Yep very late in the year on Long Island. A game that they were outshot 45-18 and trailed 3-2 heading into the 3rd.

Somehow they also beat Quebec that year 6-4, and of course that 2-1 win vs an apathetic Pens team

These were the Toronto Maple Leafs' NHL finishes in team defence (21-team League) from 1979-80 through 1990-91 (twelve years):

Of all Maple Leafs' goalies who played 30+ games, the best stats were by Jiri Crha (who?) with an .883 and 3.98 GAA. That was the best result in 12 years! The worst stats were by Rick St. Croix with an .857 and a 4.70 GAA.

During these 12 years, the Leafs were the NHL's worst defensive team, with a 4.39 GAA in sum. During the 12 year span, they surrendered 1,219 more goals against (i.e., 100+ per season) than Montreal did.

Sounds good. With most of these early-80s' guys, even if they were before my time, I at least recognize their names or know something. But I'd never this guy's name until today.

Detroit tried to bring Gordie Howe back in 1977 after his contract with the WHA Houston Aeros ended, going so far as to acquire the NHL rights for Marty Howe from Montreal, but having lost money the previous season due to poor attendance, was not willing to pay the asking price to obtain the NHL rights for Mark Howe from the Bruins, so Gordie and sons signed with New England/Hartford.

Whaler ownership signed the Howe trio to improve the team's chances of being part of any NHL merger in the future.

It never happened and can't now but theoretically a player could have played for the California Golden Seals early in his career, played for the Kings, and late in his career play for the Sharks and Ducks.

That's two different states, though, and two different licence plates.

Not if he doesn't move states. New Jersey is easily close enough that a player could live in New York while playing for the Devils, could even do the more impressive achievements of playing for 3 different teams in his career while living at the same address.

I looked at rosters and it seems like nobody managed to stick around from the Kansas City Scouts' final season in 75-76 through the Devils' first season in 82-83. There are a handful of guys who played for the Seals, Barons, and North Stars in order, though the merger isn't quite the same as flat out moving twice.

I did find that Mike Kitchen was technically drafted by the Kansas City Scouts in 1976 before their move to Colorado became official, then he played for the Rockies during their entire existence and then the Devils for two years.

It never happened and can't now but theoretically a player could have played for the California Golden Seals early in his career, played for the Kings, and late in his career play for the Sharks and Ducks.

Dave Taylor stuck around til the 15th round of the 1975 draft (210th). If the Golden Seals grabbed him, he probably would have started his career a year or two earlier as their lineup would have been easier to crack.

He played til 93-94, long enough to be nabbed by the Sharks and the Ducks in expansion drafts.

Obviously this is all blasphemous to even hypothesize as Taylor is a legend in LA and played his whole 17-year career there. But he's one of the only guys whose careers stretch across that timeline.

Gretzky...? He had 1963 assists, which is 57% more assists than the #2 of all-time guy.

Who knows? But the odds would seem to be very high.
