So, here's the issue: every single complaint about how this is a bad move at its core boils down to the fact that this makes the Rangers (arguably) a worse team on the ice this year.
No value is assigned to:
a) Providing leadership/demonstrating how to be a professional.
b) Instilling confidence in a young/fragile team.
c) Teaching the skills that can be learned (e.g. defensive positioning, clearing the crease) vs. those that come naturally (e.g. skill, size).
d) Trade arbitrage – acquiring a desirable playoff piece when he is less valuable (beginning of the season when everyone's healthy and his cap hit counts 100%) to then have him available at the TDL (when teams are more likely to pay up to "go all in" and the cap hit has been reduced).
I am a definitively anti-goon poster and fan, but I like the move, because he is a tough player, who's been to the Cup, can play a regular shift, and who was clearly brought here to further the rebuild in the long term. They were interested in players of this ilk in FA to serve the purposes listed above, but other teams went out and offered the possible candidates 3 year deals at AAVs of $3MM+, so the Rangers smartly bowed out of the bidding and instead picked up a similar (arguably better) player for a low pick, which they will likely recoup, and quite possibly upgrade. Excellent GMing.
If you hate this deal, it's because you're judging it from the POV of someone who still hasn't embraced the fact that the team is rebuilding, and are concerned only with how each player acquired will help the team win the next game – rather than 2-3 games a season or two down the line.
