Except, he'll probably be at center.

I hope, anyways

He could play either. Look Cally was my favorite Ranger hands down, and this stings a bit. But right now we are a much improved team. Those picks might hurt us down the road, or maybe a kid like Miller or Buchnevich comes in and goes lights out. Im not as doom and gloom as the rest, but MSL will make his years here exciting, and i can subscribe to that.

That's right. Hemsky brought back a 3rd and 5th. Ruutu got a 3rd and crap. Gaborik netted a 2nd, 3rd and crap. Who are these great young assets that we were set to acquire? Which teams were ready to give us a first round pick or young roster players for a 2nd/3rd line grinder that's about to hit UFA status?

What on earth do people think Callahan was capable of returning?

In a normal year, maybe a lot. TSN referred to this as a sellers market, but 6 or 7 wingers on the market drives everyone's price down.

What a kick in the d!ck to wake up to.

I get not paying Cally the money
I get that MSL is a phenominal player. (today)

I do not get that we had two choices besides paying him what he wanted.

1) trade Cally for picks, prospects, maybe young roster player. Restock the cupboard after loosing a player we developed the past 8 years.

2) trade Cally for MSL, make a cup run this year, hope MSL doesn't fall off a cliff next year.

What do we do?

Give up the cupboard stocking we should have got'in from some team out there, get a player in return who may/may not live out the rest of his short contract, and GIVE UP PICKS IN A DRAFT THAT IS TWO YEARS AWAY AND HAS MCDAVID AND JACK ********* EICHEL !!!!!

For Christ sakes! A forst in 2014 would be hard enough to swallow but it has the makings of a late first in a so-so draft. What part of giving up a pick in 2015 makes sense?

Again. I get grabbing MSL for Cally. But, to morgage the future at the same time that we could have gained assets for the future is insane. IN-SANE !

God forbid Hank gets hurt next year and MSL goes MS Lafleur and NYR goes weeeeeeee.....BA-DoInK ! right into the basement & lottery without a pick. Don't laugh, Don't shrug. You know it can happen with this teams luck/history.

NJD fans would have a field day as that would litterly jump the Kovalchuk shark.

I'm done.

Oh....and no follow up deal as of 2:47pm??? In for penny in for pound if we are going whole hog.

Double WTF?

I have to give Cally's agent a lot of credit. How he convinced Sather to offer 6x6 is amazing. I am just in total shock that he didn't accept it. I just don't see a lot of teams giving Cally that kind of money. What team in today's NHL is winning cups with players like Callahan making 6m a year? Cally will have a decision to either play in the train wreck that is Buffallo or play with a real team at a reasonable price. This summer he will make a decision for dollars or a chance to win a cup.

Though small, I think there is a chance that Callahan could resign with the Rangers if he isn't bitter. I don't think he is going to be too excited with the teams lining up to meet his demands. Everyone has a right to do whatever they feel is best for them and their family. But if I were an NHL player and had the ability to retire making 50+ million over the length of my career, then I would have no issue sacrificing say... 7 million of that to have a chance to win a cup. It just doesn't appear he is one of those people. I am happy he is leaving the Rangers while I still love the guy. If he stayed at 6x6, I know I would end up loathing him.

It's hard to tell. Sounds like Callahan is surprised that he got traded. Might not have been what he wanted. It's hard to say whether his agent did right or wrong here. We'll see once Callahan resigns somewhere. I've been saying from the very start that he's pricing himself off of all good teams. TB is not going not go 6x6 with him.

I made that stand out for all you people that said we had to keep Cally. I love him as a player, but he did this to himself. On TSN he sounded like he already regretted not taking the deal. I almost wonder if his agent was blowing smoke up his butt, because I don't see any other COMPETITIVE teams giving him more then 6x6. Enjoy being on a rebuild Ryan, we still love you, but your decision making was lacking.

I mean, and if Sather really wanted him to stay he could have made it happen, but with Callahan and his agents comments it sounds like they thought Sather would budge for sure and were waiting him out. And, well, sometimes you get bit in the ass when that happens.

The more I think about this trade, the more I'm disappointed.

1) It rubs me wrong that a deal couldn't be made with the team's captain. I don't love the message that sends to the team and some of the younger players. I know it takes two get a deal done but the players will stand by their guy. It just looks bad to me.

2) I don't love dealing the pick(s). They were basically bidding against themselves.

3) This just reeks of the latest "one player away" move.

4) I have an inherent skepticism about bringing in the older, marquee player. These moves have really never worked for this franchise.

Exactly.

