exactly, we just spent a 20th overall on an unneeded 2nd pairing Dman, unneeded because we already have a bunch of players and prospects that are 2nd pairing type. What we needed was a bonefide 1st pairing and I don't see how this trade does that for us.

So I had a thought. Compare this to what an older, more broken down McDonagh got us. Granted he had an extra year on his contract and we had to give up JT Miller. But still...

How does Trouba compare to McD when we traded him?

I think this trade is a pretty good indicator that they will extend Kreider unless they get really good value. But I like kreider and would definitely prefer him over a low first.
I thought the opposite. I think now that we gave up the 20th it's a good indication they will trade him to get another 1st. Guess we will know Friday!

Pionk is a group II with arbitration rights. EvolvingWild has a cap projection spreadsheet. They have Pionk at nearly $3M per in a 2 year contract. Another guy named Matt Cane used to put together the spreedsheet but the Devils recently hired him.

Probably not quite as good, McDonagh was a top-10 defenseman in the NHL at the time.

In all seriousness, how in the world does this trade get accepted? I mean, really. How? Like, doesn't someone step in and say "uh yeah this is one sided sir"
It's technically a trade for his rights (though he's an RFA), and Winnipeg wouldn't let teams talk to his agent about what he's looking for, so I guess the Rangers felt confident about their ability to sign him and gave the best concrete offer while other teams would've put together better packages if they could've gauged any interest from Trouba in signing with them

Great price, and this will definitely make them re-evaluate the next few weeks. Interesting times, exciting times ! And it's about time !

I totally get it from Winnipeg’s perspective. They couldn’t take back $$$, and they couldn’t keep their player. He would have never signed with them and it would have been nylander with no resolution. They HAD to move him before the draft and I’d guess this is probably as good as they’d get.

Rangers took advantage. The big question isn’t really value of the trade but whether you want a 10% of the cap locked up in Trouba vs another position. I bet a lot of teams were asking that when considering what to give up.

There is just no way that is true.

Something must have went on behind the scenes that we don't know about, hopefully it comes to light over the next few days.

As for his future, Trouba wasn’t ready to discuss whether he was open to signing a long-term deal with the Rangers.

“We haven’t really worried about it. I’m just trying to get through the night and enjoy it and everything that’s going on,” said Trouba. “I’m sure we’ll deal with it in the morning and start those talks in the morning.”

“But I’m super excited for a new hockey opportunity and a new place. It’s different, so that’s something you’re naturally excited about. I haven’t thought too much into it, but I know a couple of guys there. You know about the city and playing at MSG on the road, for me, was one of my favourite spots to play. Just with the history and the crowd and the buzz, it’s just a whole new world. I’m excited for new avenues of life and new experiences.”

Boo Nieves is one.

“It’s a great opportunity for myself and my fiancée,” said Trouba, whose fiancée is about to start her residency in her quest to become a doctor. “Her career is as important as my career. We both are passionate about different things and our goal from a couple of years back was we wanted to make this work. And we decided we wanted to make this work. This is part of it, to be realistic with you.
