Jeff Gorton hitched his wagon to David Quinn, a developmental coach with no repertoire for physical scrum-like hockey that eventually brought about the exodus of DeAngelo and Lemieux. If those two asshats are still in Rangers jerseys right now, there is 0% chance this happens. Dolan is pissed because we got rid of DeAngelo and Lemieux and after double shutouts to the Islanders and Dolan's $80M man being thrown around like a sac of cat litter, he finally said he's had enough and posted that press release attacking the league and was going to fire Gorton no matter what. JD got in the crossfire.

Tony DeAngelo will play the next game against the Bruins.

The latter would be a PR nightmare for the Rangers, on top of a nightmare. Considering that Drury was part of the decision, it would also indicate that he's being given some marching orders --- which would not be a good thing.

As for the former, I'm not sure that's quite the issue.

Lemieux isn't here because he's more or less hanging on as a fourth liner and was hoping for more of a chance in LA --- which isn't happening by the way, despite his request.

It also wouldn't have stopped or changed anything that happened --- because he never would've been on the ice when the incident with Wilson took place. At best, he would've been out there afterwards. And I don't think being out of their afterwards would've changed Dolan's rage.

Dolan is like trying to predict prime Steinbrenner, only we don't have a league-ban and a Gene Michael upon his return to hold him off.

Carp has his article up, and he mentions that if Dolan brings in a president to replace JD, there is zero reason to expect the new president to bring in their guy as GM

You can’t even hang your hat on Drury as the GM unless Dolan makes it a requirement that he stays when the next president is hired
We could possibly just keep Drury as president and GM. Maybe Dolan didn’t like the two headed structure and just liked one person reporting to him like when it was just Sather.

The NHL keeps getting itself into trouble because it can not read the room (in this case the room is an entire league of teams and their millions of fans) and just punish players in a way that is commensurate with their wrongdoing. And now two good men lost their jobs because their volatile boss snapped. We live in an over saturated sports media world where every play is viewed, reviewed, analyzed, posted, discussed, tweeted, shared, examined, etc. There was no sweeping this under the rug, but the league still feels like if they hand out a nothing punishment the incident is somehow diminished in severity like it's no big deal because the NHL office acted like it. Hockey can be a brutal, violent sport when everyone is following the rules The players and fans aren't stupid, but when they feel like the league doesn't care about them of course they're going to be angry. This should have been nipped in the bud at the league level. No amount of roster makeover on the part of the Rangers is going to completely stop Tom Wilson from being the player he is. And you can't expect him to change because he is what he is. It was the Department of Player Safety's job to act to reasonably punish Wilson for so blatantly disregarding other players' safety. It's not that I believe that a suspension would result in an immediate and permanent change in Wilson's behavior, and I don't think the Rangers players or most fans believe that either. But reasonable hockey fans expected them to do more which they refused to do.

In some of my sickest fantasies I had hoped Gorton would be fired unceremoniously for refusing to fire Quinn despite underperforming but that was more next season or the season after that. I can't believe Big Daddy Dolan made that into reality at this juncture. That was a bad hire. Gorton invested in Quinn and not the rebuild itself.

Still chuckling at the thought that John f***ing Davidson, a former NHL goalie with no college education, could negotiate with the Kremlin for Panarin’s safety. Like he’s got this extensive diplomatic resume because he manages a hockey team.
The notion that Putin even has anything g to do with the panarin thing Is absolute clown shoes

even if it is the 100% right move to move on from Gorton and JD you do it after the season is over, not right after all this, not after that statement goes out. It's the most idiotic childish dumbass move from a man child

completely ridiculous

If they didn’t support his statement as a last straw the correct thing to do is let them go as soon as possible. And that’s what happened

I get all that you're saying but all of this is based Dolan's whims. We know we was absolutely furious about what happened to Panarin and Buchnevich. That was the straw on the camel's back when Gorton didn't agree with his owner. I don't see Dolan stopping short of bringing back a player he's already paying for the final 2 games to make a statement. I don't think Jim Dolan gives a shit about PR right now. In fact, in his mind, Tony being back is a win for toughness and some balls.

Like him as GM or not one good thing about the Sather era was that Dolan did not meddle. He gave Sather full autonomy. Sather must’ve been amazing dealing with th psycho that Dolan is to have that level of respect and authority.

I don’t even know who else we could bring in that he would respect that much and have the same arrangement with.

couldn’t read anymore. The Knicks have stunk forever, with Covid there have been no tickets to sell, the internet are ads now and every team besides the Knicks has always been the talk of the town. I’m sure #2 was no better (edit) - the rest was better. Thankfully

Pre-COVID, the Knicks were consistently top 10 in the league in attendance, even with their struggles. Perhaps I should rephrase: the emphasis was never on building a proper team, it was on having star players who would draw eyeballs and bring in money.

Look, I get it. We're all shocked by this, and some people think Gorton and JD were unjustly fired. As I said, I was in no way advocating for them to be fired before this. I didn't even think it was a possibility. I mean, I was completely caught off guard by the events of the last few hours. I am in no way supporting the moves Dolan has made in a vacuum.

I don't think Dolan honestly cares if the Rangers or Knicks have a championship caliber team. He's in the biggest media market in the world (lots of ad $$) and can sell out every night even when the teams suck. I think the last three days have embarrassed him and this is the only way (or the easiest way) that he can figure out how to respond.

The whole thing is bizarre, but booting the coach for the last 3 games doesn't really make sense.
If Dury is going to the GM for at least the expansion and entry drafts getting him in before the end of the season makes a semblance of sense in that he can control the exit interviews and work with the scouting team without there being confusion
