Looking at pts/game production over the last three seasons (20-21 to 22-23), regular vs playoffs:

Matthews: 1.29 to 1.00 - drop of 0.29
Marner: 1.27 to 1.04 - drop of 0.23
Nylander: 0.98 to 1.00 increase of 0.02
Tavares: 0.96 to 0.74 - drop of 0.22

Benn (career) 0.82 to 0.75.
And it gets even worse when you do their entire careers.

Most players pts/game falls off in the playoffs. Difference is Matthews/Marner/Nylander all fall off much more than their contract peers.
Leading up to this year, Nylander's PPG in the regular season is .825 and is .800 in the playoffs. In the last four seasons combined, his playoff PPG has actually gone up (.967 compared to .950).

I get anger over the deal, but no one should be surprised. This was inevitable after Dubas was fired and Shanahan called the big three to tell them them they weren't going anywhere. Matthews was going to get signed no matter what. Nylander was going to get signed no matter what. Marner is going to get signed no matter what.

They'll all be here for four if not eight more years. If you can't make peace with that, buy an EKG machine to monitor your heart.

Yea tbh I was shocked Nylander's actually went up. The other 3 though, yikes.
For his career (and in the last four years, for that matter), his percentage drop of points in the playoffs is less significant than David Pastrnak. Yikes, indeed (yes, my yikes is sarcastic).

I get the conversation of how much we have tied up next year in four forwards, it's certainly a talking point. That's a lot of money. The idea that we should let these guys walk is a bit much, the drive them into the ground, they aren't good players talk that is so endless.

What was the alternative to this? There are insiders (Friedman is one) who have said that Treliving explored trading him for a defenseman and there wasn't a trade that made sense, people were unwilling to trade high end pieces for a guy who might walk. Friedman has also said that they even looked at letting him walk (terrible idea given his caliber, but I like due diligence) and using that money to shore up defense and/or goaltending, and they didn't see a scenario that was better than signing Nylander (which again, makes sense given his caliber). You can let him walk out the door for nothing, but it's a terrible idea.

Interestingly enough, this deal likely gives them more leverage with Marner. If you let Willie walk, you gotta keep Marner at all costs. Now you don't and you have more leverage than without. Further, and I think @Sypher04 mentioned this earlier, it's pretty clear who they think is the problem contract here and they are willing to go another year piecing this business together like we have for the last few years and not sign JT unless the cap is up and he takes significantly less money. The window isn't this year or next, even though I'd prefer not losing early in the playoffs again, the window is longer than that. Further, even though we lost last in incredibly disappointing fashion last year, there was progress in the playoffs.

I know this isn't the screaming and moaning and loud noises that make this place go around, sensibility isn't often the soup du jour here, so sorry, I can yell a little bit later if it helps.

That's 2 of 5 years you have Matty signed. Needed to get him a 6 or more but he refused and got his shorter term.

I try to just enjoy the ride through the posts on forums.hfboards.com/forums/toronto-maple-leafs.17 and I mostly do but man the 'definition of insanity' ones just grate so bad

Full career:

Matthews: 1.13 to 0.88 drop of 0.25
Marner: 1.09 to 0.94 drop of 0.15
Nylander: 0.83 to 0.80 drop of 0.03
Tavares: 0.95 to 0.80 drop of 0.15

Since JT joined the Leafs:

Matthews: 1.22 to 1.00 drop of 0.22
Marner: 1.22 to 0.92 drop of 0.30
Nylander: 0.88 to 0.86 drop of 0.02
Tavares: 0.98 to 0.71 drop of 0.27

They change a bit, but not really much worse. Most noticeable are Marner (worse the last three) and Tavares (worse since coming here). The only one who doesn't have a big drop from regular to playoffs is Willy, who actually shows an increase the last three years.

I hate these statistically small sample size stats .If one good or bad game can drastically change the stats outcome then it's not much of a stat imo. I'm referring to year by year or 3 year samples taken out to try and make a point .
Any kind of points stats imo need to be over a 50 game period or they don't mean much .

It seems some people are missing the positives of this contract. If Nylander finishes where he is now top 5ish in scoring then Marner can't ask for close to Matthews deal he will have to settle for similar money to Nylander's.
Interesting point though what happens if Marner blow Nylander out of the water production wise next year?

So Marmer is the best playoff producer of the 3 technically? Interesting considering what is talked about around here lol

last 3 years? No , 24 games . Just a pet peeve of mine when i see small sample sizes thrown out to use a stat to confirm their bias's . In the case of careers , 50 is barely reached for the trio . Tavares more .

it's a worth a trip to the Flyers board and the Gauthier trade thread for an idea of how fans of the team like having Torts as their coach
