Julien Gauthier: 6' 4" 227 lbs

SCOUTING REPORT

Has tremendous size and strength, plus excellent skating speed, which enables him to score plenty of goals. Is able to utilize his size effectively in the offensive zone. Has good instincts. Needs to become a better player in the defensive zone in order to maximize output at the highest level. Also, he is somewhat inconsistent in terms of using his big body effectively.

The description almost makes him Kreider II.

nothing wrong with being sad to see Keane go. The kid was a legit prospect. I’m fine with the trade but let’s see if he can adapt to the NHL level first before calling is a slam dunk trade. We have seen many tear up the AHL but not the NHL. Emerson Etem is a good example

Too soon, ugh.

So this kid is absolutely dressing against the Hurricanes on Friday right? Law of Former Players dictates he scores a hat trick.

He would have been exposed in the draft?

So, as of now. We have
1. Panarin
2. Zibs
3. Chytil
4. Kreider/Buch
5. Lemieux
6. Howden
7. Gauthier

assuming Gauthier takes off. Strome will likely be here for 1 more year and more than likely traded. Assuming one/if not both of Kreider/Buch are moved.

We could expose Howden and not have to worry about him being claimed.

GAUTHIER comp:

ALEX TUCH but julien has better wheels. not quite the pure offensive ability that alex has but a close comparison.

we all were talking about tuch few weeks back.

makes sense, need a forward to replace CK and this kid has the goods to perhaps be that guy.

size, speed and a heavy shot.

for joey keene ? sign me up

Watching the videos of him and that was the sense I got too, and we're getting him on his ELC and possibly a pretty cheap re-sign deal coming this offseason. Dude looks like a monster on skates. JD and Gorton were looking for a north/south forward and this dude is it.

If he is here for the long term, look at the size on wing we have: Gauthier, Kakko, Kravtsov (he's 6'4 and lean still at 19), Lemiuex, Barron, and Howden (if he is a winger). Panarin is gonna have some big boys to surround him on his opposite flank, and let's not even talk about Zibby and Chytil in the middle.

This team is going to be big, and going to potentially be physical for years to come with these players up front.

Maybe Gauthier and Howden become third liners to create a Lemieux Howden Gauthier monster line. Would be an old fashioned big third line. Pretty cool.

yep.

hes big for sure but the difference is hes a terrific skater. he has a top end gear.

alex tuch. barron. kakko and the other guys you mention, rick nash lite ?? looks like a young nash but.... hes a better skater than all those guys. this kid can really skate for a very large dude.

How is this not a win? Trade a player with no future in the org for a forward with size and skill. Could end up being a nothing trade or a great trade, either way this is a smart move.

Based on what I’ve seen, this looks like a very good comparison.

not that this is related but it kinda is nyr/canes related.

remember all the fuss when we traded
Aleksi Saarela

and now look where he is.....

ya never know

ill take a gorton trade every day...
This makes me nervous as he was another Checker who tore it up with no real NHL experience show for it.

Man, the Canes really do seem to have a weird issue with not bringing up their forward prospects.

Eh it goes both ways Dude. I don’t think it’s fair just to point out Saarela and what Keane is gonna turn out to be. I don’t hate the trade BUT let’s slow down before proclaiming him the next Kreider or even a better version lol. Let’s see if the kid can afapt week to the NHL first

To me, his size and skating alone makes him an NHLer. No doubt. How far up the lineup? That’s the million dollar question. If his hockey sense was just a little better, he’s a first liner and a very nice complementary winger to a guy like Zibanejad. But then again, if his hockey sense was a little better, we probably would not have gotten him for someone like Keane.
