Can't be married to a system. Klein brings balance that this core really needs. DZ-Moore is a god awful third pair that's been getting abused all season, it had to stop.

If you expected DZ to return a young puck moving defenseman with no red flags, you were expecting too much. I'd have liked Ryan Ellis though.

Now if they can trade Moore I'll be just fine.

Always loved Klein. Oddly enough, I never double took at the idea of him being a Ranger because he's the type of manageable player a good defensive squad holds on to. Hard hitting, no nonsense crease clearer, doesn't take penalties in doing so. VERY defensively responsible.

With that, he has no offensive upside at all really.

It's definitely a good look to have him in front of Hank for the time being...

Just a needs analysis coupled with our GM's past moves.

We needed a big time scorer, he gets us a big time scorer. We needed grit, he got us the best grit guy available at the time - Clowe.

Kessler slumping. Vancouver slumping. Familiarity with AV. His production diminishing.

Stastny will command more than the Avs want to give him and he fits the m.o. of this team - inconsistency.

They're realistically the best 2 options out there. Stastny is probably actually being shopped, Kessler will require prying.

I don't see another big move available. Sather is always in on them, if not the one making them.

We need a 2c moving forward. This is the type of futures move Sather makes. Veterans. Klein is 29, but here for the next 5 years (hypothetically). That's Sather's future planning. Expect more of the same.

Love it. I thought Klein would be much more difficult to pry from NSH; he's on a sweet contract and is a legitimate, unquestionable top four RH dman who is extremely reliable defensively but has reasonable offensive upside. In fact, I've always felt he had a touch more offense to him than he was able it display in NSH's system.

I just don't understand why they couldn't give him more time. He seems like a good fit in AV's system. MDZ used to have a lot of value. Trading him for an older 3rd pairing guy is the epitome of sell low.

On the fence about thos one. I guess the Ranger can now withstand losing one of Stralman or Girardi, but our defensemen have struggled offensively other than McD and Kevin Klein doesn't address that need at all. Defensive defensemen is a redundancy on this team and has been for some time.

Now that our right side is shored up, Sather better not hesitate to trade one of Girardi or Stralman if he believes we can't retain either of them.

Klein is not a 6/7. Should be a decent #4 option locked up at a good hit. Maybe we let Stralman go in the summer now.

I don't know much anything about Kevin Klein, except that I'm disappointed by the lack of Kevin Kline jokes.

Based on what I'm reading in this thread, if he's matched with Moore, then he's the defensive conscience and Moore doesn't have to keep on playing to his weaknesses in his own end. Sounds fine to me.

What I personally believe this means is that McIlrath will be traded and isn't in the team's long term plans.

as much as i would like to believe that, im gonna say not related in anyway.

as for this move. i love it.

3 reasons.

1. his contract is 4 yrs at a good cap hit. that bodes well for us going forward give the cap hell were gonna be in with girardi and cally deals.

2. this is a good solid defenseman who can play it tough and is very reliable defensively. blocks a lot of shots, skates very well and is mobile with the puck. solid passer and has a very good hard shot when he uses it which isnt nearly enough.

he can play top minutes and will slot in nicely on the right side. makes the defense much better today.

3. look, del zottos value was zil. we ruined his value and his play didnt help. we had very little to work with here. his play was poor. his attitude was damaged. av didnt like him from the get go. he isnt productive and he isnt very good defensively.

given all that, we did well to get a cap friendly top 6 dman who can play all zones and no matter what you all believe, is a better dman than mdz right now.

we turned a guy who wasnt helping us into a guy who has a great contract and will help us. period.

hard to be unhappy with this move both long and short term.

Look for Sather to approach Vancouver with some "Torts kind of players" ie. shot blocking mofos.


I don't know, I like the team alot lately. Last night sucked but overall they have been good. Chemistry is important, but than again, So is AV's vision.

Klein is a solid player, but not sure how I feel about this one. Neutral at best.

To be fair, though, with McDonagh's emergence as an offensive presence, and MDZ not exactly gelling with AV's style to-date, you have to wonder if MDZ's value was ever going to go up in NY. I have no doubt he can shine in the right system, but that doesn't mean we were ever going to get a top-quality return for a guy who hasn't shown consistency.

A highly overpaid Scott Gomez got us: not Scott Gomez, Higgins, McDonagh (our #1 defenseman), and the ability to sign Gaborik.

Would it be fair to expect that return for every soft overpaid center? Obviously not. This guy is a rock whose locked into a good contract. MDZ is younger, but he's a soon to be UFA in a few years, where Klein is 29 and locked up at 2.9 million for 4 years. He's a rock.

Don't know much about Klein, other than his name sounds Jewish. However, I think those who think MDZ has a lot of upside are, ahem, mistaken. He's been around for five years, is slow as molasses, can't hit the net if they gave him a laser sight, has no real hockey sense, etc.

From what I gather from other posters, probably a good trade for us. I just don't think MDZ will ever amount to much, people were bamboozled by his play as a 19 year old, he's never come close to that, and likely never will.

Why do people think Klein is a bottom pair guy? He absolutely is the #4 with McD, G, Staal now. He's always been a second pair guy. One of the best contracts in the league. Steady as a rock. Not a lot of thrills but he's reliable as anything, very good skater, tough, physical.

I like this trade. We really needed a top 4 defensive D-man. Way too much running around in our own zone. Klein is responsible and nasty. On a good contract as well.

This is a good trade for both sides. Del Zotto will play much better with Trotz, under the guiding of Weber and Josi.

While this is a great idea theoretically. MDZ wasent going to turn it around on the rangers. They had no choice at this point. What they should have done was move him two years ago
