The question for the Leafs js two fold. If they don't sign him by trade deadline they could

a) trade him for a kings ransom....think something like unprotected first plus a team's top prospect plus a middle six winger.

Or

b) hold him for the pmayoff run, with the risk you do to win Jack shit and he walks for nothing.

One thing is a certainty. He is making bank next year. Like 12 mil bank.

That's the strategy they will go with for 1 year. No one is getting traded of those 4. They'll let Tavares walk the year after.
This is how I see it playing out as well. Either JT signs for less than half he's getting now to stay in Toronto or he can kick rocks.

Let's say Nylander only gets 10.

That's 24 mill left for the Leafs to signed.

5 forwards, but only 1 is needed for the top 6.

4 defenseman.(maybe 3 with Timmins) including 2 top 4 dmen.

1 goalie.

Of course that's no extras.

9 players at an average of 2.5 per.

That isn't the worst decision, but it's not really a good one.

Next season will be tough for the Leafs if that's their approach.

Yep. There's an absolute valid debate to be had whether it is the right or wrong thing to do. But I can 100% guarantee, that is what they'll do. There's no way on this earth, that they'll let Nylander walk, nor trade him, just to save on that 1 season.

Realistically they will live with taking a step back next season. Contenders do it all the time, Chicago had to after their first cup, Washington missed the playoffs one or two times, same with Tampa

Once Tavares is off the books, the flexibility will go up by a lot. They definitely need to look at improving the defense, though. There are a lot of forward prospects coming up but the defensive pipeline is barren

I think 10 mil is a pipe dream unless Nylander agrees to takes a discount.
Pretty hard for the best player on their team to come in that low.

Tavares should be making less than $5m on his next contract, 3x$3m or something like that.

This will more than just swap Nylander and Tavares positions on the salary cap structure, because Tavares will be making less than Willy’s $7m today

If Tavares remains PPG he'll easily make at least 7 million.

Who cares about Tavares. You just get Nylander signed. Deal with everything later.

That’s obviously going to happen, I’m just putting all the rival teams fans minds at ease, because they are very concerned about the Leafs cap management

What's your best offer for Nylander?
Top 10 forward in the NHL who is still getting better and wants to remain in Toronto..there will not be too many offers the leafs would entertain. He will sign in Toronto

Tough to say…. I’d say tkachuk is a realistic comparison contract wise….. but maybe nylander says to hell with that I want 10+ since Tavares matthews and marner got it

They have cap space, but they have a lot of holes to fill too
If Nylander scores 100 points he will want more than Marner's cap hit. Probably close to $12m long term. Shannahan will sign him to whatever he asks for.
