Is it possible that the Sens did something that has absolutely nothing to do with a budget?
Is it possible that both teams made a trade they feel benefits their clubs?
Is it possible that we don't have to immediately declare a winner and loser in a trade?

I just don't get the crazy, over the top reactions that seem to infect these forums sometimes.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

This is basically the new GM establishing a plan that incorporates White and Brown's place in the depth chart: Brassard and Turris both have 3 years left on their friendly deals, this is not a random occurrence.

Why worry about cap friendly deals when you have a cost controlled zibby?

I guess Ottawa wants to win now. But it doesnt make sense tbh. Brassard is SIX years older than Zib. Brassard is better but the gap isnt that big where Zib cant close it and on top you give up a 2nd rounder. Win when Karlsson is in his prime. Karlsson is only 26 lol.

I can see why Rangers did it and it would sense if Ottawa would be in "win-now" mode but they aren't.

Still Brassard is a good player so it's quite close.

I am devastated as a Rangers fan. Brassard is a winner. The kind of clutch player you need to win. A fantastic second line center. Definitely my second favorite Ranger of the last 10 years. I know nothing of Mika but I know he was highly touted and we get a second. If we did this we might as well trade Stepan and a couple of other guys too. It should have been Stepan imo. Should have been Stepan instead. People say Brassard is older but I don't think he's done improving. He's only now getting warmed up and developing a goal scoring touch he didn't have before. I feel his development was severely stunted in Columbus and he didn't really start to develop his offensive potential until he reached the Rangers he is a late bloomer.

Love brassard for the sens. He is a solid contributor for a second line centre and he will compliment Turris very well in my mind. Where I think the sens gained a lot here is when it comes to playoff time. If they can make it in Brassard is a hell of a performer in playoffs. Over the last couple of years he was the Rangers best forward once playoffs rolled around. i really enjoyed watching him play once the games meant something.

Overall I think it's a deal that will work out well for both teams.

Brassard is a fantastic passer, has a surprisingly good shot, and steps his game up come playoff time. I think most Sens fans will ultimately be happy to have him.

As a Rangers fan, I'm happy with the move. Shakes them up, gets them younger, and gives them much-needed cap flexibility. The extra second round pick is nice too. Surprised so many Rangers fans would rather part with Stepan, though. He's becoming underrated, and I think because he does his job so quietly.

IMO, the players are fairly equal in terms of value. Different players for sure but overall, same value.

Brassard is an UFA in 3 years, not saying the Sens won't be able to re-sign him but his rights could potentially be gone. Zibanejad is a RFA next year... have contract negotiations started and not gone so well? Maybe he's asking for an unreasonable pay bump?

... and the Rangers get a higher draft pick.

On the surface, IMO it looks like the Rangers win this one.

No it shouldnt. Stepan is younger and a better twoway player than Brass. This was about getting younger and it was a great trade for us and i like Brass alot. We got 5-6 years younger, Zib only scored 7 less points than Brassard this season aswell.

I respect that attitude as a Sens fan. I think we got one of the best Rangers skaters for like Ottawa's 5th,6th,7th best skater.

We got Phaneuf and now Brassard. We want to win now. We have vets now. And lots of youngsters still.

I think Ottawa is a top 8 teamin the NHL next season amd makes playoff push. With better coaching and the talented roster we have.

As a Pens fan, very happy to see Brassard leave the blue shirts. He's such a useful, smart, under valued player. Zibby is pretty meh in my eyes.

Why worry about cap friendly deals when you have a cost controlled zibby?

Because Zibanejad isn't as cost controlled and he first appears. His last season salary is $3,250,000, so his QO is high.

If Zibanejad scores 50 points again, he's going to get paid 5+ million on a long-term contract. Probably a bit front loaded too. Almost certainly more than Brassard regardless. He'll be 24 and be two years from UFA. Basically, he is "cost controlled" for three years, just like Brassard.

If he doesn't score 50 and gets 40, he's still going to get a one year deal worth 4 million because he's young and has "upside".

Regardless, his RFA status doesn't help Ottawa if he tehy can't use it to keep his price low.

Wow. Great deal for the Sens.

I have to say you are correct. Derick has 3 years left on his deal which will put him at around 31 while the rangers are going to have to re-up Mika as he has one year left on the cheap. For me being a Flyers fan I really like this deal. Brassard always seemed to play hard while Zibanejad does not bring it every game, He has the size but does not use it. Soft comes to mind. I guess Sens and ranger fans would know better but I like this deal for Ottawa.

Stepan is not a better player than Brassard. LMFAO. Not only that he has become very brittle and his skating sucks. In fact now NONE OF OUR CENTERS CAN SKATE! We just lost speed where it counts. So please just stop. It's already a sore day as it is.

The age gap doesn't matter much considering Ottawa is getting back a piece they needed (top ,6 playmaking left hand C) that'll make their team better now.

This trade makes Ottawa better over the next 3 seasons and also opens up budget space. Unless Zibanejad becomes the wet dream big bodied 70 point ghost of Ryan Getzlaf 1C that he once was thought to have a chance to become, then this trade is a win for Ottawa.

After letting it settle, it seems like a win-win trade to me.
