Yup. He clearly played us and cost the Jays opportunites. That’s probably what Ohtani should do to maximize profits, I would do the same. But at the same time I have zero issues with the Jays plunking him for it.
The Jays did not lose any opportunities. They made an offer for Soto, so it’s not like they had tunnel vision. An organization can be active on multiple fronts at the same time

It is kind of fun to imagine the whole management team just sitting around for the last month complaining that they're bored and there's nothing to do.

I think a lot of people are. Slimy business all around, but I guess you can’t blame them. I kind of hope he sucks moving forward
I don't give a crap if he sucks or not. He's not playing for the Jays and he's not even playing in the American league. I'll care if he sucks only if the Jays plays in the world series against LA. I'm more interested in what Atkins will do. I think he'll play money ball again.

Moneyball again? WTF are you even talking about? This team has spent money, this is not the Cleveland Guardians.

I think what happened was. Ohtani wanted to go to the Dodgers but had an open mind to go elsewhere, they met and the Dodgers made their offer. The Jays brought him to Dunedin and made an even larger offer than the Dodgers, and Ohtani was probably legitimately interested in coming here. The Dodgers likely would not budge on their initial offer probably not believing anyone would top it.

Fast forward to Friday, CAA decided to leaked the flight to Toronto using one of their other clients (who conveniently said nothing the whole flight and had a post ready to go to refute it once they landed) to spook the Dodgers into believing they weren't bluffing and really had the offer from the Jays and in the drama the Dodgers blinked and upped their offer to $700 million to clinch the deal but would have taken our offer by the end of the weekend if the Dodgers cave in.

I actually think Toronto was never in the cards. The flimsy reasoning behind the Jays being such strong option, including training facilities in Dunedin (how many months of the season is that even relevant?) always seemed a bit hard to believe from a casual fans perspective. Not to mention the massive lifestyle change from relocating across the continent.

Ohtani camp also managed not to play any of the other major American markets... so if a star chasing fanbase in Canada is offended, so be it. Not like he offended San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Boston or anywhere else.

The LA Dodgers would always have the final say.

Who’s CAA?

It’s the system they agreed to play under.

I'm just glad we don’t have deal with the craziness during spring training and I won’t feel too bad if ticket brokers are stuck with a bunch of tickets.

Now that's funny.

It's baseball.
It's money.
It's entertainment.

It isn't the future of the planet and mankind (environment).
It isn't the future of democracy.
They aren't war correspondents losing their life chasing life and death stories.

...

Now, who are the best free agents still available Rogers can throw their money at.

Feels like the Jays went for a prestige move at a level they don't usually operate in.

I wouldn't put too fine a point on it, but not getting your guy in such a high profile pursuit, with such a circus around it... I wouldn't say is a positive experience.

Not to say it detracts them from their other baseball opportunities. It's like the Minnesota Wild trying to make a pitch for Connor McDavid. You just proved to everyone you're the Minnesota Wild.

For me, Morosi, Nightengale, Hoornstra and all the radio people brought more baseball related excitement in 48 hours on the internet than Ohtani has brought me in half a dozen years on the field for the Angels and probably will for the next 10 years with the LA Dodgers.

So like you said, it's sports journalism and entertainment, probably something like The Bachelor for guys with a bit of espionage intrigue mixed in. No one takes you guys as serious journalists anyway, don't worry.

Silly people pretending to be serious people.

I think everyone knew it was the Dodgers all along, but at least by getting involved they may have cost LA about an extra $150 million or so. Now the real test, make this team better

They are kidding themselves if they think they are going to go for truth over entertainment. Baseless click bait is way more profitable.

It’s just made worse when they want to think you’re more serious than they are.

From a more hardcore baseball fan perspective, I can tell you that things like player development, spring training facilities, etc. are frequently cited by players as major selling points when they sign.

It's silly to think Toronto was never a real option. They've signed several high-profile stars in the last few years - there's no reason to think Ohtani wouldn't have seriously considered signing here just because he's a better player than the other stars they've attracted.
