Klein isn't unlike a less credentialed version of Girardi, on Girardi's initial deal.

With out situation at LHD and RHD, this makes a lot of sense. I'm not saying I'm thrilled, but I think this will benefit NYR in the long run. Klein is on a better priced deal than Del Zotto would have likely gotten.

By the way, of the players who have hit arbitration or held out on NYR,

Avery
Zherdev
Dubinsky
Del Zotto
Stepan

4 of 5 have been traded or let go.

:cues ominous music

It is funny though that in the main board, the consensus is that the Rangers got the better end of the deal while here, it's the opposite. Anyway, we shall see.

I know people love Mcilrath and i love his toughness BUT he doesnt seem to be a talented defensemen. yes he is young but even for a young guy he doesnt have strong skills yet he was picked in teh top 10

Are you kidding? For a young DMan with his size he is very capable defensively.

do not like, cant wait to see Del Zotto find his offensive game in Nashville and everyone here scratch their heads at the thought that he can actually hit the net. Tyutin 2.0.

at least Klein is on a great contract, if he can be Sauer 2.0 ill be happy, but i still think DZ has alot of potential.

meh. even if del zotto finds his offensive game in nashville he would still be a 3rd pair dman for us.

While I'm not quite sold on it myself, a 3rd pair d-man for a guy who will likely also be a third pair d-man isn't going to make any team "much better." It's a relatively minor role.

Agreed, but I would've much rather packaged MDZ with someone like Brassard to make an actual trade.

This is a sideways trade for what should've been a trade chip that could've been used to improve the team. I think we failed to do that.

This will help the 3rd pairing a lot, and if is a precursor for moving Girardi, great. Can someone tell me about Kevin Klein, I gather that he's a stay at home RHD, which fills the hole left by Sauer? Idk

Nothing to do with fighting. I think Stralman likes NYC. I think Girardi likes NYC. I thought both were going to resign. Getting Klein doesn't change that.

So, best case scenario, everyone resigns, McI makes the team next year and NYR has a d-man to trade. Maybe McI doesn't start in the NHL next season. Maybe someone doesn't resign. Maybe the team gets an offer too good to pass up for Girardi or Stralman. Maybe someone gets injured.

I don't think this has anything at all to do with McIlrath. When prospects are on the bubble between leagues, it's not wise to plan that they'll make it IMO, much smarter to plan that something goes wrong, so that if everything goes right, you have an extra asset.

DZ's Qualifying Offer was the same 2,900,000 that Klein makes, so this will have, probably, saved us a bit of cap space

Klein going forward is a top 4 defenseman. Del Zotto is not. Simple as that. This is an upgrade on a similar contract on the RIGHT SIDE which we desperately need.

Poile with two great buy-low moves in the past week. MDZ can't be any worse and he could improve significantly in NSH. MDZ picking up assists feeding Weber for bombs on the PP isn't outrageous.

For the record I don't dislike Klein but I hate the idea of getting that much older. Not a good or bade trade to me at the moment.

That would have been intriguing no doubt, but then we have a hole at center and on the PP, or we have Falk back there full time. Neither is very attractive to me.

Its funny all season long fans would have paid to have DZ traded now we got back a decent d-man and everybody is acting like MDZ is leetch lol

What did yu think we were gonna get for MDZ, Kane? Wheeler?. the fact is MDZ always has had potential but the last couple years he has really regressed. sather tried to rip off someone but nobody would bite

Nothing trade value, exactly...addition by subtraction

Which means nothing. Zherdev got more money in arbitration than the Rangers were willing to pay, so they let him walk. Avery's antics had become tiresome and his on ice performance had diminished. Dubi held out on his 2nd contract, then signed another contract for 4 years before being traded. Had nothing to do with the holdout. DZ didn't miss any training camp time IIRC. And he was traded because of his play, not because of any contract squabbles. If he was playing solid defense and had 25-30 points, would we have traded him? Nope.

It's bad asset management only in the aspect that the Rangers allowed Del Zotto's value to diminish. However, Klein gives the Rangers something they lack on the backend and that's a physical element.

BTW, unless I'm mistaken, Klein's one goal this year came against the Rangers at MSG.

who cares about mcilrath?

1) he has nothing to do with this

2) i'll be shocked if hes ever a regular for the rangers

Except that he plays the same position that a newly acquired player plays. Plus, I'll take the Rangers front office's opinion on NHL d-men over anybody's here. They suck at some stuff, but evaluating D talent isn't one of those things.
