This deal only sucks if we make the ecf and don't win the cup. Other than that if Cally resigns it's essentially Cally and a 1st for MSL

I was at the Dallas v Tampa Bay Game last week. MSL had 2 goals and after the game he didn't even celebrate with the team on the ice. Just went straight to the locker room. I've watched him a few times this year. He hasn't slowed down at all and with his conditioning and stamina I think he'll be playing as long as Jagr has and still be producing the same. He busts his ass on every shift and he definitely adds that premier scorer we've been missing. He's a play maker and a sniper. We are now the fastest team in the league. We should trade Boyle and keep Carbomb and Dorsett on that bottom line with Moore. This move makes us instantly better.

The more I think about this trade, the more I'm disappointed.

1) It rubs me wrong that a deal couldn't be made with the team's captain. I don't love the message that sends to the team and some of the younger players. I know it takes two get a deal done but the players will stand by their guy. It just looks bad to me.

2) I don't love dealing the pick(s). They were basically bidding against themselves.

3) This just reeks of the latest "one player away" move.

4) I have an inherent skepticism about bringing in the older, marquee player. These moves have really never worked for this franchise.

1) Lundqvist, McD, Girardi. Earn the check and you get a check.

2) They were also bidding against the trade deadline and TB who could have just kept him until his contract is up or traded him next year when the NMC is up.

3) But is this one of the players who truly does help push the team closer? Was this better than keeping late picks in early rounds which won't pay off until likely 2016 or 2017 (or ever) and letting Cally walk for nothing?

4) No arguing with that. MSL could fall off a cliff completely next year. if that happens it's a real bad trade (barring a cup win)

What a kick in the d!ck to wake up to.

I get not paying Cally the money
I get that MSL is a phenominal player. (today)

I do not get that we had two choices besides paying him what he wanted.

1) trade Cally for picks, prospects, maybe young roster player. Restock the cupboard after loosing a player we developed the past 8 years.

2) trade Cally for MSL, make a cup run this year, hope MSL doesn't fall off a cliff next year.

What do we do?

Give up the cupboard stocking we should have got'in from some team out there, get a player in return who may/may not live out the rest of his short contract, and GIVE UP PICKS IN A DRAFT THAT IS TWO YEARS AWAY AND HAS MCDAVID AND JACK ********* EICHEL !!!!!

For Christ sakes! A forst in 2014 would be hard enough to swallow but it has the makings of a late first in a so-so draft. What part of giving up a pick in 2015 makes sense?

Again. I get grabbing MSL for Cally. But, to morgage the future at the same time that we could have gained assets for the future is insane. IN-SANE !

God forbid Hank gets hurt next year and MSL goes MS Lafleur and NYR goes weeeeeeee.....BA-DoInK ! right into the basement & lottery without a pick. Don't laugh, Don't shrug. You know it can happen with this teams luck/history.

NJD fans would have a field day as that would litterly jump the Kovalchuk shark.

I'm done.

Oh....and no follow up deal as of 2:47pm??? In for penny in for pound if we are going whole hog.

Double WTF?

In what world were we going to land any of those guys with our pick in '15?

Look at the trades over the past 48 hours. Who is the most high profile prospect to move around? Jacob Markstrom? Teams will trade you picks, but no one is moving prospects. No one is moving good, young players. Gaborik gets Matt Frattin and picks. What's a UFA-to-be Callahan going to get you? In this market, maybe a second and c-level prospect, at most.

Exactly what I'm saying. If we're going to get a 2nd round pick and a low level prospect, I'd take MSL all day long. By the time that 2nd round pick develops (if he does), Lundqvist would be 36, and past his prime.

Sather got himself in this mess of making the team a must win now team, and worry about the future later. Due to this, the MSL trade was necessary. It's either that or our chance will slip away as Lundqvist and Nash both age. We are not built like Chicago or LA or St. Louis where they have elite youth. We don't have a Toews or Kane. We don't have a dynasty here. What we have is a 5 year window at most to win a Cup. That's it.

So it's either we watch the team be mediocre for the next 10 years until Hank's retirement with multiple 1st round and 2nd round exits, or we try real hard to win in the next 5 years when Lundqvist and Nash are still good. Unless we can magically acquire some of this elite youth, we are a win now team. It's just how the team is made up.

All valid points. It does send a message to the young players but that MIGHT not be a bad thing. Maybe it forces a young player that is has a high self worth to take the Rangers seriously when the Rangers say this is it, take it or leave it. I don't know, maybe that's wishful thinking. Maybe, the players see the obvious upgrade from Callahan to St. Louis and are excited. Maybe, they think St. Louis will help their numbers.

