My God has time flew by. I remember Lundqvist battling it out with Weekes for the starting role.

Look, the Rangers will not look to trade Lundqvist unless he asks to be dealt, which is highly unlikely. He will be here for the last 2 years of his deal.

Next season we are looking at Lundqvist getting 40-50 games with Georgiev and Shesh splitting the rest (unless one severely out plays the other). Those 2 will split their time with the big club and Hartford, with Shesh likely starting the season there.

The following season I can see Lundqvist sliding to the backup role with who ever wins the race for #1 between Georgiev and Shesh.

Once Lundqvist contract is up i think he retires.

Feels like yesterday

Make your dumb personal comments all you want, you sound like the Blackhawks before they traded Hasek. My opinion comes from my father a goalie who worked with Craig Anderson when he was a youth in Park Ridge Il. my dad knows a thing or two about the goalie position and talent potential. With that you tire me. No more need to converse, I will just come back and laugh at all you clowns if a trade is made.
In all seriousness, the talent level top to bottom in the NHL is exponentially better than Hasek's era and goalie's are all trained and honed from a very young age. It will be really tough for a goalie to shine head and shoulders above their peers again like they used to with the best of the league. I'd love to see the same goalie win the Vezina 2+ times in a row and 4+ over a career, and also be considered top 5 for the rest, but those days are long gone. Being consistently at the top is the best one can really hope for nowadays with league parity forwards-wise and goalie-wise as well.

I think next offseason is the time to worry about the 3 goalie situation. I fully expect Shesty to get most of his games in Hartford this first year here.
If all goes well, Shesty will live up to the hype and we've increased any potential trade value Georgie has.

Taking Shesterkin out of the equation for a second, I'm actually curious if we have a real open competition for the starting job next season.

Georgiev has 43 games the past two years, including 33 last year. That 33, could easily creep closer to 40 and beyond without too much imagination. It's certainly not as likely to regress. At 23, he's right at that age when some goalies really start to take it up a notch. I don't know if 50 games is a given for Lundqvist. It very well could be closer to that 40 mark.

I think it really depends how Georgiev starts his season, if it’s anything like the last 2, his starts will weigh heavier toward the end of the season when the team isn’t looking at a playoff berth

I dunno, I tend to think his progress and strong finish has him in that mix to challenge sooner rather than later --- especially if Quinn thinks he gives the Rangers the best chance to win.

My guess at starts would be more like
Georgiev ~42
Lundqvist ~30 (most in the early season)
Shesterkin ~10 (mostly after the trade deadline)

And I don't know how happy that will have Lundqvist.

At some point it's kind of inevitable he is going to get less games

Less and less games, and maybe he does retire, or ask for a trade if one can be made.

If Lundqvist gets less than 35 games in the first 41 of the season next year, that will be closer to a sign of sanity on the part of the Rangers than a sign of his decline.

And I don't know how happy that will have Lundqvist.
I think he'd be fine with that. He's shown himself to be team first and I can see him taking on an Assistant Goalie Coach mentality where he takes pride in the young guys' play. Sure he'd prefer to be full time starter, but he almost assuredly will not make that known either explicitly or passive aggressively

We won't be seeing:

Giannone: *half whispers scared for his life* "Henrik....do you think didn't get the start today because...."

Henrik interrupts: "I don't know, ask Coach".

Can’t wait to see what this kid can do once Allaire gets his mechanics fine tuned. He already has world class reflexes, working on his angles and positioning with the best goalie coach in the world is gonna do wonders for him.

To me Georgiev is just a trade piece that keeps adding value.

From what I've read, seen, heard all about..... Georgiev is a solid piece that might bring back a decent prospect/ mid round pick. Shesty could be the next all world goalie. Geo is a guy that you can get to the playoffs with and make a run if he gets hot. Shesty sounds like a guy who can bring a middle of the pack team into the playoffs and carry them deep by himself.

What's there to worry about? This position is a common roadblock for rebuilding teams, and the Rangers have a chance to totally bypass it. Then there's also that Lindbom kid in Sweden.

My dad taught high school English, but I'm pretty sure I've never quoted Shakespeare on here.
This is a hockey board, no one would expect you to quote Shakespeare here! You could tho and I wouldn’t make a personal attack against you.

I mean, you name yourself in reference to one of the looniest posters we've ever had, and then compare our backup to arguably the most talented goaltender to play the game. And you expect to be taken seriously with that?
I didn’t name myself in reference to anyone and Hasek was so great with the Hawks they traded him for Beauregard. Get a clue Mr Hockey Maven.

Wolfy? Wolfgaze? I am not sure who he's referencing. Did we have multiple wolf related posters?

I cannot see a scenario where he accepts a trade. I can (hopefully, maybe, if all the conditions come to be) see one where he accepts a job in the organization. But then again, Henke is such a competitor, I cannot believe he would hang it up with something still in the tank.

1) I’m not sure there’s a trade he would accept. What cup-contending team really needs a goalie? Calgary maybe....

2) At this point he’s pot committed to be ing a career Ranger. And there’s some intrinsic value to that.

I agree. The only thing to possibly wonder about is if he would retire early and take a position in the org. But I doubt that very much as he is such a high level competitor and there are some names on the record sheets that are within striking distance.

Toronto needs a backup goalie, why not try to sell them on Georgiev? He did utterly dominate them this season
