Talk about 'potential' and salary all you like, Brassard is the best player by a mile in this deal. Zibanejad has some question marks. It's a gamble. We'll see how he progresses.

Definitely a terrible deal for Sens considering Brassard has 3 years left on current deal and is 6 years older than Zibanejad who is only getting better and has more potential . But I'd say the Sens are trying to contend now rather than later so they convince Karlsson to stay in 3 years .

Zibanajad will flourish without that scrub Bobby Ryan holding him back.

Zuccarello >>>> Ryan

we have our own zuccarello...his name is Mike Hoffman and on top of that he will also have ryan

I'm with these move. Going into the season with last year's mediocre roster ( minus Yandle) would've been an epic failure. At least with this trade we show a direction, a plan, a desire to get younger.

Truth is with or without Brass this season we weren't Cup contenders. So what's the point in waiting until we totally bottom out to trade our most valuable assets. The longer we wait, the older they get. The more they depreciate.

I wouldn't mind seeing similar deals for Klein and Zuccarello. And Nash as well, though he probably does with Girardi and Staal and we're stuck with him.

Zibanejad is now our best young player. Something this organization lacked majorly.

This sounds about right, and what the Sens get in Brassard is kinda the opposite. Not big, but very talented, a good professional, a good team guy, and a guy who can be a real leader in the playoffs especially. Zibanejad is capable of doing certain things Brassard can't, but Brassard just plain old-fashioned brings it.

I'm going to miss those laser slap-shots from inside the dots, but I can see this being a win for both sides. The Rangers get Zibby insurance, too, with the 2nd-for-7th swap.

Yes I think that is the case.

I still am not totally soured on Zibby. I don't think he is a "bad guy". Or a "bad teammate". He is a young player that has tons of talent but hasn't really committed to be a serious pro 12 months a year. 8 months a year is not enough in 2016. But he is 22/23. The thing is, he doesn't have top hockey sense, he is not a great playmaker. But physically. He is a freak. He could be the strongest centre in the league with talent at every aspect of the game except high IQ. He could be a unique, dominant 2 way player with physical skills among the best in the league. But he also might just be who he has been so far, which is decent... But nothing special. He could be a Selke type 30 goal 70 point centre. But more likely he is more what he has been the last couple of years.

Actually pretty solid lines... top 6 looks good.. 3rd line is average

If Zach Smith gets anywhere close to his production last year (25 goals), the Sens are sitting pretty with a more experienced Lazar (they can potentially get 50 to 60 goals from this line alone). FYI, all three are natural centres. JGP is a very underrated 2-way forward, a better hockey player than Zibanejad, but considered too small to be a regular top-6 centre.

In fact, I expect this line to be one of the better 3rd lines (top-10 wrt 3rd line production) in the league.

This is just wrong. Brass is not anything special defensivly and only scored 7 points more than Zib and he is 5-6 years younger. And NYR get a 2nd rounder. I love Brass but this was a great trade longterm for NYR.

I like this move for both teams, but if I had to pick a "winner", which is kind of dumb honestly, it's NY. They win in terms of value. However, I like it for both teams.

I like this trade for Ottawa.

Brassard led the Rangers in ES/PP on-ice goal differential last year and has been money in the playoffs. He's also been the Rangers top producer on the power-play over the past few years while Zibs has been suprisingly quiet with a PP that features Karlsson.

The draft pick won't be selected for another two years and is thus about six years away from making an impact in the NHL, if at all.

Stepan-Brassard made for an effective tandem down the middle without either being a top-flight #1. Zibanejad is going to have to pull his weight to ensure that the opposition can't key on Stepan. That's a risky bet for the Rangers.

I'm not sure they needed the cap space either. There seems to be more than enough to sign both Kreider and Hayes, and Zibs is going to get a raise in one season.

That's not good no matter how you spin it
Yes it is ,Zibby is a 51 point scoring center while paying with two first line wingers ,he didnt score more than 11 goals two of which were empty netters ,in the entire first half .His wingers had 21 and 18 ,and were close to ppg players .ZIbby isnt as good as most here seem to think he is ,this potential we keep hearing about ....Well its been over 4 seasons and over 300 nhl games what you see is what you get .Brassard is the far better player now and should be for the time he is with Ottawa ,by then we should be adding two very good young centers in Brown and White

Why would any of the two teams do this? The players seem to be more or less equal in value.

Okay, I can see the Rangers' idea: Zibanejad is younger, cheaper for the next 12 months, and comes with a 2nd rd pick.
And the Sens clearly seem to believe that he's the better scorer in the short term.

I think Colin White and Logan Brown have as much to do with this deal as Brassard does.

In 3 years, one or both might be ready for top six.

Brass was my favorite player on the Rangers. Trade was okay but i'm going to miss Brass a ton. Both of Zucc's best friends(Brassard and Hagelin) aren't Rangers anymore.

Trying to get a feel if this move has any bearing on the Rangers getting in on Shattenkirk... I'm thinking it doesn't increase the possibility?

Well, Jeff Gorton did say after the trade that this now allows us to take on a bigger contract. Whether that is Shattenkirk, a cap dump or a long term deal for one of our own players, remains to be seen.
