What I personally believe this means is that McIlrath will be traded and isn't in the team's long term plans.

That makes about this much sense

Just saw a report on Twitter that the Nashville operations staff is already working on reinforcing the end boards in preparation for MDZ's point shots.

um really ?

as much as i would like to believe that, im gonna say not related in anyway.

as for this move. i love it.

3 reasons.

1. his contract is 4 yrs at a good cap hit. that bodes well for us going forward give the cap hell were gonna be in with girardi and cally deals.

2. this is a good solid defenseman who can play it tough and is very reliable defensively. blocks a lot of shots, skates very well and is mobile with the puck. solid passer and has a very good hard shot when he uses it which isnt nearly enough.

he can play top minutes and will slot in nicely on the right side. makes the defense much better today.

3. look, del zottos value was zil. we ruined his value and his play didnt help. we had very little to work with here. his play was poor. his attitude was damaged. av didnt like him from the get go. he isnt productive and he isnt very good defensively.

given all that, we did well to get a cap friendly top 6 dman who can play all zones and no matter what you all believe, is a better dman than mdz right now.

we turned a guy who wasnt helping us into a guy who has a great contract and will help us. period.

hard to be unhappy with this move both long and short term.

Spot on post ODC.

Why do people think Klein is a bottom pair guy? He absolutely is the #4 with McD, G, Staal now. He's always been a second pair guy. One of the best contracts in the league. Steady as a rock. Not a lot of thrills but he's reliable as anything, very good skater, tough, physical.

So stralman, despite out playing staal and girardi all year is the guy he knocks down?

The upside of this deal is that we get a decent defensive defenseman on a long, long term deal for a relatively low number, who can play the right side.

The downside is that this is far from a Goligoski return. But for the role MDZ was playing, not on the PP, this makes more sense. With McDonagh running the power play Del Zotto's last useful card to this team had been discarded.

Yes, but do NHL teams not make note of prior trades? I would think an NHL GM would say, "We can't make the Dallas mistake." Not, hey, "Let's make a huge mistake."

Everyone's had a lot of bad games and made a lot of mistakes this season. MDZ used to have a lot of value. If you want this team to continue getting better you don't sell low on your assets.

Sather didn't have the foresight to sell high on him. At this point, is there any belief that his value would go back up given more time? I don't think there is, so Sather got what he could for him before his value sunk any lower. I still would have liked to get a younger player back, but we'll see how it works out.

Because all the "experts" commenting on him don't watch him.

Never thought I'd write "well done Sather" in a post...but there ya go. Klein is one of my favorites. Gritty stay at home. Great contract. Only negative I see for NY is that you got older (not that big of a deal, but that's all I got).

Facebook Rangers fans make my head hurt. "MDZ was so good why trade fire Sather fire AV"

I know its a 23 yr old for a 30 yr old but some of you guys saying this is not a good deal are nuts. I personally like it a lot. Balances the D nicely. Klein can be a top 4 and he's a RD which is huge since Girardi and Stralman are UFA

Go with
McD, Girardi
Staal, Klein
Moore, Stralman
Falk
with Allen and McIlrath call ups.

I think they let Stralman go next yr and ease McIlrath into that 3rd pairing

Except that isn't true. Maybe earlier in the season, but right now, both Girardi and Staal and playing better than Stralman.

Agreed...

Stralman has made up for SO many bad turnovers and mistakes by his defensive partners. He even looked good in the Islander game and NO ONE looked good in the Islander game

Really sounding like Klein is a good fit. Hearing good things but we'll see.

Gotta think he starts on the 3rd pair just to not jumble the pairs so much.

On Boomer and Carton a few weeks back, Boomer mentioned that he was looking up Kevin Klein, because the Rangers might be getting him. He was right.

I don't have a problem with the trade. I had hoped for more, but I guess Del Zotto's value really was sunk. Klein is a good player.

I just don't understand why they couldn't give him more time. He seems like a good fit in AV's system. MDZ used to have a lot of value. Trading him for an older 3rd pairing guy is the epitome of sell low.

Yes, but he's not that, he's a terrific 2nd pairing RD.

Last year at this time an MDZ RoR trade seemed possible… MDZ's value has dropped. The overall return is more than fair.

Decent deal for both teams I suppose.

Del Zotto got that potensial upside to be a offensive d-man, but can't play D to save his life at this time in his career. And doesn't seem to get his potential out while being in New York.

Klein got almost no offensive potential, but is a quality defensive defense-man, that can play his position very good. So, I guess it comes down to what Rangers need short term.
