mediocre prospects arent gonna bring back shattenkirk.
roman polak and nick spaling brought back TWO 2nd rd picks last year.
1st and your teams best prospect is probably the ask

Makes more sense to let him walk to UFA

Teams usually get desperate the closer they get to the trade deadline. This can go either way. Either STL wants to get at least something, and they settle for a 2nd + prospect, or a bidding war will start and they will end up getting a huge hail

When? Was it vs NJ?

During your games vs the Devils and the Islanders.

Drury and Clark went to both games, and our head of pro-scouting (Maxwell) went to the Devils game.

It's odd to see an Asst. GM and Dir. of Player Personnel to be out doing regular scouting trips. Especially two games in a row.

I believe Murray/Ducks personnel was seen at MSG for either the Sharks or Red Wings game (don't remember which)

And now that Lebrun is saying things...

...when there is smoke...

For those who talk about the expansion draft, what do you think about protecting only 8 players?
McDonagh, Girardi, Staal, acquired top4 D, Zibanejad, Stepan, Zuccarello, Kreider?
Assuming we trade Miller for the Dman. We would leave Nash, Hayes and Klein as our best unprotected players, but we will keep two of them.

Also there's the option to convince Girardi to waive his NMC, or to buy him out.

We have to make this trade, we could go for another run if we improve the D a bit, 100% sure.

I just assume its Vatanen that they are targeting. The big wigs have been watching a lot of Ducks games...Would be a little weird timing since Vatanen signed a new contract with Ducks sorta recently... but I guess that doesn't really mean anything

I would love Vatanen with all of NYR's impressive youth for many years

If St. Louis doesn't get any huge offers for Shattenkirk, Rangers could easily offer up a mediocre bundle of prospects and picks and a warm body and end up walking away with him.

Or simply wait until the offseason and sign him without giving up anyone or any picks .

That is never a guarantee and to be honest, with how hard Gorton is pushing to acquire a defenseman, it is starting to become one of the least likely scenarios. With all the buzz around Anaheim and Winnipeg, I doubt Gorton does nothing and waits to sign Shatty. Another team could trade for him and offer him big $$$. Then what do we do?

The Rangers have wanted Vatanen for a while. It's no secret.

The Rangers have liked Silfverberg for years as well.

The Rangers liked Brassard for a while, traded for him.

The Rangers liked Zibanejad for a while, traded for him.

Just saying

We seem to be doing ok without his services , why give up our youth .

I am not advocating to trade youth for Shattenkirk. I am saying that it is unlikely that we sign him as a UFA considering how hard Gorton has been working to acquire a top 4 defenseman. I don't believe they want to wait until the off season to get him because he could have already been traded and signed somewhere else. Then what do we do?

If we do trade for Shatty, I don't believe Gorton is going to give up too youth.. Apparently, that is all Armstrong wants so it is unlikely that a deal happens. With other targets out there, younger and cheaper $$$ wise, I don't see Shattenkirk coming to NY unless Armstrong completely caves on his price (unlikely).

JT Miller is not skating with the team today. Beat writers are looking for info. Not sure if this means anything or not.

lol maintenance day but he is the likely guy to go for a Dman. I'd just wait for Shattenkik, yes over pay but no assets lost next year

And then what do you do when a team trades for him at the deadline and throws big money at him and Shatty decides to re-sign?

What is your plan?

I have heard this for years from Rangers fans. "Oh, well just sign Kovalchuk as a UFA". "Oh, well just wait and sign Stamkos as a UFA instead of trading for him."

You have guys like Trouba, Vatanen, etc. available now. They will cost assets but they are younger than Shattenkirk and will have a cheaper cap hit. If we pass up an opportunity to get those players just to wait for Shattenkirk as a UFA (that may never happen), it would just about be the worst thing we could do.

Shattenkirk signing here as an FA is the least likely scenario in terms of us upgrading our defense. Gorton wants to do it now. I don't blame him.

I don't disagree, but there's been a lot of whispers about Shatty wanting to come here in FA and there was never anything like that with Kovy or Stamkos.

I'd say make a trade for a Vatanen or Trouba if possible, and sign Shattenkirk in UFA if possible. Gotta dump G somehow but there's a lineup that can compete for a long, long time.

I am all for that. I don't mind adding one of Vatanen/ Trouba + signing Shattenkirk. Nash would have to be moved and Girardi bought out but it would be doable.

There was absolutely something like that with Kovalchuk
