I think this is to see if one of the kids can step up a 2C. Might as well figure out that sooner than later, and if not we already have some space for the TDL

Flexibility is always a good thing, you never know what kind of situation could open up as the year goes on
I wonder how ADA feels about this happening.......conveniently, NOW? Had this happened prior to the season......he would have been like "hey, we have cap flexibility", so give it to me!

You see where I am going with this? Pretty deft move, if indeed this was planned......and it sure seems that way.

Yeah okay Ottawa......we will do this trade, but we have to make it look good, so Tony doesnt get pissed OR, try and dictate to US.

Names is an okay player. He was okay offensively. He was okay defensively with an okay forechecking game and an okay physical game. He was an okay penalty killer but not someone you really wanted to see out on the power play. He skated well but more or less the average for an NHL player. Nothing particularly about him ever stood out but he was never terrible. He should have been making $2--2.5 mil a year.
That’s really the only issue I see... that we gave he and Spooner new contracts that looked bad less than a year in. Yes they were for 2 years but we all said it was too much $ and it didn’t take long to be proven correct and, in this instance, for it to become an issue with the cap.

Its another loss for Gorton... he’s still WAYYYYYY ahead mind u but those two contracts do give me pause.

Namestikov in my mind hasn't had a good start to the season and is not going to be here next year so they opened up some salary space and more importantly and opportunity for one of the kids or a player with some more grit which Quinn is clamoring for.

You’re not going to find a GM who doesn’t have moments like those in his tenure.

How much cap space does this give them and what can they realistically use it for? I give Namestnikov **** but the roster is now worse than it was an hour ago.
Maybe that is actually the point? Maybe deep down theyre thinking.....oh shit, we are 2-0. We dont necessarily wanna be a possible PO/bubble team. Lmao.

a 1st rounder 2011 (really, they must have planned that to later draft Kucherov, but like, why.. ), if a 4th rounder is the only thing get, couldnt anyone give more? Feels like many teams could have use for him. Highly odd

Don’t understand the hate with this trade. Vlad couldn’t put it together here. He was an ok player. He did hustle and he played a decent 2 way game but he wasn’t gonna be back next year and it frees up cap space. Did I really see someone on here say this is one of the worst trades in the Rangers’ history? Or have I had a few too many to drink? Good God, overreaction much?

Completely understand... but Spooner is done... turned him into Strome... ok fine. It’s just that we NEVER seem to have a clue when giving out contracts. Names and Smith also. I won’t lump Staal in because of diff circumstances and Sather was in then... but we just can’t seem to get it right. Skjei may prove that again (I REALLY hope not).

Those Spooner and Vlad extensions were horrendous.
I say, it served a purpose. Who were we supposed to ice "instead" of them? The team was up theperverbial creek with no paddle. You cannot ice an AHL team for those prices. Thats like telling your fans F....U......they have to give them "something" somewhat reputable to look at.....in the meantime.
Then again.....what do I know?

I'm guessing other teams didn't want to trade for depth players at all during the offseason when plenty of depth guys were still available just to be signed. This also allows us flexibility to either make a trade and bring someone in, or more likely pay performance bonuses.

Bonus Rollover
Performance bonuses count against the salary cap as soon as they are earned. If there’s cap space to absorb them, great, we never need speak of it again unless you’re a luxury car salesperson, and you have the player’s phone number.
If the end of year cap space isn’t enough to absorb the bonuses actually earned, then the excess is rolled into the next year and counts against the salary cap, eating into the space just like retained salary or an overpaid player in the press box does.

I doubt we want bonus rollover cap hits (Kakko, Kravstov, Fox, Hajek) next year when we have that huge 1 year spike in buyout cap hits.

this trade is all about cap space...cleared space to give us the flexibility to run the team that we didn't have before...they tried to move him all summer teams probably wanted us to retain 50%. when ottawa only asked for 750k to be retained we jumped at it is my guess...the return wasn't important.

I doubt anyone gets called up, we play 1 game in the next 10 days...and mckegg needs to get a game. then they can figure it out...

ADA is probably pissed this trade didn't happen a week ago...

Is it worth my time figuring out who Nick Ebert is?

Edit: that sounded more obnoxious than I intended

He was once considered a "can't miss" prospect in his class and he ended up being literally the last person taken in the 2012 draft. He actually ended up having a pretty good year in Sweden last year but he's likely not going to carve out a NHL career in any meaningful capacity.
