aggressive" and not getting the results you want. It sure sounds like they offered around $700 million to Ohtani. I don't doubt that was a business decision at least as much as a baseball decision, but there's no way they would have pushed that hard if they didn't think it addressed a need.

There are also still a lot of options around to improve the offense. I'm sure they do see bouncebacks from those guys you mentioned (most people around the game seem to), but I also suspect they recognize they need to do more. I would be shocked if they haven't added a bat by the time the season starts.

Every time a team extends their star player I feel a little sadder about Bo not having a 10+ year contract.
My first thought as well. Would be nice to have Bo and/or Vladdy locked up for a decade plus by now and know they'll be the face(s) of the franchise right on through their prime and close to the end of their careers.

Britton's a catcher now? That's... odd.

Meanwhile Keith Law has his top 100 prospects out. Tiedmann came in at 52nd. Orelvis is 57th, Nimmala is 59th.

If the Royals can extend someone for that length why have the Jays not? They are gonna walk their core players to free agency and either get bent over a barrel or have to let them walk... bold strategy compared to maybe over paying a guy like Bo, who will sell his contract value in merchandise.
yup I could see the hesitance to give Vlad a long term deal early on with the weight issues but Bichette should've gotten the Witt deal before the 3 year bridge straight to free agency

He was primarily a catcher in 2021 and 2022. He was mostly a DH/OF last year, but he was also hurt most of the season, so I'm not sure how meaningful that is.

He's always been a outfielder/catcher hybrid. Playd one in college and drafted as the other(I can't remember which order). The original, before we traded for Varsho, though I guess he doesn't do both anymore.

I'm sure the invite is a we don't have many catchers in the organization with much upside at the upper levels anymore, and you need lots of catchers for early spring training so invite anyone with a pulse who's done some pro level catching. Though I think Britton has the most upside of the bunch. Clarke and Sosa are more in the anyone with a heartbeat and a catchers glove category.

All I want is for the projections to play out as planned, and for the O’s to fall flat on their face.

I’ll take the Yanks winning the division just as long as we make it in over the Rays/Os.
They're not going anywhere if their pitching staff isn't just as good if not even better than last year..

Have you seen their batting lineup? 5th to 9th specifically? It's arguably one of the worst in the league. As of right now it's projected to be

Varsho
Biggio
Kirk
IKF
Kiermaier.

:oops::oops::oops::oops::oops:

Atkins is Kevin Cheveldayoff confirmed.

And even if he flukes out a great season like the Jets are having this year, he’ll just make the wrong move like Chevy did with Monahan.
I was saying this all of last year.

He's not bad enough where he'll get shit canned but definitely nowhere near good enough to make the team a contender.

Exactly my thoughts as well. I’ve called him the Cheveldayoff of MLB for a while now.

Kirk is projected to be the 2nd best hitting catcher (Jansen tied for 14th), Varsho T-24th for LF (T-12th in CF), Schneider 13th for 2B (Biggio is T-36th).

Based on projections I highly doubt it’s one of the worst in the league.

Not sure why you find that funny..
I don't. It was an incredulous laugh. It's not funny.

I don't give a f*** what Advanced analytics or projections or expected numbers are. I know from the eye test and common knowledge of baseball that a 5 to 9 batting order of those 5 guys is one of. If not THE worst in the league

Go ahead and evaluate every 5 to 9 in the league and get back to us then. I’d love to see your analysis.

I would be willing to bet a lot that you don't know the 5-9 hitters on more than a couple teams in the league.
