Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] G Igor Shesterkin signs extension with the Rangers (8 years, $11.5m AAV)

A $10m goalie just went to two SCF in a row

It’s worth it

I love when people bring up Bob as an example of why long-term, big money goalies are worth it, when even honest Florida fans admit they have no idea what the hell he's going to play like heading into any given season.

Yes, the guy who has zig-zagged between great and bad seasons his whole career put a good playoff run (HE WASN'T EVEN THE STARTER WHEN THE PLAYOFFS BEGAN), and a good season there-after. Let's all spend spend double digits on goalies now!

Bob has won 2 Vezinas and has been nominated to 4. He’s deserved every penny

With the cap going up it's not as bad as people think.. He's a gamer and difference maker. With that said goalies are voodoo and he could be crap for the whole contract, but he has a great track record so far and is the teams MVP. Plus, you have Ullmark and Swayman both making $8 mil + and they aren't close to the same caliber as Igor. This isn't the same as Bob or Price getting there big contracts as his % of the cap will be lower. Obviously could get ugly by the end, but that's like most NHL contracts for players nearing 30.

Go look at his playoff stats, the value of the contract is there. The NYR should be expected to make the playoffs yearly and run through the regular season. Shesterkin isn't the issue in the regular season.
.928 svp in 28 games over the last 3 years, 2nd best behind Adin hill

Swayman also has a .928 svp over the last 3 years, only 14 games played though

Shesterkin is obviously one of the best goalies in the league, but he's going to be 29 next month. That contract runs til hes 37

Over 10% of your cap spent on the most fickle position in the sport, what could possibly go wrong?

I give it 3 years max until people are calling this deal a boat anchor.
And then 3 years later that people come around and admit it was a fine deal all along.

And fans complain on a goalie who is making half that for half the term in Jarry. No way I give a goalie that money and term.
Just think for the price of 1 Shesterkin, you could have 2 Jarrys! That's better right?

If they actually manage to get 3 years worth of peak performance from him then it'll be a miracle.

There are very few goalies in a decade that perform at this high consistent level for more than a few years. When you pay them you're gambling they'll be one of the few that do, I don't think the gamble is worth $8M+.

GMs, who I believe are much more hockey knowledgeable than some random journalists

Yes, only the truly esteemed, knowledgable hockey minds like Mike Milbury can ever ascend to the role of General Manager of an NHL hockey team.

And it's not like there's decades of evidence between trades and contracts that suggest NHL GMs have no ****ing idea how to evaluate goaltending or anything.

Sounds like you have no idea on goalies, I’ll take the 32 GM’s word over yours, as most would.

People were calling it a boat anchor before it even happened. These are the people that just want the Rangers to go into a decade long rebuild scurrying around trying to desperately find a goalie like some of these other franchises have been doing for years expecting it to magically one day work and lead them to a cup.

I'd rather keep the elite goalie you drafted and developed than let him be poached by someone else.

Shesterkin was bound to receive a significant salary, and if the Rangers hadn't offered it, another team would have provided him with $11M+ per season. Hence, the Rangers decided to be the ones to secure his services.
