Gretzky...? He had 1963 assists, which is 57% more assists than the #2 of all-time guy.

Who knows? But the odds would seem to be very high.

Gretzky assisted on:
-- Kevin Lowe's first goal (the Oilers' first NHL goal)
-- Blair McDonald's first
-- Risto Siltanen's first
-- Glenn Anderson's first
-- Raimo Summanen's first
-- Steve Smith's first
-- Sylvain Couturier's first
-- Rob Blake's first
-- Brent Thompson's first (his only NHL goal)
-- Vitali Yachmenev's first
-- Christian Dube's first

There must be others....
My hunch was that it would be a long-tenured "bad team" scorer with lots of roster turnover (was thinking a Ray Whitney type) and that playing with Gretzky would be something that vets earned the privledge of, rarity for rookies etc.

But as pnep shows, should never bet against Gretz.

Palffy's starting all "first goal assisted on" lineup is pretty solid. Whole lotta grit!

Bertuzzi - Crosby - Brown
Visnovsky - Chara

Career non-Power Play Goals rank - PLAYER (overall goals rank / PP goals rank):
1. 690 - Gretzky (1 / 17)
2. 590 - Howe (3 / 15)
3. 549 - Jagr (4 / 11)
4. 523 - Ovechkin (2 / 1)
5. 515 - Messier (9 / 29)
6. 497 - Dionne (6 / 9)
7. 491 - Gartner (8 / 12)
8. 490 - Yzerman (10 / 18)
9. 476 - Brett Hull (5 / 3)
10. 471 - P. Esposito (7 / 6)
11. 456 - Bobby Hull (18 / 47)
12. 454 - M. Lemieux (11 / 8)
13. 446 - Kurri (20 / 45)

Bobby Hull, Kurri, Messier and Gretzky are all notably low in PP-goals ranking vs. their non-PP goals rankings. Howe, too. The rest aren't too surprising. I did not realize Mike Gartner had 24 career short-handed goals!

EDIT -- I forgot to mention that (as many will know) Dave Andreychuk is 2nd in PP goals, and 15th in overall goals.

1986-87 to 1990-91 (five seasons) Non-Power Play Goals
1. 195 - Yzerman
2. 186 - Gretzky (2 seasons Edmonton, 3 Los Angeles)
3. 181 - M. Lemieux
4. 165 - Robitaille
5. 154 - Brett Hull (1 season Calgary, 3 St. Louis -- only 4 seasons active)
6. 150 - Lafontaine
7. 142 - Neely
8. 140 - Gartner (3 seasons Washington, 1 Minnesota, 1 NYR)
9. 137 - Nicholls (3.5 seasons Los Angeles, 1.5 NYR)
10. 136 - Ciccarelli (3 seasons Minnesota, 2 Washington)
11. 135 - J. Mullen (4 seasons Calgary, 1 Pittsburgh)
12. 132 - Kurri (only 4 seasons active)

Now, I take those 12 top non-PP goal scorers and re-rank them by non-PP goals / game:

1. 0.60 - M. Lemieux
2. 0.51 - Yzerman
3. 0.50 - Brett Hull
4. 0.50 - Gretzky
5. 0.42 - Robitaille
6. 0.42 - Kurri
7. 0.39 - Neely
8. 0.39 - Lafontaine
9. 0.38 - Ciccarelli
10. 0.37 - Nicholls
11. 0.37 - J. Mullen
12. 0.36 - Gartner

There were few players who played for Devils, Islanders and Rangers but I don't recall anyone who played only for those three.

I think Pat Conacher was the first to do that.

Wow, he did. Had no idea. Only 13 games for the Isles at the end, but it counts.

Pat Conacher is the co-subject of my favorite NHL stat, ever: In 1983-84, he appeared in 45 games for Edmonton and scored 10 points. Goalie Grant Fuhr also appeared in 45 games... and scored 14 points.

Current Edmonton Oilers are impressively moving up the franchise all-time lists:

Games Played (RS)

Nuge, this season, passed Kurri, Buchberger, and Horcoff on the games played list, to move into the top-5 Oilers' all time.

Goals (RS)

Draisaitl and McDavid, in the past month or so, both passed Ryan Smyth and moved into 5th and 6th place all time, respectively. (McDavid is already 5th in ES goals.)

Assists (RS)

Nuge remains in 9th place (until next season, I guess), but Draisaitl passed Doug Weight this year for 7th, and McDavid passed Glenn Anderson to move into 4th all time.

