Anytime you can trade an overpriced player because of a lack in production is a good thing; especially when you are in the rebuild business to begin with. Our main priority is to teach and have the young players mature in experience instead of carrying dead weight. Names was not in our future and who knows what is available behind the scenes and a little more cap space is always a good thing in this era. Names made a name for himself because of his line mates in Tpa and not because he drove the line.

We dont need anybody else, we just need to fix what we have. We did a good job getting Andersson back on track now its Chytils turn. As I have said all along Chytil is only in the minors til close to the end of the month for a reset because our schedule was so light and because he needed it. I'm not sure if Kravtsov will play much NHL this year until Kreider is dealt unless he forces himself into the lineup or injuries do. So until then this is what we are outside of a Strome move but I'm not sure management wants to move him. This might be the move that gets DeAngelo signed to a longer term. I'm happy with this, I dont think anyone should get ahead of themselves thinking we can compete for a cup this year without some serious dismantling. Stay the course, get a good pick or picks in the first round next year and keep on down the road.

I’m amazed at what I’m reading. The last thing the Rangers need is another 4th line center.

they have Strome McKegg Lias Howden all bottom 6 centers. Hell McKegg was centering the 4th line for a team in the ECF a few months ago. annnnnd then you have Chytil (an nhler) trying to get back to the NHL and you want to bring another bottom 6 guy in here??

what for?!

a 1st rounder 2011 (really, they must have planned that to later draft Kucherov, but like, why.. ), if a 4th rounder is the only thing get, couldnt anyone give more? Feels like many teams could have use for him. Highly odd

you realize that 2011 is....8 years ago, right?

Things change, bro.

Right, wrong or otherwise, I think the cap space we're talking about will be held in reserve should a second line center, or the right LHD come on the market this season --- probably closer to the deadline if the Rangers are within striking distance.

Sounds like the right approach to me.

I'm confused. I feel like over the summer people were saying to trade Namestnikov for a bag of pucks just to get his contract off the books. Now we're 2 games into the season and people are upset with the return?

He was a serviceable player for us but I'm ok with trading him. Frees up cap space and a roster spot

I know its baffling how unsatisfied people need to be over the most stupid things in life.

We effectively got a high 3rd and a boom/bust AHL dman (who is only 25) for an overpaid middle 6er...

I know there were questions about timing and purpose.

But at the end of the day, they took what was presented and they'll play it by ear moving forward.

This is more a move about having the ability to potentially go after what's on the market in February, more than it is about what's on the market in October.

No, you can absolutely bank cap space (but not LTIR space).

Imagine the cap is 100 million and there are 200 days in the season. The team can spend up to 500k per day. Let's say the team spends 475k per day for the first 100 days. That means they can then spend 525k per day for the remaining 100 days. We banked 25k for 100 days, which is an extra 2.5 mil.

I’m admittedly nowhere nearly well versed in the subject but I think what you describing is a gradual “actual” of cap space. Using your example, wouldn’t it be the same as if Namestnikov was moved at half point? Wouldn’t it give you the same $2.5m savings but more in a big bang event?

If we are talking strictly cap space maneuverability, I think what this trade did is separated (front ran) a necessity to create cap space for a separate deal instead of moving Namestnikov a part of that future deal.

It’s a solid trade. Money retained for this year. We’ve been drafting well so another pick is good. Patience LGR!

This is the point people forget when it comes these debates about trades. I’m sure in a perfect world, Gorton would have loved to have moved Namestnikov over the summer. And, I’m sure, if this was the deal in July, we’d be seeing arguments about why didn’t Gorton wait to see if he couldn’t get a better deal. It’s a cliche but trades get done when they get done. For all we know, this is the deal that’s been sitting there few an extended time period and either Gorton or Dorion finally said yes. Maybe Gorton saw Quinn cutting Namestnikov’s ice time and thought he needs to cut his losses. Or maybe Dorion looked at his roster and realized he needed Namestnikov. It is what it is.

Let's compare the overall scenario:

Scenario 1:

$204k in cap space

Panarin-Zibanejad-Buch
Kreider-Strome-Kakko
Namestnikov-Howden-Fast
Lemieux-Andersson-Smith
Haley, McKegg

Hajek-Trouba
Staal-ADA
Skjei-Fox

Scenario 2:

$2,204,367 in cap space + OTT 4th '21

Panarin-Zibanejad-Buch
Kreider-Strome-Kakko
Andersson-Howden-Fast
McKegg-Boyle($1.25m)-Lemieux
Haley

Hajek-Trouba
Staal-ADA
Skjei-Fox
Smith

Who here doesn't take Scenario #2?
Keep Andersson at center

We already know that at this rate the bottom 9 lines won't be as they are for long, and tbh, I'm not tied into anything in particular with their line numbers.

They might want to split Kreider and Kakko. Could see something like this:

Panarin-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Lemieux-Andersson-Kakko
Kreider-Howden-Fast
McKegg-Strome-Smith

If that top line ever stops being dominant, could see Buch and Kreider back together, but you cannot move that line apart right now.

Maybe, but at least so far, he's on the top defense pair on the top team, and producing.

Quite frankly I don't think Shattenkirk was very good for us. He underperformed his salary IMO by a lot and I like my defensemen to be able to play in all situations. It's yet to be proven that DeAngelo or Fox can but they are much younger players and I think there's at least possibility that one or both of them will. The all situations boat sailed a while ago with Shatty (he needs a certain amount of sheltering and a defensively responsible partner).....and Tony's offensive game was better than Shattenkirk's last year and both of them are much cheaper.

I would also note that sometimes players don't fit with certain teams and also that it's easier to fit in with a stronger and established team because almost always teams like that have also worked out established roles for their individual players. The Rangers being a young team are sorting through that and probably will for the next couple, three, four years.

*The adjectival form is "clichéd".

Sorry, I'm on a language riff and that's a pet peeve. :)

shattenkirk again lol.

not only was he bought out for cap space, he was bought out because we weren't going to have a 7 million dollar 7th dman that couldn't kill penalties. he would have been blocking one of 23 or 77. does anyone want that? no.

smith plays wing plays left D plays right D kills penalties as a right d while playing wing. I mean this was a no brainer who to buy out. and you still give namestnikov away because he's making 4 mil to do nothing but block a more useful guy.

Would've saved us a 2nd rounder. Haha, but seriously, it was risky to assume Fox would make the team right out of Training Camp. He could have easily needed seasoning in Hartford.