We also don't know if the players were frustrated by the distraction of being asked about it all the time. I'm not saying that's the case but it's not an out of left field thought.

I don't love moving the picks either but draft picks aren't sure things.

I hated the posters that felt the need to **** on Callahan. **** on his whole legacy. We have a board vet write "CYA" in the Ryan Callahan tribute thread. St. Louis for the next two years and perhaps beyond at $5.6M is still a better bargain than Callahan at $6.25M. The production should be higher.

This trade is a risk. It is MORE of the same but St. Louis isn't signing here as free agent. He is having an awesome season already. He hopefully isn't coming here to float and retire but I don't think that's the case. Really, who knows....

I loved Ryan Callahan. I love the way he plays. He gave it all every shift. As long as he doesn't end up an Islander, Devil, Flyer, or Penguin I'll root for him the rest of his career.

i like those odds.

i think were a better team today and tomorrow with msl. we still need better centerman but i like us with msl in place of cally.

i kinda feel bad for cally in a way. he over played his hand and his agent rolled the die and lost.

no way tampa overpays him and thats assuming he stays healthy the next few months. this negotiation could be very difficult come july.

the odds he ends up in buffalo to me are pretty good.

cally will hate himself if he passed up 6/6 to stay in ny and ends up in buf rotting on the vine.

I think people are still somehow not realizing how good St. Louis currently is.

He has 61 points in 62 games so far this season. That's good for 8th in the entire league. And this came without Steven Stamkos for 45 of those 62 games.

Oh, and he's also incredibly cheap. $5.625M cap hit. Of those current top 8 scorers, he's the 2nd cheapest behind Tavares who is on a RFA deal ($5.5M).

Don't care if he's 38. He's still producing at 38. And we don't have him on a long-term deal. If he stinks, we can cut ties after next year. If he's productive, we resign him for a likely 2 year retirement deal for cheap.

Exactly. He'll be good for 65+ points the next 3 years in my opinion.

you will have lots of friends in the "doesn't get it" club meetings.

yeah, OK. WHY WOULD TB EVER DO THAT STRAIGHT UP? I'M LOSING MY MIND AND MAY NOW HAVE POLIO WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN ERADICATED.

a lot of you people don't seem to grasp the concept of "giving up assets to give up assets" and that the sum of both sides should kinda be as close to equal as possible, ideally, for both sides.

CALLY FOR MSL STRAIGHT UP ISN'T EVEN CLOSE TO BEING EQUAL!!!

A few thoughts,

1) In the real world, what happens when you tell your boss you think youre worth X but he does not agree? a) you get fired or b) he doesn't pay you and you end up leaving to find someone who will give you a deal you think is fair. Sports is not dissimilar except that sometimes a team can manage its assets to upgrade. Now I get that giving up 1sts is not a smart move, but only in hindsight will we know how good the 2015 draft will be, and two every team knew we were more likely than not resign callahan. If you did no deal you ran the risk of losing him and getting nothing back. You at least got St. Louis who is a proven player with experience and diversifies our attack and can play pk and pp time. no drop off.

2) Future> Jt Miller and Jesper Fast both can produce intangibles and offense to replace Callahan at a cheaper cost. $ saved also gives NYR ability to resign more of core and augment with future acquisitions if needed.

3) Prospects. Miller, Fast, Lindberg, Kristo near term. Bucenivich, Duclair are longterm highend probables. If 2-3 work out, you need space in your lineup to fit them. All 6 present skillsets that if matured and ready replace or enhance what the current forward lineup has or lacks. And well be doing it at a cheaper cost.

4) Self evaluation: Outside of our seeding when we went to ECF, NYR have never been better than a 6-8 seed playoff team. We are marginal because we have too many 3/4th line guys. Longterm we have to cycle out of some of them to balance/enhance our lineup and allocate $ more effectively to younger players deserving or new players. 3/4liners should be young capable prospects or cheap vets.

5) This helps with Chris Kreider, Hagelin, Staal, Stepan processes in the future.

6) Upside- if Richards bought out; maybe you have a lot of money for a young fwd signing or a defensemen with PP acumen

His contract is up in like 18 months.

At which point we re-sign him for a relatively risk-less 2 year deal for cheap.

He wants to retire here. He's made that quite obvious. And given Jagr's contracts lately, I doubt he'll be very expensive.

We'll get 3 to 4 years out of MSL, IMO. And he'll likely be getting 50+ points even in that last year. He's in insane shape. Better than Jagr.

Any updates on St. Louis being available for tonight's game or not? Last time I heard, NYR sent out a jet to pick him up, but haven't heard anything since.

They sent the jet for him to play immediately. As long as he's up for it, he's gonna play.

That seems to be the sentiment from the few guys on Twitter I've seen mention it.