Points

Amazingly, before this season McDavid was in the '600's' in points, and now he's just 50 points short of 900! He's got 5th place, and if healthy next season will surpass Anderson and move into 4th. Meanwhile, Draisaitl passed Ryan Smyth and Paul Coffey to grab 6th place. Nuge passed Doug Weight to push into the top-10, at 9th place.

Connor McDavid is also sitting at 2nd all time for the Oilers in assists per-game and points per-game. (He's currently 4th in goals per-game, behind Wayne, Jari, and... Jimmy Carson.)

Toronto's Mitch Marner was +9 in the first round. His teammate Justin Holl was -7. Has there ever been a playoff series where the the gap in plus/minus (between the best and worst player on a team) was greater than +16?
Great question. I think big discrepancies like that were more common in the 70s and 80s.

I love how, in the 1983 Calgary-Edmonton series, Flames' Paul Reinhart scored 6 goals in five games and somehow went -14. (However, the best Flame was only -1, so that's "only" a thirteen-ES goals' differential.)

The -16 is matched by some Boston Bruins in the wild 1983 Boston-Buffalo second-round series. Brad Park went +14 while Bruce Crowder and Luc Dufour went -2 each.

Not a singular fact, but I noticed a peculiarity regarding Lidstrom. I was looking up where Barrie ranked over the last 10 years in D scoring (7th by the way). For reference I went back another 10 and then another 10 to see how the lists compared and I noticed how similar Lidstrom's stats were in those snapshots. So I looked up his career and cut it in half (easy as it's 20 seasons).

First 10 seasons ('91-'92 through '00-'01):
775 GP - 136 Goals - 431 Assists - 567 Points - 0.73 PPG - +205

Second 10 seasons ('01-'02 through '11-'12, no season in '04-'05):
789 GP - 128 Goals - 447 Assists - 575 Points - 0.73 PPG - +245

I'm scared to actually go game by game... to get an even split LOL

I shouldn't have... Taking the first 7 games from the '01-02 season and moving it to the top half...

782 GP - 136 Goals - 435 Assists - 571 Points - 0.73 PPG - +209
782 GP - 128 Goals - 443 Assists - 571 Points - 0.73 PPG - +241

What the actual f***?

NOTES:
-- Of franchises that have existed for 30+ years, Colorado / New Jersey is the only one to NEVER have a single 50-goal scorer. In fact, in 47 years, the Rockies / Devils franchise has had zero 50-goal scorers; while in fewer years the Oilers franchise has had 19.
-- Montréal and Washington have each had 5 player-seasons where the player hit exactly 50 goals (Maurice Richard being the first of all 50-goal scorers, of course).
-- Chicago and Quebec/Colorado are the only franchises to have had six or more 50+ goal scorers but never a 60+ goal scorer.
-- Montréal's first and last 50-goal scorers are 45 years apart.
-- Mike Bossy accounts for 75% of the NY Islanders' 50-goal seasons.
-- Alex Ovechkin accounts for 60% of the Capitals' 50-goal seasons.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have somehow not been swept in a playoff series since 1981 against the Islanders. Impossible right? But how? I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that either every other team since then or darn near close has been swept at some point. This is the definition of an obscure stat because they've had lousy teams and a lack of playoff success. But somehow no sweeps against them.

Was curious so took a look, and aside from Vegas and Seattle, New Jersey is the only team never to have been swept. For posterity I put the list of everyone's last sweep below:

Anaheim - 2018 (Sharks)
Arizona - 2011 (Red Wings)
Boston - 1993 (Sabres)
Buffalo - 1993 (Canadiens)
Calgary - 2017 (Ducks)
Carolina - 2019 (Bruins)
Chicago - 2017 (Predators)
Colorado - 2008 (Red Wings)
Columbus - 2009 (Red Wings)
Dallas - 2001 (Blues)
Detroit - 2003 (Ducks)
Edmonton - 2022 (Avalanche)
Florida - 2022 (Tampa)
Los Angeles - 2018 (Golden Knights)
Minnesota - 2015 (Blackhawks)
Montreal - 2009 (Bruins)
Nashville - 2022 (Avalanche)
New Jersey - Never been swept
Islanders - 2019 (Hurricanes)
Rangers - 2020 (Hurricanes; in the play-in); otherwise, 2006 (Devils)
Ottawa - 2008 (Penguins)
Philadelphia - 2011 (Bruins)
Pittsburgh - 2019 (Islanders)
San Jose - 2010 (Blackhawks)
St. Louis - 2021 (Avalanche)
Seattle - Never been swept