I understand the disappointment with giving up the draft picks. That I get. I don't agree with it completely, but I understand the philosophy behind not wanting to give up those picks.

What I don't get is the "We should only trade Callahan for young assets" argument. What young assets? Again, look at the deals that have been made. Who were we going to get these young players from? Where are these deals happening?

Well yeah the difference could have been bridged with one conversation weeks ago...if one side completely caved.

Sather set a line in the sand, Callahan set a line the sand, and neither side wanted to cross theirs. If Callahan really wanted to stay he could have not played chicken with Sather on a new contract

... Exactly, and not waited until deadline day to make sure that it got done... They played hardball with Sather up until the last moment, and now they are in Florida.

Correct on all counts, Singin. This is a well-trodden path that Jackass took again. One that has never paid off for him.

This is my only concern about the deal. Based on history, it wouldn't surprise me if MSL never scores another goal.

Maybe Callahan's value to other teams was real low. No idea what other offers were on the team for him.

Talks about sending the wrong message i.e. Cally's proposed deal? I bet there were quite a few upcoming FA's in the locker room, closely monitoring this soap opera and wondering just how much they could skin NYR for. Imagine if Cally was given his "home team discount" at $6.5 mil/6y? He was 3rd liner this year. A 3rd liner. Hank got soooooo much crap for his new deal, and he's without question top 3 in the league and has been for quite some time, but Cally who's a heart on his sleeve-guy which I love deserves 6/6 (or 6.25) despite being a 3rd liner? Just no.

If anything, this sends the right message: NYR will deal you if you try to hold us ransom to more than you're reasonably worth. If BUF wants to give Cally 7 +, that's on them. Good on Sather for standing firm.

And I'll miss Cally dearly, but as a captain. Not a hockey player. He's just not worth anything close that money to me. He was basically a freebie tossed in the deal which just stresses even further how little he would've brought in another trade. Judging by quotes from his interview he isn't resigning with TB, which makes our deal for MSL even more understandable. 2 high draft picks for last year's point leader. LAST year as a 37 y.o.

Sather had two options on this, because clearly he wasn't resigning Callahan nor letting him play the season out as a UFA (thank god!):

Trade Callahan straight up for essentially lesser assets (STL floated Stewart, LAK probably was willing to give up the same for him as they got Gaborik for).

OR

Add and get a better player in return (the result here).

I understand the desire to continue to have your own picks and add more, but the market never evolved for Callahan where the Rangers were going to get significant pieces back (not that surprising).

Considering this team right now (Lundqivst/Nash in their prime, good younger core, 4-5 guys at cusp of stepping in next year or two), I'd rather than MSL than 2 2nds in the next two years of the draft.

Sather has always shown that he will give out fair deals and reward players who do well for the team. He just gave Girardi a new large contract, he rewarded McDonagh, Hank got a huge contract...I don't think this sends a bad message at all. Guys can look at Girardi or McDonagh if they want an example of "play hard and get rewarded"

“@NYP_Brooksie: Rangers have sent JT Miller to AHL Wolf Pack, not clear if it's a paper move or whether he will indeed play in Hartford...”

Maybe Callahan's value to other teams was real low. No idea what other offers were on the team for him.

Look at the trades over the past 48 hours. Who is the most high profile prospect to move around? Jacob Markstrom? Teams will trade you picks, but no one is moving prospects. No one is moving good, young players. Gaborik gets Matt Frattin and picks. What's a UFA-to-be Callahan going to get you? In this market, maybe a second and C-level prospect, at most.

So don't do the deal. Period.

Was this team a MSL away from being Cup contenders? Was this team a "one player away" team?

wrong. then what ? we end up agreeing to an awful deal for an already unproductive marginally healthy player trending down ? ya no.

you do the deal because you get a premier player. a difference maker and a goal scorer who instantly makes us a better team and addresses our biggest need. we added a top line scorer.

you add his left hand snipe on the right side on the pp and we add a weapon we did not have prior.

we added him and avoided the deathgrip contract that cally was expecting from us. that alone gives us life as much as or more than still having those draft pics. we escaped the potential cap killing deal cally wanted.

no one is saying we are one msl away from a cup, but we are infinitely better today than we were yesterday and we didnt give away a mcdonagh, kreider or stepan. we added msl to those guys.

hes a gamer. hes a sniper and he WANTED to come here. lets not undersell his numbers. hes our top scorer right now. we needed scoring. we got it.

i agree were not a one player away team, but we got a guy who can make us more competitive and certainly potentially makes our top 6 more dangerous.

the more i understand this deal the more i like it
