I disagree. The only rationale for Ottawa to make this deal in terms of pure cash. On-ice going forward, I can't see this as a win. Is Brassard the better player right now? Yes. But Zib is very close and is 5 years younger. Brassard will be 29 when the season starts. If I had to bet, I would pick Zib as the better player going forward. It also just doesn't make sense for Ottawa to give up the better pick here.

The Rangers clearly got the better end. They got the younger player, the player who is likely to be better going forward, better pick, and still managed to address their cap situation.

The Sens get a player who is better as of right now (although that may be irrelevant as they are not contenders) and gave up the higher pick. They probably make a pure cash savings. I don't get the Sens. This is a move to "compete now" on a team that probably won't be able to contend.
You really need to look at whom we have to resign this season and next to understand .Hoffman and Ceci will be getting big raises this year as they both made peanuts ,2 MIL for hoff, and 975k for Ceci.Next season we have another kid that will be looking for another big bump in pay from the 900k he currently makes in JGP ,add in a possible raise for Zsmith from the 1,9 he currently makes and our cap will be tight .The big stuff happens the following years as Turris,EK and Stone will be looking for money

This trade helps the team now as well as keeping our capspace in line to resign the actual core of our team

Land of no calls..
Sens must have seen something they don't like in Zibanejad. Something not obvious to fans. I imagine the timing of this trade is due to initial contract extension talk with him. Maybe the two sides are so far apart that Ottawa felt they might as well cut ties now and maximize value?

Rangers paid off his bonus 3 days ago. His salary is peanuts for what he produces. That's the appeal for the Senators. Plus he gives them a different kind of center. A playmaking center seems like it was a need.

out of shape and lacks consistency and chemistry with wingers on the sens (sens also dont have a good left handed center)

its obvious...but he has potential and a different set of linemates might do him wonders (someone like st louis to stamkos)

Or maybe they just feel that Brassard can anchor an offense better? He might be able to be a better fill in 1C if Turris gets injured again.

I think it's a combo. They definitely don't like the way Zibanejad trained and came into camp and they wanted a change.

Brassard got a $2m signing bonus July 15, which having the Rangers pay was part of the deal

It means nothing for NYR because they have tons of money... I get that Ott has an internal cap but this is how you lose trades in the nhl today as internal cap team.

It sucks to lose Brass(one of my favourite rangers) but we get almost the same player back, but he is alot younger and RH. And we get a 2nd rounder. The more i think about it its a great trade for us. Got alot younger without getting much worse at all.

It is really obvious to all Sens fans. And everyone. Zibanejad is a man-child who doesn't show up to camp in shape. He never has. He ends up in good shape by February every year.

He promised to stay in Ottawa this offseason and train with the training staff. Which was a good step.

Zibanejad could end up a great player. Zibby is absolutely huge and could be a dominant physical centre. At his best he is amazing. He isn't always at his best.

He is only 23. He is already really good so the Rangers have a ton of potential. And an already good centre. He is not a great playmaker. Not superb on the PP. not amazing on faceoffs. He is a pretty good shooter though.

But he is not a top "professional" athlete. Most NHLers are. He might be able to become a top pro. But now he is not fully committed. He gets fat in the off season. He doesn't take being an NHLer seriously. At least not so far. That is why Ottawa traded him.

Rangers win

Mika younger and more cost controlled and on a better trajectory AND a 2nd round pick that could easily be 31-40? I wouldn't be happy as a Sens fan, this makes them older but doesn't put them closer to a cup.

I think it's pretty obvious to fans. He does not take the sport seriously. He never trains in the offseason, so he's always very slow to start the season and finishes strong because of this. He has trouble finding chemistry, and doesn't make his linemates better. Better to cut him loose now before more people realize he's never going to reach his "true potential".

If what you say is true this is exactly what I'm talking about. The hype behind Zibs got out of control

With this move the Senators got a lot better.

That second round pick won't be a very high one unless injuries are a problem for Ottawa.

Pure budget trade. No question about it whatsoever.

Zibanejad is worth more than Brassard because he is 5 years younger and pretty much as good of a player as Brassard (maybe a very slight edge to Brassard).

This trade was purely done by Ottawa because it allows them to save real dollars.

Pathetic franchise to be perfectly honest. All that said, the gap between the two isn't huge or anything so it's not really that bad of a hockey trade: just a sad one.

Sens better keep going... they have a few more years to make some progress or else EK will go bye bye

This sounds about right, and what the Sens get in Brassard is kinda the opposite. Not big, but very talented, a good professional, a good team guy, and a guy who can be a real leader in the playoffs especially. Zibanejad is capable of doing certain things Brassard can't, but Brassard just plain old-fashioned brings it.

I'm going to miss those laser slap-shots from inside the dots, but I can see this being a win for both sides. The Rangers get Zibby insurance, too, with the 2nd-for-7th swap.

How can we encourage Erik Karlsson to walk as quickly as possible when his contract is up
Yeah because we are such a terrible team after this move :shakeheadOffense isnt an issue ,having better puck managers in our top 9 .Along with an nhl capable top 4,is something we now have .

Happy with it. Zibby's ceiling is Brassard, so very good management by the sens. I assume Z-bads knack for showing up to camp fat and slow won't stop in the big apple.

Brassard is a local boy too, so some added draw for the player and fans there.
