I guess the only thing that really confuses me is why NY didnt do this earlier when that cap savings couldve maybe retained Yandle.

As a neutral observer, I am voting that the Rangers win this but I see the reasons for both. I'd give Zibanejad slightly higher value in a vacuum plus they got the second. He is younger, cheaper for this year and cost controlled on his next contract. NYR get younger and some cap relief without losing much production, plus the 2nd to help restock the cupboards. Its a nice move to help retool while still being able to push for the playoffs. For Ottawa, Brassard will probably be cheaper in real dollars in 2017-18 and 18-19 since his contract is front-loaded and Zib is due a new one. Since I don't think Ottawa is usually a cap team, that matters to them. They also get a slightly better player, definitely more consistent one, the next few years.

My initial reaction: Why? There was no need to make this deal.

Following that, I decided to analyse this deal alot more thoroughly. This makes sense for the Sens since we have Turris who will be needing a new contract in two years. Having Brassard gives us two solid centers as a 1B/1B duo and he has three years left which he will be getting paid 3M, 3.5M & 3.5M which is a steal for his play.

Zibanejad will be an RFA next season, the Sens probably wanted to see how much he wanted and the difference between his demands and their offer was probably huge. I think this makes sense because his last contract the bridge to see what type of player he will be. Personally, I think he has grown in the past two years but I'm still uncomfortable signing him to a bigger contract as he was one of the biggest question marks on the team. He is probably looking to cash out as a 2C or 1B which is unrealistic IMO (4.5M-5.5M).

The majority of people seem to think it favors the Rangers but I see it as a win/win because both teams had their reasons behind making this move. The 2nd round pick that was added is frustrating for Sens fans but they did eat the 2M bonus and it seems like Melnyk may value that more than the pick. Rangers pipeline is bare with all the picks they have moved in recent years but saving those 5 years between Zibby & Brassard is the most important thing for them. Adding a 2nd for 2M makes sense as they have a huge amount of money.

Win/Win for both teams.

This makes too much sense. As an HFer I disagree completely.

Sens must have seen something they don't like in Zibanejad. Something not obvious to fans. I imagine the timing of this trade is due to initial contract extension talk with him. Maybe the two sides are so far apart that Ottawa felt they might as well cut ties now and maximize value?

Win/Win for both teams.

Except the part where Brassard is really good.

I disagree. The only rationale for Ottawa to make this deal in terms of pure cash. On-ice going forward, I can't see this as a win. Is Brassard the better player right now? Yes. But Zib is very close and is 5 years younger. Brassard will be 29 when the season starts. If I had to bet, I would pick Zib as the better player going forward. It also just doesn't make sense for Ottawa to give up the better pick here.

The Rangers clearly got the better end. They got the younger player, the player who is likely to be better going forward, better pick, and still managed to address their cap situation.

The Sens get a player who is better as of right now (although that may be irrelevant as they are not contenders) and gave up the higher pick. They probably make a pure cash savings. I don't get the Sens. This is a move to "compete now" on a team that probably won't be able to contend.

Pens fan here saying great trade for the Sens. Brassard is a ******* to play against. Heart and soul guy who has a great all around game. Great guy in the playoffs. Raises his intensity level.

One thing's for sure, the Sens got sick and tired of ZBad coming into camp out of shape and not living up to his potential. I don't blame them in the least. He wasn't a favourite of mine - at all.

Boucher apparently coached Brassard in the Q.

Entirely possible Dorion asked Boucher if there were any players he wanted to target, and Dorion made it happen.

There really isn't any cap savings outside of this season only. Zibs is due for a new contract next summer and will be looking for Brassard-type money, I'd imagine.

Mika has spurts of unstoppable plays, and then pure invisible. I'm hoping Brassard is going to be slightly more noticeable for Ottawa than Mika was. But it is a pretty lateral move IMO, not a fan of the draft pick swap though.

Maybe they will put him on with Kreider and we will call it the "INVISIBLE Line". How can u stop a line you CAN'T SEE?!?!?

60 points is first line numbers. this isn't 2006

60 points and 58 points in the last two years

Those are low end 1C numbers

What would 1st line numbers be? A specific amount of points? Or simply top 30 amongst Centers? Top 90 amongst Forwards?

Except last year where he was in the top 30 points for centers?

if you look at 5on5 play he's not a top line center in any area.

We need to get Giroux next, we could have an all Gatineau 1st, 2nd and 3rd line centres.
Giroux -> Brassard -> Pageau

Was honestly never a huge fan of Zib but thought he had potential just not the drive. Zib has always been afforded top line wingers and although had a 51pt season it could have been much more. I honestly believe Brassard will blow him away given his new linemates (probably Stone and Hoffman plus this Karlsson guy that I hear is pretty good)

I think it's pretty obvious to fans. He does not take the sport seriously. He never trains in the offseason, so he's always very slow to start the season and finishes strong because of this. He has trouble finding chemistry, and doesn't make his linemates better. Better to cut him loose now before more people realize he's never going to reach his "true potential".

He has always been used as a Center.

That guy also posted on your board that he is a "3C, fill in 2C"

So I don't think he entirely knows what he is talking about.

Haha, fair enough. I'm okay with the trade, nice to hear the people who watch Brassard a lot speak highly of him. I was convinced we were gonna trade ZBad for a guy like Duchene (with Ottawa obviously adding a LOT), but in this day and age, keeping the assets and acquiring a better all-round player is fine with me.

Or maybe they just feel that Brassard can anchor an offense better? He might be able to be a better fill in 1C if Turris gets injured again.

I really think this is the first of moves for the NYR.

I think either Nash or Kreider will be involved in a deal with St. Louis that sees Kevin Shattenkirk going to NYR.

But if Martin Brodeur has anything to say about it, the Blues and Rangers won't be making any trades, unless its a clear cut win for the Blues. I doubt Marty will ever want to do any business with the Rangers!
