BTW, considering that the Rangers were asking for Marc Methot from Ottawa, and Dreger had said many times that they were looking for a D-man that can play top 4 minutes, they actually got what they wanted, and, as a plus, he's a righty.

Everyone talks about MDZ upside which was true BUT the past couple season he has regressed. he may still figure it out but he needed a change of scenery. I know its fun to rip other teams off but the fact of the matter is that we couldnt get any team to give up a substantial return because of del zotto's regression

McKenzie reporting we didn't want Picks/Kids for him. We wanted balance. Sturdiness. Reliability.

Sather going for it now. Transparent move.

Still believe we're going to trade for Stastny or Kessler.

This. Was hoping for a player with upside. I've heard good things about Klein, but haven't watched him, so will reserve judgement for now. If he can be Stralman 2.0 for the next 4 years, I'll take it, but it still doesn't address the need for a PMD.

That's what the selection of Julius Honka is for.

I'm not worried about saving a spot for him either. You asked why he was even being discussed and I answered. I'd go with picking him at 10 and giving him a huge role in the AHL meaning more than giving him one game in the NHL while the team as a whole, and the d in particular, looked like a pile of hot garbage.

But hey, what do the Rangers know about D? They just got McD when his value was low, drafted Staal, found Girardi literally out of nowhere, and turned Stralman from a fringe NHLer to a solid second pair d-man.

I'd be willing to bet everyone in the Rangers organization is regretting that pick today, so I don't see why the fact that he was chosen #10 means much.

From what I saw (yes only one game, so perhaps that itself is meaningless) and what I hear about him.. his main asset is his toughness and I'm sorry I just don't get excited about players like that. If we're gunna play a tough guy who struggles in most other aspects of his game, I'd rather it be a 4th line forward than a defenseman.

Hmmm

Defensive veteran with long-term, manageable deal. Seems just the type of guy EDMONTON needs. Maybe a precursor. Maybe we have a prospect they want but needed to package him with an under contract d-man for Yakupov?

And we also have two UFA defenseman on the right side

I'm not worried about having a spot for a guy who looked way way out of place in his only game he played with the pro team. When do the Rangers give a guy literally one game to show himself?

Not that it will change your opinion, but he played 2 games. Kreider wasn't ready last year at the same age. Look at him now. McI has played well in Hartford. It's only a matter of time before he's playing full time in the NHL. It remains to be seen how well he will play, but he will be here.

Who/what would we give up for one of these centers? Honestly think center is one of our strong suits with Step/Rich/Brass.... Boyle/Moore as a 4th center is just fine.

Had to jump on at work to post. Whatever, there are THREE people in the office today.

I CALLED this trade, two months ago, if not more. I'm so proud of myself.

I think I even started a thread in the Trade section. I'm going to have to dig that up later... Or right now :naughty:

December 8th.

I am Glen Sather.

Really like the deal, too, should mention that

Del Zotto had 5 years to figure it out...let Nashville deal with him trying to figure it out now. Klein is a defensive dman who knows how to play the game...were we all hoping for Colin Wilson and Klein....sure...but DZ has been so bad that his value sucked. We should have traded him after his 3rd year....but Sather doesn't pay enough attention to know this.

Klein is a more physical version of Stralman. Great #5 defender who can play on the 2nd pairing if he has a solid partner. My gut tells me that this means the Rangers don't plan on bringing Stralman back. You can't pay them both, and Stralman is supposed to be a puck mover, but doesn't see any PP time and creates little offense.

That being said, I think Stralman is a better fit for this system than Klein is.

The return is about what you could expect for Del Zotto given how poorly he's played this season. Great asset management by the Rangers.

If Del Zotto finds his game again, the Preds walk away from this deal laughing.

Stralman's return will depend on his asking price. If he asks for Klein's deal, I think we can give it to him. If he doesn't, then it will be McIlrath's/Allens time to play the 3rd pairing.

It's a shame Delzotto did not work out, that first year he played I thought we had the next chris chelios. Two weeks ago on the Boomer and C show, Boomer was looking up the stats for Kevin Klien and said that is who the Rangers were going to trade DZ for, was told he was a Girardi type player....

I just don't understand why they couldn't give him more time. He seems like a good fit in AV's system. MDZ used to have a lot of value. Trading him for an older 3rd pairing guy is the epitome of sell low.
