This will help the 3rd pairing a lot, and if is a precursor for moving Girardi, great. Can someone tell me about Kevin Klein, I gather that he's a stay at home RHD, which fills the hole left by Sauer? Idk

Yeah. He can step into the top 4 relatively comfortably like Sauer did, but its better to use him 3rd pair and heavy PK minutes.

The only reason I'm surprised by the deal is because I thought we were getting comfortable with MDZ-Moore as a pairing.

Even if he does, McDonagh will still be by far the better offensive LD option. And if Girardi or Stralman leave you'll be very happy that we have Klein. He's like Gleason/Sauer was. Not a lick of offense but solid stay at home. Dependable.

i hope your right, if he is a Gleason/Sauer type thats something we definitely need, ****ing phaneuf, hopefully if hes paired with Moore he can skate and pick up his offensive game.

Except that he plays the same position that a newly acquired player plays. Plus, I'll take the Rangers front office's opinion on NHL d-men over anybody's here. They suck at some stuff, but evaluating D talent isn't one of those things.

And we also have two UFA defenseman on the right side

I'm not worried about having a spot for a guy who looked way way out of place in his only game he played with the pro team. When do the Rangers give a guy literally one game to show himself?

I like it, I think it's important to have a strong 3rd pairing, and that gives guys in the Top 4 a break on PKs.

MDZ-Moore gave me the scurrs.

Shea Weber is a -9.

What's your point?

A more dramatic example: Beauchemin is +24, while Doughty is +15. Plus/minus can be an interesting indicator, but it isn't the be-all and end-all.

NYR now have

A 1st pairing shutdown-type defenseman on the 2nd pair in Staal
A 2nd pairing shutdown-type defenseman on the 3rd pair in Klein

It's not a bad situation, we just may not be able to keep everyone.

I'm not worried about saving a spot for him either. You asked why he was even being discussed and I answered. I'd go with picking him at 10 and giving him a huge role in the AHL meaning more than giving him one game in the NHL while the team as a whole, and the d in particular, looked like a pile of hot garbage.

But hey, what do the Rangers know about D? They just got McD when his value was low, drafted Staal, found Girardi literally out of nowhere, and turned Stralman from a fringe NHLer to a solid second pair d-man.

This could be seen as a clear indication of what Del Zotto's ranking really is among GMs that are looking for a defenceman like him.
If Klein adds toughness back there without any glaring weaknesses, that would be good. I confess I do not know anything about him.
I hope he can shoot the puck from the blueline well. Not sure if he is a powerplay candidate or not, guess I will read more in this thread for that info.

I think this move was more about getting rid of Del Zotto, who the coach seems to have a real problem with, than making the team better.

If he likes smart players, why does he play Callahan and Hagelin so much?

I'm no hockey scout, but I think that both of these guys are intelligent hockey players. They are both responsible defensively, and are world class penalty killers. They don't have great offensive instincts, but I certainly wouldn't criticize their overall intelligence. Also, who should those minutes be going to?

Kevin Klein is a really nice asset who solidifies the defense. He also gives us wiggle room with Girardi, and Stralman. Last year, I'd criticize this deal, but I think this is a great deal given Klein's contract, and MDZ's current value.

For the record I don't dislike Klein but I hate the idea of getting that much older. Not a good or bade trade to me at the moment.

This. Was hoping for a player with upside. I've heard good things about Klein, but haven't watched him, so will reserve judgement for now. If he can be Stralman 2.0 for the next 4 years, I'll take it, but it still doesn't address the need for a PMD.

I am completely fine with this.

Here's the reality, I know DelZ is young and has serious potential, but he's only ever shown it in spurts. The mark of a great players is once you've been "found out" by the rest of the league, you still manage to produce. Yes he had a stellar beginning, but he tapered off once people knew what to expect from him. I will not miss his 1231786235 attempts at hail mary passes. Regardless, a change of scenery may do him good.

I think they see a lot of what he brings in Moore, which I agree. This will also free up MacTruck to play more on the offensive side of the puck.

All in all, I think this is a fantastic trade.

I think Klein and Staal become our 2nd pairing and AV puts Stralman with Moore to try and wake him up offensively.

i was pretty nervous when i first saw del zotto traded to nashville because i didnt think we would be getting a young forward in return as nashville doesnt have many good ones that ud think could be tradeable. klein is reasonable enough return though. seems like a pure hockey trade where both teams trade from a position of strength to fix an organizational weakness.
