I really don't need to hear from his agent.

The player had plenty of opportunities last season

That pisses me off.

He played well more often than not last year. Not up to his contract, but he was a much better player than Spooner.

It's got to be a hard couple years from him. Get traded from a team with legitimate cup aspiration, where he was playing a big role and putting up points, to a team in the beginning of a rebuild. Then he spends all of this past offseason expecting to be traded. Hopefully he gets more minutes with Ottawa and can set himself up for free agency.

Ottawa was the team that i thought made the most sense to deal Namestnikov to all offseason. I just thought they would get a 3rd round pick for him.

Oh well. Nothing to sweat over. I mean im a bit surprised they decided to move him now and not wait until later in the season or trade deadline. I dont think Ottawa gets more for him if they flip him at the deadline.

This opens up a lane for the return of either kravtsov or chytil, or a waiver claim. Creates some more flexibility with the cap.

At least I no longer have to read "Names," the second dumbest nickname on this forum behind "LA"

Wait..But we got rid of NAMES.
By trading NAMES, do we now have an additional $4M in cap space for this NAMES trade??
IDK who Nick Ebert is and if he goes to Hartford since we traded him for NAMES but that's a great move since NAMES didn't do a single thing since he's been here but good luck to NAMES in the future.
Haha :thumbu:

He's a better Strome!

I'll say this, his percieved value is higher than Strome. Teams look at him and see an experienced center with tons of playoff games and success (w/o a cup) on his resume.

If the move is to sign him, we'll get more out of him than either Strome or Namestnikov just based on the value of a potential February trade.

I like McKegg more and if this means Lemieux or even Lias gets more ice time then this is a win. Plus now Chytil or Krav can take his spot.

Names is an okay player. He was okay offensively. He was okay defensively with an okay forechecking game and an okay physical game. He was an okay penalty killer but not someone you really wanted to see out on the power play. He skated well but more or less the average for an NHL player. Nothing particularly about him ever stood out but he was never terrible. He should have been making $2--2.5 mil a year.

Yeah, and... we sent a bottom 6 player the other way in exchange for a mid round pick plus $3.25MM in cap space. Meanwhile, we have another bottom 6 player (McKegg) not currently playing, and two prospects who profile as top-6 guys (Kravtsov, Chytil) currently in the AHL awaiting a call-up. :dunno:

If one of those guys is called up, fine. It doesn't sound like they want to play them bottom 6 though.

McKegg should be playing already. Smith as a forward is f***ing dumb.

He could've set himself up by having a better season last year so he'd actually have a little trade value to us.

Couldn't care less about how he sets himself up for free agency now.

This. And I remember some people were concerned that we might have to add a draft pick to move Namestnikov. Seems fine to me, and I think I’m a bigger fan of Namestnikov than most of this board. Oh well, good luck in Ottawa.

Plus he never established a role for himself here. He was always just kind of here.

Whatever.

A carrot for Chytil, Kravtsov, and Lemieux, if nothing else.

And honestly, even though I view Lias as a long term centre, if he can get more minutes at the start of the season as a top9 wing instead of a 4C, I'd be fine with it.

Yep! they get a third rounder from a competitor and that third rounder becomes just as good as the pick we just got for him.

They had an opportunity to get a bit of cap flexibility and took it.
I mean, thats all I could really come up with. He actually looked like one of our best forwards not named in lines 1 and 2.
He has been motivated since his benching last year. Really would have liked him having a chance with "talented players", now that we have some. I mean, he did well with previous talent with Tampa.
What did he do to deserve Ottawa? I guess, it was ALL business and NO LOVE. I suppose that is the way it is supposed to be, as the Rangers have been "guilty" of that love thing for many years.
I got to liking him, and feel he really wasnt given a "real" chance again........with better linemates. Oh well.
He really was a hard worker......just didnt put up points.

I don't understand people complaining about the Shattenkirk buyout in relationship to this trade. The two are not connected. We could have afforded Shatty with Names but look at our roster. We don't have room for Shatty with Trouba, ADA, and Fox. Smith is doing his thing. I feel like no matter what we want, we just can't get rid of Smith or Staal so losing either is not realistic.

Names was a decent player that just cost too much and provided too little. I wish him luck in Ottawa. I wish we got Duclair back instead of Ebert ;) but whatevs. I'm guessing Chytil and Kravtsov stay down until they show marked improvements. As Quinn said, neither will come up to play 8 min a night (RIP Lias TOI) so this is about getting McKegg and Haley playing time as much as it is about freeing up cap space which I think is a great organizational move.
