Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] G Igor Shesterkin signs extension with the Rangers (8 years, $11.5m AAV)

lol can’t wait to see how who they dump his contract on five years from now.

I will say they pretty much had no choice. He is that entire team.

Sounds like you have no idea on goalies

Nobody does. It's the most variable position in all of sport. Only idiots would give any goalie more than 5-6 years at manageable cost (like 5-6 million).

And, hilariously, the two most consistently excellent goalies of the last decade+, Lundqvist and Price, retired without winning the Cup, in large part because they were overpaid despite their consistent excellence.

And fans complain on a goalie who is making half that for half the term in Jarry. No way I give a goalie that money and term.

How is that a valid comparison?

sure Jarry makes half the money…but he also sucks.

I make less than 1 percent of Shesterkin’s AAV. Not sure why the Rangers didn’t talk to me about a contract first.

Goalies are the field-goal kickers of the NHL.

And the teams that realize it fastest tend to win the most.

🤷‍♂️

You’d think the NYR for once in their lives could leverage the attractiveness of their market for a discount. But they take on all these players that force their way to NYR then pay them as if they don’t want to be there.
He's like the best goalie in the world and signed the same deal as Will Nye in Toronto, who has one career best 10th place point finish to his name. Insane to think this is some overpayment.

They have Bobrovsky contract, who also plays in a very attractive, no state tax market hanging over their head. They have to at least give Shestyorkin the same contract adjusted for rising cap. And considering the taxes angle, you could make a point Igor took the discount as is.

Brutal. Average goalie. His best feature is that he usually gives his team a chance to win in the playoffs. But even then he gives up back breaking softies. And for 11.5M I want my goalie to also be good in the regular season. He is the most overrated goalie I can remember. He's as talented as any goalie in the league but as mentally strong as Mika Zibanejad. He needs to find himself for 20+ games a season every season.
wow we've reached a new level of dumb in this fanbase

Running backs would probably be the more apt comparison.

I use kickers cause they're involved in so many of the points scored over the course of a season, but sure, running backs work too.

The point is, the gap between the absolute best goalie in the league and a league average goalie is not worth the gap in price.

So out of 64 NHL goaltenders at a given moment, you'd say he's ranked somewhere like 30th - 35th?

they are in an uneviable position. It had to be done, but now they pay a guy this much to play 3/4 of their games. And as teams are trending towards tandeming their goalies in regular season play, rangers will have to get their value by playing him more and THEN ride him for as long as it takes. Its a dilemma for Drury, but hey, this is the way the cookie crumbles.

No, the level of dumb is thinking that a goalie that is average in the regular season making 11.5M is the biggest level of dumb I've seen. And once again even in the playoffs he is good for a softy a game. Rangers weren't the better team but the nonstop softies in the Tampa and Florida series were a pattern. Most overrated goalie, maybe player in the league. People only rate him as high as they do because they want to mock the Rangers for being a shitty team propped up by their goalie. But this is the first season where he's truly seeing bad defense and he has completely sunk with the ship, doing absolutely nothing to keep them afloat. Meanwhile washed senior citizen Quick is doing all he can to keep the team in playoff contention. The LOL Rangers suck and are only good because of generational goaltending have been the narrative since Hank. So this fanbase overrates their goalies because they want to hate their own team.

Why not use Helly as the Comp. Helly has outperfomed Shesty the last 2 years.

So what should he be making on an 8 year deal?

I'm pretty sure he meant among starting goalies and goalies in a 1A/1B tandem.
Teams need 2 goaltenders on the roster. If the backup is a useless league min plug then you need to ride a starter heavily to balance out the weakness, making them of greater importance. No different than if the third and fourth line give no scoring, you need your first liner to really carry a heavier scoring load. If the backup is good, you can have a lesser "starting" goalie because they can split a more even workload.

Essentially, all 64 "at a given moment in time" goaltenders need to be evaluated to understand a particular one's place, same as evaluating 384 "at a given moment in time" Forwards.
