Love the trade. Absolutely love it. Got what you were going to get at the deadline, but you open up space, and move a guy that doesn’t fill a role well on the team.

They can upgrade the wings really soon with Chytil and VK, and have forward depth that can do a better job on the bottom six for less.

Names had a great preseason, and I think it helped that OTT needed a stop gap to insulate their kids.

If Strome doesn’t get his shit together, then he’s the next stopgap to go imo. Which is a shame, because I like him as a utility guy, but he’s a happy passenger. I don’t see him being a driver. This team needs a bus full of drivers.

I don’t think they’re looking to solve the 2C situation by the trade deadline unless a no brainer falls into their laps
Going out and getting that 2C, would be the biggest mistake EVER! Would be going against the very nature of what we are trying to do here. Yeah, get player X, and then players like Chytil, Lias and jeez even Howden will be relegated to 3rd and 4th lines, forcing one to go to the wing......or eventually losing one or sending down someone for LIFE?
Attempting to "force the issue" when all they have to do is let things ferment a bit.......sometimes doing NOTHING is the best thing to do......its called "patience".
Now, getting Boyle might not be such a bad idea, as it would be a 1 year deal......just a back up plan and biding time.
I would just prefer they dont do anything though. (Boyle)

The Ottawa 4th in 2021 will still be essentially late 3rd. Ottawa will still stink in 20-21.

It would have been nice to get more but Namestnikov was not getting the opportunity to increase his value. He isn’t playing on the top two lines. He isn’t getting any significant power play time. How is Namestnikov increasing his value? He isn’t increasing his value playing on the 3rd or 4th line.

It seems like Namestnikov wanted to be traded. He is looking for a new contract and he needs to have a good year. Namestnikov is playing for his NHL career. Look at how many players had trouble getting a decent contract this summer.

The Rangers can’t have an unhappy player in their room. Especially on a young team.

For cap reasons alone I move Strome at the deadline ... he’s another Names / Spooner waiting to happen

Namestnikov wasn’t good and in time the kids will earn a call up to fill the spot

Hey everyone, Sens fan here.

How good of a skater and how fast is Namestikov? We need a lot more speed in our line-up.
I would say "average" at best. Sorry. Not known for speed. He does work hard though and will grind willingly. Put him with some talent and he may produce, like in Tampa.
He needs to play good minutes, like most.....i grew to like him, but oh boy.....that 4 mil was hurtful. Lol. I guess 3.25 for Ottawa in which I wouldnt be surprised if you flipped him at tdl.
He wasnt going to get minutes here, good for Names. Good luck with him, wish him the best. IMHO

Not that I’m really complaining, value isn’t too surprising, but was the immediate cap space that necessary?

Gut reaction is why not try to flip him at the deadline with the hope of getting more? Not that it’s a huge deal.
This is right, but I am just thinking it is also about WHO will be taking that ice time now. Ya' gotta believe JG wants it to be a kid.......because I dont see how if it is McKegg that he is "that much" better than Names. So.....in the end, we saved the money and......thats my take.

Really? If the right young center who could slide in behind Zibanejad and work with Kreider and Kakko became available, you'd be against that move?
If the plan is moving Kreider......then WHY do that?
If the plan is FAST FORWARD, keeping Kreider and that player is a fit......then yeah, to hell with the plan of having a Chytil, Howden or Lias amount to anything special. (Sarcasm)
Maybe JG is frowning on them? If so, he just might. Hope not.

Did Vlad play in the first two games? I watched and did not see him... he’s probably the most invisible hockey player on the roster so I’m not at all disappointed he’s gone.

The only thing that matters is getting a second line center and allowing the team to have two solid lines. Strome fits in perfectly as a 3rd line guy, not a second line guy. I think more moves are in the works!

If you want to be upset about the trade be upset that we traded for him in the first place which was awful. Then be upset that we gave him and spooner extensions. Then be upset that it took this long to even move this guy should have been done over the summer.

but blowing him out as soon as possible was the right decision for a lot of reasons and a bag of pucks literally would have been enough of a return.

Held a soft spot for Namestnikov. Strange player, certainly leaves you wanting more. At his best, I thought he had flips of a really smart 2-way player, good teammate. Ultimately, he falls into a 'Spooner' category of sorts, an in-between player that we had at an in-between time. Strome is right there with him for that matter. Back to 90, going to Ottawa should extend his NHL relevance; it's a thoughtful deal from Gorton IMO. Sending him off is more of a thank you than anything else. Good to open the space and spot, and truly wish Namesntikov well.

too many russians. the team was russian heavy so he had to be moved. need more balance.

can't be referred to as the "enigmatic" new york rangers.

plus, no way we go undefeated with all those russians. won't happen.

I would imagine, this allows the rangers the cap flexibility to go out and sign a 4th line player and create a bottom-6 of:

Lemieux-Howden-Andersson
McKegg-_____-Fast

This removes the idea of Smith playing forward AND the team saves cap space

Brian Boyle?

Namestnikov was a much better player than Spooner. Spooner was pretty much offense only and a perimeter player who avoided going into combat areas.

That said Namestnikov is pretty average---a decent 3rd line player that a couple years back got to play 2/3rd's of a season with Stamkos and Kucherov and saw an uptick in his stats and trade value and then got himself a contract for more than he was worth. For the Ottawa fans--he's not a $4 mil player. Not a top 6 forward on a decent team either.

Yes. A million times yes to this post.

A player that many here wanted gone is now traded and the response is... *****ing and moaning?

He was useless. He was invisible. I am becoming more and more convinced that some are not happy unless they are finding new ways to make themselves and others around them miserable.

The organization is hoping that Chytil and possibly Kravtsov are pushing for NHL spots later this year. The deal for Names may not be there later this year so you make the deal now, pop McKegg into the lineup and keep rolling. Also, one would hope that this opens up more ice time for Andersson, who has looked good so far.

Third line was probably the best line after the top line for good stretches in the first game. Because a third line didn't show up on the scoreboard doesn't mean they didn't exist.

I had heard a while ago that some teams had told Boyle to sit tight until they cleared cap room. I thought at the time, the Rangers made a lot of sense. I still do.

Great timing:

1) If they sign a FA Center, a whole week of team practice
2) If no signing, bank cap space for the entire year so they'll have an option to take back $ in any deal

Disappointed they needed to retain, as there goes 1/3 slots (less of a worry now since Spooner is moved to buyout from retained)

I was under the impression the fans lost the crush with Names once it came out that although he was born in Russia, he lived the vast majority of his life in Michigan.

The name sounded like an import car, but it was really a domestic vehicle.
