So… this team is going to expand their payroll by 70mil this season and beyond now?
Why would they?

First of all, we don't know tha the Jays were going to go as high as $700M over 10 years.

Most of the $700M in the Dodgers deal won't be paid to Ohtani until after the 10 year deal has run its course. Since the deferral was apparently Ohtani's idea, it is probably safe to assume that a Jays deal would be structured similarly and thus, the actual hit to their payroll would have been far less than $70M.

Finally, the return on investment for Ohtani is much higher. Spending $700M on Ohtani would bring n much more money for the Jays and Rogers than spending ppl that same amount on other players.

I find this hilarious. Not because what was said is wrong. But Westhead is an investigative reporter who now decides the time is ripe to chime in on the whole Ohtani thing.

What an ambulance chaser he is.

And I say that as someone who generally respects and appreciates his work.

Westhead simply retweeted Bob Nightengale's tweet that linked to Nightengale's article in USA Today and added a quote from said article.

It sounds like Ohtani will be getting deferred payments and for some reason even asked for it. One thing to consider in all of this is that a lot of business executives and economists think there will be high amounts of inflation over the next decade and 70 million by the end of this deal could be the equivalent of like 40-45 m in real terms. Still a lot of money... but more reasonable if that plays out.

I think he asked for deferred so dodgers can spend more now too.

Also speculation that a big thing was the farm system. Dodgers ranked top 5. Jays bottom 5. Back half of that 10 years those or people traded for them are his teammates.

Sorry i should have said he'll play the advanced stats game again.
Ya might wanna learn that LA and TB are perennial contenders because of that.

At least up your BS game

Lol. I have honestly never heard of them.

The only CAA I ever heard of was the towing and roadside assistance company. LMFAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why am I not surprised you never heard of the world's biggest talent agency?

It's just a continuation of patterns.

LA now doing NYY a solid for staying out of the Ohtani sweeps.

"Here are 2 players who can play immediately off our 40 man....for nothing!"

I was thinking the Yankees helping the Dodgers too. Thanks for keeping Ohtani from the Jays and our division.

Best case for both juggernauts. Yankees didn’t bid against the Dodgers for Ohtani and the Dodgers didn’t do the same for Soto. They both got the 1-2 stars of the off-season in a span of a few days.

Dodgers get Soto out of their division away from the Padres. Yankees happy the Jays didn’t get Ohtani.

Win-win-win-win

The both have a drink at the Jays expense.

I never even heard the name Ohtani until this week. Obviously I’m not even a casual baseball fan, although I watch the jays games here and there and flow them a bit. The media coverage reached out to even folks like me who live under a rock. Lol.

There are reports that Ohtani’s AAV over the 10 years is $45M.

The remaining $250M is spread out over 20 years in deferrals. $12.5M a year for 2

Lessens the Dodgers tax hit and gives them more money to spend with Ohtani.

In 10 years the Luxury tax pay roll is going to be at least $300M. In 10 years after that it could be $400M.

First 10 years of deferrals will probably take up at most 4% of their payroll or as little as 3%. Likely to be less as the Dodgers probably spend well past the first LT threshold.

The final 10 years it will be at most 3%. Likely to be less as the Dodgers probably spend well past the first LT threshold.

Dodgers made out like bandits.

Any interest in Devers? Don't really know what direction Boston is going in after trading Verdugo, and Devers is young enough for their next competitive window while signed for 10 more years at 30 million. But if they would move him he's 3-4WAR elite lefty bat who can play 3B, and is also friends with Vladdy.

They fired Bloom because he was too conservative/spending too much time rebuilding.

They're going to make a big free agent signing or two.

Not concerned about the Dodgers one iota. I am only concerned about Atkins building a team that can beat Baltimore and TB to finish 1st in the AL East. Now Boston and NYY will be right there too. It's ridiculous. This division is f***ed up.

Feels gross for the Jays. Two legacy franchises colluding and slapping around a star chasing imposter from Canada, ending up with the two biggest names on the market, while Toronto pats itself on the back for being in the game with the big dogs.

Bobby Bonilla quietly raises a glass to this bit of business.

Speculation and rumors that Bellinger is seeking 250M. I'm assuming that's over 10 years. Vomit. The max I would go is 175M over 7.
