How does he? He strikes out more than Chapman, walks less and brings 0 defense whatsoever.
Depends what version you get. The one from last year doesn't help. 2021 version or something close definitely improves this offense.

If you're signing Hernandez it's for DH reasons. Same for Hopkins or whatever bopper they look to add.

If Teoscar had never played for the Blue Jays, I bet no one is advocating for him to come here.

There were thousands of people tracking a flight he wasn't even confirmed to be on and going nuts all over social media. How the hell would he have had any private life in Toronto?
How can he have a private life in LA, where there are probably more paparazzi and beat writers than any where else in the World beside NYC?
Come on, people at his level will not have a private life. He is just not a top baseball player but THE Baseball Player and if he stays healthy, he will probably be the GOAT of baseball.

At the end of the day, if Rogers offer him 700mil and Dodgers can only go to whatever the amount Rogers offered. He will be signing with the Jays.

Would be interesting to see if Ohtani’s camp let Rogers had one final counter to top 700mil or just call it a day with the 700mil offer.

All of that Anaheim to Toronto plane tracking and the tracking of Kikuchi's dinner reservations from yesterday probably gave Ohtani a good laugh. He was probably amused by it all.

Honestly, I really would have been content with Candelario, Lee, and maybe Hoskins/Martinez but at least one of those guys is gone now.

Would love for us to still get Lee and steal Yamamoto out from under the Yankees but I don't think this fan base can take another rejection like that. lol

Everyone's looking for an excuse/someone to blame but let's be real; For Shohei (and the people around him) this is the absolute best, best, best case for him.

He gets to stay in a region he's already very familiar with, playing for a team that for as much as everyone bags on them for coming up short is almost always in the conversation (even last year with Kershaw and a bunch of kids in the rotation at the end) and will make literal gold vaults worth of money to do so.

If people were paying attention after the trade deadline this was the logical endpoint; he wants to win and many people said he wanted to stay on the west coast.

700 million is insane. Judge broke the AL home run record and only got 360 million. He might not even pitch again coming off TJ surgery. You might be paying 70 million a year for a DH.
I think with Ohtani, it is more on the marketing side than on field production. 70mil or 60mil or 65mil…whatever the number, it is good business as long as he hits like past seasons.

Only reason Im interested is because he had a down year and might be interested in a 1 yr show me deal to rebuild his value.

I'm not suggesting signing him long term and I doubt Atkins would.

70 AAV is insane, I'd have done the 50 AAV(12x600) but hey good for Ohtani getting paid. His market appeal will cover some of that but for a almost 30 yr old coming off a major arm injury kinda okay with the Jays not being the ones rolling the dice on that. All in on Yamamoto now and bring back Chapman. See if Naylor is available from Cleveland for a lefty power(ish) bat

Toronto is small market in the eyes of athletes this isn't really surprising.

But what do the Jays do now? Two biggest targets gone and with the likely addition of losing Chapman....this team already wasn't good enough last year time to embrace rebuild?

Yamamoto isn't happening. Yankees have been buttering his biscuit all the way back to the beginning of the NPB season and built a massive foothold in his mind before anyone even lifted a finger.

Jung-Hoo Lee on the other hand i would be very interested in.

I mean while here. There is a difference in getting excited. No tmz like treatment and he would be able to go out properly. Canadians are just more respectful of privacy

Dare I say, if we want to improve we get good players not just players people are familiar with. Teoscar is not a good player, hes a 1 dimensional power hitter with no discipline and that typically doesnt age well.

A lot of things worked for Ohtani.

The money, location, team, and even the Japanese community in Los Angeles is significantly larger than in Toronto. Little Tokyo is right next door to their stadium.

On paper, it always made sense for him to go to the Dodgers but this was a brutal performance by the media. They got schooled every step of the way.

I mean, I really wanted him here, but the 70 mil can go a long way
Very true. But I don't think it is as simple as Rogers alloting the Shohei money ($50 to $70 million) back into the team. I'm not sure they'll be willing to spend that much this off-season otherwise (hope I'm wrong).

The Shohei signing was more a business decision than it would have been a baseball one. Bellinger and whoever else isn't going to bring them anything close to what Ohtani would have.

Probably nibble around the edges, add some pitching depth and trade for an MLB bat that can play in the OF and then just rely on a bounce back year for Vlad. No reason to go blow $200 million on shitty players who will be a weight around our neck as a Tantrum for missing out on Ohtani.
