With all the influx of Japanese players. Really think Jays should start having baseball academies throughout Japan and also start sponsoring local school teams to start building and planting seeds in these players about playing with the Jays.
Just really surprised MLB teams are not doing that. It is a huge business, just look at all the football(Euro Soccer) academies all over Asia. They are planting seeds for fans and future players to play for them in the future.

The last 24 hours have been so embarassing for so many people... The live streams, the plane tracking, the journalists going with it...

The memes will be GOLD.

700 million is insane. Judge broke the AL home run record and only got 360 million. He might not even pitch again coming off TJ surgery. You might be paying 70 million a year for a DH.
Yeah thats what i always though, he doesn't even play a position. I guess he could play 1B at some point if he can't pitch.

the risk was huge, and now i'm glad it's someone else's problem.

Probably nibble around the edges, add some pitching depth and trade for an MLB bat that can play in the OF and then just rely on a bounce back year for Vlad. No reason to go blow $200 million on shitty players who will be a weight around our neck as a Tantrum for missing out on Ohtani.
The Jays got pieces to build upon. Manoah being back to 2022 self is already a bonus.
Not to mention Vlad.
Just need to add two bats and a bullpen arm and they should be good.

I don’t know why people are turn off with Bellinger, as I think he will be good addition to the team.

Only a true idiot would pile on the hate. $700 million and they Jays were in it until the end? Hello!!!

See? Point proven right away...
I never said that I would. I am just saying that a large portion of the fan base will.

Realistically i'm not sure where the Jays go now. Even if they landed Ohtani they have a shitload of holes to fill.

You have to find a regular 2B, outfielder with KK gone, and 3B. Your in house options (Biggio, Espinal) aren't good enough to fill those gaps, you do have some depth in the minor league system with guys like Schneider and Clement they have shown they can contribute in the short term but do you really want to trust those guys full time when this is supposed to be a win now year? Then there's the guys who haven't gotten a crack at the bigs yet in Orelvis Martinez and Addison Barger.

At the same time, the market ain't exactly hot. Bellinger would be a good add but the rest? I don't want Matt Chapman back, i don't really want Gurriel or Teo back. The other big bats on the market are primary DHs in Soler and JD Martinez which does precisely nothing for a team that likes to rotate its DH spot as a pseudo rest day. Jung-Hoo Lee is an interesting piece but while Japan has shaken off the "not able to produce MLB level talent" criticism, Korea has not given it's a much lower level of professional ball.

Going to be an interesting winter/spring to watch.

We already have Cody Bellinger in George Springer, we dont need to add another and pay him $200 million.

Bellinger will be a great add dependant on his contract obviosuly.

Biggio/Schneider platoon will be at 2B

I expect 3B will be filled through trade but I wouldn't hate Justin Turner on a 1 or 2 year deal.

I want Rhys Hoskins for the DH/1B role he can do the OF in a pinch too.

I disagree with the holes the Jays have. If they had added Ohtani, I think they would have been looking for one more reasonably solid player, ideally at 3B or LF. With Ohtani's bat added into the middle of the lineup, you can absolutely afford to let Biggio/Espinal/Clement/Schneider/Barger/Orelvis/etc. fight it out for 2 spots.

Now they need to add two strong pieces to the lineup. It's doable, but the FA options aren't great.

There's a lot of concern regarding Bellinger's advanced metrics;

It's a bit of a conundrum for execs/coaches. Bellinger in his MVP years was absolutely hammering the ball before injuries turned him into a below replacement level player. Him and the Dodgers reportedly didn't see eye to eye on how to fix this so he goes to the Cubs.

He reworked his swing a lot to the point now he's more akin to a pure contact hitter. Doesn't walk a ton but the amount of contact he makes more than makes up for that; this is where the problem lies;

Is Bellinger's resurgence thanks to him evolving his game (because even with his power reduced he still hit 28 home runs largely thanks to being so good at squaring the ball up) or is he just getting lucky given the combination of his BABIP (shown by xwOBA) and hard hit rate is fairly low relative to the rest of his metrics?

I would personally try to sign him but i completely understand why others wouldn't especially given he's now the de-facto best player on the market which means mans is about to get paid.

These are just randoms just like us on the board. End of the day the fans whether they like the team or not are going to still support team and go to games.

He tried for a big fish and unfortunately didn’t land it. Nothing on the board has moved as everyone was waiting for Ohtani so he hasn’t missed out on anyone. I think there will be a few singing s and couple of trades. How the team looks after that time will tell.

Man. Shapiro and Atkins are getting absolutely drilled and defiled on twitter right now.

I don’t think that’s really deserved. Seems like they didn’t even have a shot with Ohtani and were being used by his agent to drive the Dodgers’ price up.

I’m sure they were well aware that they were in an unfavourable matchup, but fan and media perception made it seem like it was a lot closer than it really was. Now that they didn’t get him, we’re all left with this sour taste that no new plan could compete with that acquisition.

And while that may be true, it doesn’t really put us in a worse position moving forward. What would is if our direct competitors keep on improving. For instance, if Yamamoto does go to the Yankees, that will sting even more.

Hyperbole or not, i kindaaaa agree with that tweet?

Pressure was already on from 2023 but if Shatkins were dumb enough (i don't think so but let's spitball here) to put all their eggs in the Ohtani basket, lose then come out and say "idk i got nothing" then there's a good chance they don't make it all the way through the 2024 season with their jobs in tact.

I assume a lot of these people aren't well educated on how baseball works and don't realize the rest of the free agent market essentially just opened an hour ago with the biggest fish off the board.

If they do whiff on everything, feel free to bitch. But there hasn't been enough time for the sky to loosen, let alone fall or so to speak so i will absolutely withhold judgement lol.
