Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] G Igor Shesterkin signs extension with the Rangers (8 years, $11.5m AAV)

That's not the way to look at it. It's the actual $ difference and what you'd buy with that.

A 3m signing last year was someone like a Lyubushkin. That's not worth the downgrade, IMO.

But of course that's not even the choice ... Its not as if they can just go swap for one of those other goalies anyway and pocket the difference.
You could also do 6 players at a $0.5 million upgrade, 5 players at a $0.6 million upgrade, 4 players at a $0.75 million upgrade, 3 players at a $1 million upgrade, 2 players at a $1.5 million upgrade.

Except last year when the Rangers were the best regular season team in the league, he did not lead in either of those categories.

For goalies that played at least 40 games:

Wins = 7th
SV% = 8
GAA = 10
The Rangers give up grade A chances all the time. What was his GSAX?

Also look up his playoffs stats. No one cares about reg season. We're paying him for carrying us in the playoffs.

I know. It just feels a little more jarring since the caphit is so much higher than those other mentioned players.

I have no doubt Shesterkin will be amazing for at least 5 of those 8 years (I'm a Rangers fan).
Pretty much my feeling on the situation.
I’m not in love with paying goalies high dollar/multi year deals tbh. On any give year, shesty is one of the best 1-3 goalies in the league.
Amazing positioning and reflex’s to go along with his athleticism…
He also didn’t start on a real heavy workload until his mid 20’s
kHL has shorter seasons and less physical play at that time….
Older guys who can’t play pace/long seasons etc often would go there and still perform when they got on in years…..
If shesty is a top 3-5 goalie in the league for 6 outta 8 of those years plus what NY got out of him on his last deal, take it as a win

If only the Rangers got a better defensive coach like Knoblauch. And a better D core. Then Sheshterkin couldn’t have taken all the credit on way to this overpay.

Up to 6th in Goals Saved Above Average with 3, 4, 5 all within eyesight.

People will say he needs to be a top 3 goalie every single season to be worth the upcoming extension, but that year to year consistency is a huge thing you pay for. Right now 2-5 in that category don't have that same level of track record or consistency, so we'll see in those cases.

I'd say contract only looks "bad" because Hellebuyck signed for wayyyyy less than he could have gotten, which good for the Jets. But all in all, I think he's worth it.

Yup.

A vezina level goalie is worth way more than 12 mill. They're around 50 GSAx a year. Which would realistically be worth more like 20 mill tbh.

The problem with paying goalies is you have no idea how they'll generally do year to year, even the best ones, and they can fall off at any time.

But, with Helly we know he will be top 3 every year, it's just the playoffs he needs to work on.
