Worth noting that Boyle was gotten by us with a 3rd. Poo was free and Brass was free (trade for a former FA). J Moore too. mcD too

I know how we got them, but they were mostly all drafted in the 1st round. St. Louis...Anaheim, them going all in, I understand, but us? Our prospect pool is weak and we potentially won't have a ******* 1st rounder until 2016. That's what, 3/4 years with no 1st rounder? LOL.

If Callahan really wanted to stay he could have not played chicken with Sather on a new contract

I made that stand out for all you people that said we had to keep Cally. I love him as a player, but he did this to himself. On TSN he sounded like he already regretted not taking the deal. I almost wonder if his agent was blowing smoke up his butt, because I don't see any other COMPETITIVE teams giving him more then 6x6. Enjoy being on a rebuild Ryan, we still love you, but your decision making was lacking.

This is why "experts" can't be taken seriously. Darren Pang just said in discussing this trade "NY Rangers are a team that gives up a lot of goals". I guess he saw the last 2 games or something. Before that they were lights out. Including the awful start this year, they're 11th in a tie for 10th actually. The **** is he talking about?

At the end of the day,Callahan only has the man in the mirror to blame for this.

Sucks he is gone, but Sather wasnt letting him walk for free.

MSL for 2-3 years will be worth more then Cally at 6x6 anyway.

What I mean by this is we trade Callahan for younger assets. I do not think we are an MSL away from the cup. It is not a huge win for us. Letting Cally go for nothing is better than trading him + picks for yet another short sighted miracle run.

That's fine, but one problem with this is that there are just too many options out there this year. In another year you might get a first and a quality prospect. This year you have Vanek, Moulson, Gaborik, Cammalleri... There's a good chance that your futures would have been a late 2nd and a late 3rd.

For everyone complaining about the draft picks. Here is a list of all the Rangers first round draft picks since 1989.

Year Name Games Played (Season/POs)
1989 Steve Rice 329/2
1990 Michael Stewart 0/0
1991 Alexei Kovalev 1316/123
1992 Peter Ferraro 92/2
1993 Niklas Sundstrom 750/59
1994 Dan Cloutier 351/25
1996 Jeff Brown 0/0
1997 Stefan Cherneski 0/0
1998 Manny Malhotra 914/35
1999 Pavel Brendl 78/2
1999 Jamie Lundmark 295/6
2001 Dan Blackburn 63/0
2003 Hugh Jessiman 2/0
2004 Al Montoya 81/0
2004 Lauri Korpikoski 382/30
2005 Marc Staal 440/43
2006 Bob Sanguinetti 5/0
2007 Alexei Cherepanov 0/0
2008 Michael Del Zotto 303/32
2009 Chris Kreider 78/26
2010 Dylan McIlrath 2/0
2011 J.T. Miller 54/0
2012 Brady Skjei 0/0

1.) Of those 22 picks, 7 of them did not play a single regular season game with the Rangers (not including Brady Skjei)

2.) I would say only 2 performed/are performing at a level that is anywhere near how high they were drafted: Alexei Kovalev and Marc Staal. (Chris Kreider in time will probably be in that category, but it's still early in his career).

3.) So 2 picks since 1989 have not turned out to be complete busts (I understand we still need time to evaluate the class of 2009 and beyond) for the Rangers and people are complaining about the picks in the St. Louis trade? This fantasy world in which the Rangers draft well doesn't exist.

Yeah, but it looks like the last 6 first round picks were all hits (I'm including Cherepanov, and assuming he would have been successful if it weren't for his untimely passing).

We have gotten to the point where we can expect our first round picks to be solid 2nd or third forwards or 2nd or third pairing defensemen at least.

He did get financially selfish.

Especially hurts because he was our captain and Girardi just settled on his resigning with relative ease. Shows who's heart is really in the big apple.

That said, St. Louis is an absolute stud.

Stamkos must be pretty pissed he just lost his set up man.

If the cap next year is 71 mil, that's an average of 3.5 mil per player. Obviously you have some younguns' making minimal money to balance out the Nash/Richards/Lundqvist, etc., but is Callahan worth almost twice the average for a guy on the third line likely to be going downhill in 2-3 years. I get that he's really worked incredibly hard to get where he is, given his natural ability, and love his enthusiasm. Also get that this is likely his one shot at a big payday and it's a bidness. Also get that MSL is 38. But if he is SO desirous of being a Ranger, he can get Sather's offer of 6x6 over the summer, and then for next year we'll have both at the cost of 2 draft picks, neither of which is likely to be a franchise player.

The Islanders have been getting top picks, much better than what the Rangers have, for years now, and they still suck. Get on Sather all you want (and there is plenty reason to), but it could be worse, we could have the Islander top brass team.

So besides shanahan, A bunch of grinders and 4th liners
The Grind line was considered among the best 3rd lines in the NHL and an integral reason for Detroit winning.
Thats what we need! more grinders!
A few would be nice, yes.
If anything blame chumps like boyle that are as tall as skyscrapers but don't know how to use it.
How about we blame this on those that are not willing to battle in corners.
This team wins puck battles along the boards just fine with speed and effort.
Apparently you are watching a different Rangers team. Tell me, how did they look winning battles this past weekend?

No way. Crazy talk. We have no future.

Ahh right, the doom and gloom, my bad.

In all seriousness though I really think miller can be as effective as Cally and in some ways more so. Plus he's more versatile because he can play at center too. YOu get a shot at MSL you dont turn it down, period. Those low first round picks could be great, could be good, or could be ****. You know what you have in MSL, and gave up no youth to get him.

Two years ago we were talking about how Miller was going to replace Dubi. He's going to have an awful tough job of replacing both Dubi and Callly now

That's fine, but one problem with this is that there are just too many options out there this year. In another year you might get a first and a quality prospect. This year you have Vanek, Moulson, Gaborik, Cammalleri... There's a good chance that your futures would have been a late 2nd and a late 3rd.

That's right. Hemsky brought back a 3rd and 5th. Ruutu got a 3rd and crap. Gaborik netted a 2nd, 3rd and crap. Who are these great young assets that we were set to acquire? Which teams were ready to give us a first round pick or young roster players for a 2nd/3rd line grinder that's about to hit UFA status?

What on earth do people think Callahan was capable of returning?

I have to give Cally's agent a lot of credit. How he convinced Sather to offer 6x6 is amazing. I am just in total shock that he didn't accept it. I just don't see a lot of teams giving Cally that kind of money. What team in today's NHL is winning cups with players like Callahan making 6m a year? Cally will have a decision to either play in the train wreck that is Buffallo or play with a real team at a reasonable price. This summer he will make a decision for dollars or a chance to win a cup.

Though small, I think there is a chance that Callahan could resign with the Rangers if he isn't bitter. I don't think he is going to be too excited with the teams lining up to meet his demands. Everyone has a right to do whatever they feel is best for them and their family. But if I were an NHL player and had the ability to retire making 50+ million over the length of my career, then I would have no issue sacrificing say... 7 million of that to have a chance to win a cup. It just doesn't appear he is one of those people. I am happy he is leaving the Rangers while I still love the guy. If he stayed at 6x6, I know I would end up loathing him.
