Do you honestly think they didn’t target him because they think he’ll be a good player?
Absolutely. I think this FO targets players for character and literally doesn't care if that player can play. They've done it twice this off-season.

They didn't care when it was Dan Girardi.

So, here's the issue: every single complaint about how this is a bad move at its core boils down to the fact that this makes the Rangers (arguably) a worse team on the ice this year.

No value is assigned to:

a) Providing leadership/demonstrating how to be a professional.
b) Instilling confidence in a young/fragile team.
c) Teaching the skills that can be learned (e.g. defensive positioning, clearing the crease) vs. those that come naturally (e.g. skill, size).
d) Trade arbitrage – acquiring a desirable playoff piece when he is less valuable (beginning of the season when everyone's healthy and his cap hit counts 100%) to then have him available at the TDL (when teams are more likely to pay up to "go all in" and the cap hit has been reduced).

I am a definitively anti-goon poster and fan, but I like the move, because he is a tough player, who's been to the Cup, can play a regular shift, and who was clearly brought here to further the rebuild in the long term. They were interested in players of this ilk in FA to serve the purposes listed above, but other teams went out and offered the possible candidates 3 year deals at AAVs of $3MM+, so the Rangers smartly bowed out of the bidding and instead picked up a similar (arguably better) player for a low pick, which they will likely recoup, and quite possibly upgrade. Excellent GMing.

If you hate this deal, it's because you're judging it from the POV of someone who still hasn't embraced the fact that the team is rebuilding, and are concerned only with how each player acquired will help the team win the next game – rather than 2-3 games a season or two down the line.

The deterrent argument is kinda old and dumb.
How about we just call it what it is and say he have someone to kick your ass if you target our players?

The fact that this move is a positive in light of what has transpired with this team speaks volumes lol.

E: This move was made due to a poor prospect showing at Traverse IMO

Huh?

How is trading for insurance on D prove that? The guy is a UFA the end of year, and probably won't even finish the season with the team

Also, where is our Zucc news you teased??

Talks are tough, Zucc knows what he wants this time.

I think in the back of his head he has a wish, he really wants to play for the Penguins. And I believe the Pens will be interested when time comes.

But not if the Rangers come up with the $$$ and years...

I beg to differ.
Why do you think these tournaments exist?

It's for prospect evaluation and clearly these kids are not ready thus the McQuaid trade..
The guys that are going to actually be fighting for the defense spots aren’t there. Traverse is essentially a training camp to get younger players ready and up to speed for real training camp

Prospects playing against other prospects is hardly a determining factor in what a team’s opening lineup will look like. Many of these kids are thrown into a short 4-5 day tournament whom have never player together and have zero chemistry.

This trade has NOTHING to do with the tournament. Zero. It has to do with having a young team that we cant afford to get bullied and be a detriment to their development. The youth needs to go out and there against grown men and feel comfortable. McQuaid does this

Traverse City wasn't going so well so we brought in Adam McQuaid to keep 'em on their toes.

They did a nearly identical move at Valley Forge when they brought in Baron von Stuben but improved upon it as the Prussian easily would have fetched a higher draft pick.

I definitely agree with the last 2 sentences but not so much the rest.

Some of the biggest events in the world (Olympics) basically have their players "just thrown in there and have no chemistry" for the most part so this shouldn't be all that much different other than not having an extra week of practice and being on a much smaller scale.

These tournaments are a lot more important than you seem to think IMO, especially when you're a rebuilding team.

There are decisions that have to be made on if these kids going to play on the big club or not and if they play poorly in any tournament that comes right before TC, I have to believe that's going to impact personnel decisions.

How could it not??

It's about filling a role on the RD or are you just going to look at the tuffness factor?

Who did you see at Traverse that might be ready to take that spot?

Answer...NOBODY

Disagree completely with all of this. You are comparing the Traverse City Prospect Tournament to the Olympics in which Countries like Canada have the best players in the world that can single handedly win games. Sheer insanity.

I never said these Tournaments werent important. Never said it nor did I imply it. Hajek had a good tournament. Howden did too. They could have terrible camps with the big club though, then what? Lindgren was just ok, but maybe he has a better camp. The team structure and system is being implemented in these guys are getting minutes with NHL Pros.

I mean who played “poorly”? Did you watch any of the games? I have watched for the last handful of years with the streams and its always bad camera angles, hard to tell who is who, and with no commentary. I have read some of the comments about how it went and there is nothing to indicate one guy played terrible, or good, to the next one. Its a PROSPECT TOURNAMENT to get more experience while being evaluated against other prospects.

McQuaid wasn’t acquired because of Traverse City. Just stop with the nonsense

This is ridiculous. Literally none of these defensman were supposed to make the jump to the NHL this year except for maybe Hajek who guess what had a really good tourny and plays the left side of defense. I didn't know Joey Keane was poised to make a jump to the nhl just the year after he was picked in the third round very impressive. Well guess not now because he didn't play great in a meanignless prospect tournament

The jobs are going to get figured out at training camp---not at the Traverse tournament. Of our d-men there the only two that have any kind of shot at playing in the NHL this year are Hajek and Lindgren and IMO both will probably spend at least half the year in Hartford if not more and if not the whole year.
