Happy with it. Zibby's ceiling is Brassard, so very good management by the sens. I assume Z-bads knack for showing up to camp fat and slow won't stop in the big apple.

Brassard is a local boy too, so some added draw for the player and fans there.
Our top 9 looks far better with a lefty in there

Hoffman/Turris/Stone

Macarther/Brassard/Ryan

Smith/JGP/Lazar

Still think we could use a more experienced rw for the 3rd line but not a bad looking top 9

I always liked Zibanejad and still think he has some promise. I'm surprised the Sens traded him. I think, ultimately, the NYRs win this deal.

Brassard should fit in well with the Sens. Plus I love when local boys get to go play at home.

It is really obvious to all Sens fans. And everyone. Zibanejad is a man-child who doesn't show up to camp in shape. He never has. He ends up in good shape by February every year.

He promised to stay in Ottawa this offseason and train with the training staff. Which was a good step.

Zibanejad could end up a great player. Zibby is absolutely huge and could be a dominant physical centre. At his best he is amazing. He isn't always at his best.

He is only 23. He is already really good so the Rangers have a ton of potential. And an already good centre. He is not a great playmaker. Not superb on the PP. not amazing on faceoffs. He is a pretty good shooter though.

But he is not a top "professional" athlete. Most NHLers are. He might be able to become a top pro. But now he is not fully committed. He gets fat in the off season. He doesn't take being an NHLer seriously. At least not so far. That is why Ottawa traded him.

Obvious to Sens fans, sure. But just a quick glance through this thread it's obviously not obvious to everyone.

Ottawa's top 9, as long as Hoffman is retained (and you have to think Ottawa being ok with paying the 2nd to save money means they feel good about retaining him) is very solid.

People are greatly underestimating the Senators if they expect that second round pick in 2018 to be a 31-40 range.

Yep what people dont see are guys like Brown and White whom will also need a place to play sooner rather than later ,moving Zibby now for a player that probably wont be here after his contract is done ,gives the team a shot to be better now, while managing money for the future.Yeah only JGP looks like he is the special part of that line ,but who knows what kids like Lazar/Paul/Puemple etc are capable of

After letting it sink in, I've somewhat come around to it.

I've never been that much of a fan of Zib and Brassard is a better player, but there's a 6 year age difference that can't be understated.

Something that softens the blow, however, is having Logan Brown and Colin White down the centre pipeline.

With this move the Senators got a lot better.

That second round pick won't be a very high one unless injuries are a problem for Ottawa.

How did they get a lot better? Both players are very similar point wise except Mika is 5 years younger and on a higher development curve, does brassard fill a particular role that Mika didn't that makes this worth while to a team that won't win a cup atleast for another few years?

If Brassard and Bobby click even remotely, that's a pretty formidable duo.

It allows us to give a guy like Kreider the AAV needed on a long term deal instead of a short term deal because we are short on cap space.

If we turn around and sign Kreider to a 1-2 year deal then yeah, that angle goes out the window.

Trying to get a feel if this move has any bearing on the Rangers getting in on Shattenkirk... I'm thinking it doesn't increase the possibility?

Zibanajad will flourish without that scrub Bobby Ryan holding him back.

Short term Sens win. Zibby may well never reach a higher ceiling. Sens obviously felt the short term benefits outweighed what they believe Zibby's peak will be, and where salary figures will be after next season for a RFA 50pt guy. Brassard's real salary is much lower than his cap hit the next few years after this coming. 3.5 real $ and $5 mil cap hit.

I like this for the Sens for the next 3 years.

Let's not sugarcoat it, this was mostly based on Melnyk being cheap. Rangers made out like bandits.

are the nyr trying to free up salary?

Maybe a little but not really. Its about getting a 5 year younger player who is both RH and scored only 7 points less than Brassard. I love Brass but this was a very good longterm trade for us. Makes no sense for Ott unless they like that they only have to pay 3,5 or per year the next 3 years when his cap hit is 5 mill. I guess its a money trade because they have an internal cap but giving up the 2nd aswell makes no sense but im happy as a NYR fan. Great trade for us and i like Brass alot!

Most of Ottawa's offence goes through one man, regardless if they have Zibby, Brassard, or both. It seems like all both teams did was shuffle the deck chairs

I don't think Brassard is worth going from a 2nd to a 7th rounder in 2018 if I'm the Sens.

I understand the WHY for Ottawa here, but I don't think they won this deal.

We needed to shuffle the deck chairs. We weren't pleased about last season - and Zibanejad coming in out of shape really hurt us.
