We don't have the budget for a 20M 3B. Even without IKF, we were likely short financially.

One thing that should be different this year is that hitting should be a requirement to play. If Schneider, Varsho and Orelvis hit well enough to play more, then one of Babe/Orelvis is going to play 3B.

The biggest thing is that we need to get back to development, so that the next wave is internal and the Jays don't have to find free agents for every position.
The Jays should just YOLO it and play Turner every day at 3B. Or at least 60+ % of the time.

Turner at 3B and Horwitz/2nd catcher at DH is just so much better then Turner at DH and IKF at third.

The 2nd catcher could have a .100 point higher OPS then IKF. So getting both bats (or Horwitz) in the lineup as much as possible should be a priority imo.

Lineup
  1. Springer
  2. Turner
  3. Bichette
  4. Vlad Jr.
  5. Kirk
  6. Jansen
  7. Varsho
  8. Schneider
  9. Biggio/KK

That’s jaw dropping bad for a team supposed to be in their window.

There’s no way we get the same quality of pitching we had last season, and we managed to be worse than last season in the batting order.

This is a gut punch.

What if Springer bounces back, Kirk bounces back, Vlad bounces back, Jansen has a huge season in a contract year, and Schneider becomes the next Brandon Lowe? If just some of these things play out they could be top 10 in offence, and I think they will be a top 5 defensive team.

I like the positive thinking but I’m going to have to point out that those if’s are just that…
Considering where we are in our window to compete, to roll out a roster like this with a lot of prayers behind it is not where we hoped we would be in the prime seasons of our new superstars careers.

I’m hoping you are right though, it would be great to have everything turn out ok.

The offseason has been disappointing though. I wanted J.D Martinez and one 3B/LF that could play in the middle of the line up and that is not IKF or Kiermaier.

But the reality is, outside of Ohtani and Soto, I havent seen any elite middle of the order bats involved in any deal.

Bellinger and J.D Martinez were the dream additions for me, but it just wasn't in the cards.

There hasn't been a single player moved that I thought, wow the Jays should have been in on that. I'm interested to see what J.D or Bellinger get though.

So basically a very impressive 4 months followed by 2 putrid months. On this team he was productive. Gotta remember the bats were shit
Man, you really did just skip right to batting average, incorrectly use it to assume he was actually good (or not just good but "very impressive") and then blame his failings aside from August/September on everyone else.

That's... that's great.

Merrifield's issues were basically everything outside of his pure batting average. He doesn't walk enough to buffer for his average dipping, so he's kind of slower Ben Revere in that if he's not hitting a boatload of singles his offensive value is far below what it should be for the average he produces. His power all but vanished outside of July so he lost not just HRs but also extra base juice. He's not fast enough nor does he get on base enough to be a reliable and actually threatening stolen base weapon. And even for a guy who generally posts a higher-than-normal BABIP he had some funky high BABIP #s in several months that don't bode well for him finding additional offensive value elsewhere if those numbers normalize.

He had one great month, one OK month and was otherwise a mediocre or worse blippy singles hitter who doesn't have enough of a glove to offset the fact that most of the time he's just not worthy of extended playing time. Kiner-Falefa might suck with the bat but at least you're getting a guy who is a competent or better defender at more than 1 or 2 positions.

I've not really been on the Bellinger train becuase I'm not convinced his 2023 is repeatable. He was great last year, but that comes after like 300+ games of being an absolute tire fire since his MVP level 2019. You're banking a multi-year contract on him not having just had a significant dead cat bounce.

I would've much rather had JD Martinez to Justin Turner but I don't know what the deciding factor was for the Jays. Was it that Martinez wanted more money? Was it that Turner can at least pretend to be an acceptable fielder while Martinez should probably not have a glove in his hand except in cases of emergency and even then is strictly an "outfielder" in the loosest possible sense of the term? Is it that the team valued Turner's personality/leadership/whatever? My outsider view wants me to suggest that Turner over Martinez is a mistake but we won't know for sure without the full facts set (which we'll likely never get) and until we see how they both perform this season.

Let's hope the off season commitment to fitness translates into better results on the field for Vladdy and Manoah. They have both proven to be potential MVP candidates in the past, so their return to form would be massive for the Jays.

Most likely he’s pitching out of the pen in Buffalo. Likely to be called up at some point when we encounter injuries.

I still think he can be a productive late inning reliever, but he needs to harness his control.
Still has options? If so….crazy….feels like it’s been do or die for years.
Electric arm still. Fingers crossed. Give up the ‘starting’ dream.

That seems like a reasonable avv, guess Toronto didn't want to give term.

The Giants officially announced Soler’s deal this afternoon. The slugger will received a $9MM signing bonus in addition to $7MM in salary for the 2024 season and $13MM salaries for each of the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

I checked a few players a couple of days ago and the only one who doesn't have options of note is White.
Why hasn't Shatkins cut this putz yet? I mean, for the love of all that is holy, the guy might be the worst pitcher in the whole system, and yet he's still on the 40 man roster? Does he have film of the two of them gettin' jiggy with a duck...or at a Trump rally or something? Jebuz...let's just cut our losses and move on.

I posted a thread a few pages back on the potential of White. He significantly improved with his stint in Buffalo.

If he has a good spring he likely makes the team as a long man.

Has he added movement to his FB?
