You really need to look at whom we have to resign this season and next to understand .Hoffman and Ceci will be getting big raises this year as they both made peanuts ,2 MIL for hoff, and 975k for Ceci.Next season we have another kid that will be looking for another big bump in pay from the 900k he currently makes in JGP ,add in a possible raise for Zsmith from the 1,9 he currently makes and our cap will be tight .The big stuff happens the following years as Turris,EK and Stone will be looking for moneyI disagree. The only rationale for Ottawa to make this deal in terms of pure cash. On-ice going forward, I can't see this as a win. Is Brassard the better player right now? Yes. But Zib is very close and is 5 years younger. Brassard will be 29 when the season starts. If I had to bet, I would pick Zib as the better player going forward. It also just doesn't make sense for Ottawa to give up the better pick here.
The Rangers clearly got the better end. They got the younger player, the player who is likely to be better going forward, better pick, and still managed to address their cap situation.
The Sens get a player who is better as of right now (although that may be irrelevant as they are not contenders) and gave up the higher pick. They probably make a pure cash savings. I don't get the Sens. This is a move to "compete now" on a team that probably won't be able to contend.
This trade helps the team now as well as keeping our capspace in line to resign the actual core of our team
