According to Passan Ohtani's CBT likelier per year number will be $40-$50 million per year because of deferrals

Unlikely to happen but this could be interesting. He's considered by some to be better than Yamamoto.

Over 283 2/3 career innings with the Marines, Sasaki has a 2.00 ERA, 34.4% strikeout rate, and 5.12% walk rate, and these video-game numbers are only part of Sasaki’s burgeoning legend. His fastball routinely sits in the upper-90s and has topped out at 102.5mph, and his forkball is arguably an even deadlier pitch. Sasaki’s pitched well for Japan’s gold medal-winning team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and he has two NPB All-Star appearances on his resume.

I'm sad but the team dodged a bullet on this one

Giving an almost 30 year old 700M over 10 years is insanity, pure insanity

$700m is indeed insane, but depending on the terms of the deferral (and apparently it's massively deferred) that $700m may carry a present-value of $500m or so. Maybe even less.

A dollar today is worth a lot more than a dollar 15 years from now. Just look at what a dollar buys today vs what it did a decade ago.

Ohtani’s agent needs to right a playbook as this is how you complete a negotiation. Played it beautifully.

Cone of silence. Never spoke to the media. Never refuted or confirmed any reports. Brought up and leaked legit reasons for liking the Jays: stadium close to the one he played in Japan, Kikuchi, visiting Dunedin, intrigued to play for a whole country. Had everyone thinking he was going to Toronto.

Just remarkable. Expected contract for a healthy Ohtani was $500M. Wanted LA all along and got probably the best program in baseball, big LA market, great for Japan and just got $200M extra to stay where he is while going through Tommy John.

The best program had to pay $200M extra.

So what's plan B? What's the next biggest fish on the market?
Add a primary DH.
Add a SP/deepen pen
Make a trade or two.

Next year's team is mostly going to come down to some young kids playing above expectations and filling holes. It's not ideal but I don't think the free agent market is flush with difference makers.

Because they are stupid. If you or I know that, then why didn't they?

Yeah he made sure there wasn't a cap on ohtani. If leaks had gotten out I bet teams would have a good ballpark of what other teams were offering and once 500 million is thrown out it's hard to drive it up much more.
Dodgers were basically negotiating blind against themselves. I think the Jays probably offered something like 12 years in the 500-600 million range but ohtani always wanted LA. Dodgers probably could've got him for 50-60 million a year had leaks made it out.

There's a lot of concern regarding Bellinger's advanced metrics;

View attachment 780492

It's a bit of a conundrum for execs/coaches. Bellinger in his MVP years was absolutely hammering the ball before injuries turned him into a below replacement level player. Him and the Dodgers reportedly didn't see eye to eye on how to fix this so he goes to the Cubs.

He reworked his swing a lot to the point now he's more akin to a pure contact hitter. Doesn't walk a ton but the amount of contact he makes more than makes up for that; this is where the problem lies;

Is Bellinger's resurgence thanks to him evolving his game (because even with his power reduced he still hit 28 home runs largely thanks to being so good at squaring the ball up) or is he just getting lucky given the combination of his BABIP (shown by xwOBA) and hard hit rate is fairly low relative to the rest of his metrics?

I would personally try to sign him but i completely understand why others wouldn't especially given he's now the de-facto best player on the market which means mans is about to get paid.
Thanks for nice detailed reply.

To me, I think the current Jays just need hitters to get on base, esp against good pitching. At least last year, it shows that they can smash okay and bad pitchers but whenever a pitcher is feeling it, they tend to struggle to even get a hit.
Bellinger can hit and I really would not worry about power too much as long as he can get on base.
I think at the end it all depends on the price for Bellinger. As I don’t think Bellinger is someone that can push the Jays over the top even if he rediscovers his power.

It really feels like a large contingent of sports fans at this point are fans just to be angry all the time.

A very real attempt was made to sign a top-tier free agent and they were blown out of the water by a $700 million offer by arguably the top franchise in the league. That's no reason for shame for the front office or to be mad as a fan. Toronto has signed a string of top free agents with Ryu, Springer, Guasman, and Bassit, so it's not like top free agents don't want to come here.

Improvements definitely need to be made to the roster, but with Ohtani signed and Soto traded things should start moving.

Let’s face it, if Ohtani signed with the Jays at 700mil/10yrs. I don’t think anyone of us here will be saying it is bad deal….we might say it is a huge risk but who cares, we got Ohtani.
Even if the Jays got Ohtani, we still need to sign a few more players and hope the guys that had a down year play like their former self in order to have a shot at winning the WS.

Its human nature, why be content over something you have no control over when you can be a miserable prick nobody wants to be around 24/7? Its obviously better to whine and be unbearable all the time. (its not even a Toronto thing, its an everywhere thing)
