it's a worth a trip to the Flyers board and the Gauthier trade thread for an idea of how fans of the team like having Torts as their coach

ok, the post you replied to was their career numbers
I know , tried to qualify that in the post without having to go back furher and quote the posts that were smaller sample sizes .

So what your saying here is in year 8 he won’t be good enough to get a 7.5 million contract but we’re gonna pay him 11.5?

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Hence why we should get a lower AAV for 8 years instead of 7.

So we got Auston "Superman" Matthews, William "Spiderman" Nylander, Mitch "Robin" Marner and John "Batman" Tavares at forward...too bad we have Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny playing defense and Elmer Fudd playing goal...:sarcasm:
Elmer was 2nd star for the week across the NHL. Maybe he has a miracle 1/2 season in him, much like Campbell in his 1/2 season start with us. If that happened we”d be looking good.

I'm not saying Tre gambled on it, or that it will happen this time.

Just responding to the posters who say "he won't be worth 11.5 in the last couple of years". It depends on how he's doing, but also on what the expectation for 11.5 is 6 or 7 years from now.

The cap could be 200M and Willy putting up 150 points, or the cap could be 90 and Willy on LTIR. What I gave was a reasonable scenario?
Fair enough

With this contract, we as the fans are expecting him to play this way for the duration. He is at his peak right now and the moment he slips up, we are going to lose our shit.

If he keeps playing like this though, he will be worth every penny.

If they win once all will be forgiven, but the chances are good that Nylander falls off imo.

but imo we did your post was saying the equivalent 7 year deal was 13 something my point was to get the same money you also should include what he would re-sign for in year 8 on his next contract. so a team doesn't need to go 13+ for Nylander to make as much on a 7 year deal. I expect if Nylander made UFA he would get an offer in the 12+ range.

I don't think he gets 7M+ at 35 though - so the Leafs deal is objectively better than what anyone else was offering for Nylander

yea but that's if they only went 12 @12.5 they only need to get 4 million deal. and I'm with you in terms of thinking Nylander wont be worth 11.5 in the back half of this contract but I do believe he will get another deal after.

Realistically you hope he can be like this for 4-5 years of the deal. Nylander hasn't had any major injuries and takes care of his body, maybe he ages like Pavelski?

If they win the cup, yes, they're all immortal at that point.

Nylander was not getting 12.5M x 7 on the open market

Who do you think is paying him that?

Gaudreau got 9.75M for reference. Now all of a sudden Nylander is getting 12.5M?

Nylander now tied with Reilly as having committed their careers.to the team. We can keep going back and forth on the aav, but imo it's nice to see guys commit their futures to the team/city. The song and dance of constant contract negotiations gets pretty old

7 mil is going to be a lot different 7-8 years from now in terms of cap %.

So does Tavares get 7M at 35? He signed his 11M contract 7 years ago at that point.

If Marner blows well past 100 points it's a good problem for the team to have then
True though Nylander could put up like 70-80 points next year so he wouldn't even need to do that. I dont think Nylander has out produced Marner any season of his career so far so not far fetched

I don't think postc contract production is taken into consideration as much as pre. Ie Huberdeau didn't reset what a 10 mil guy was because of this year

I don't think Marner will be much in a position to ask for a bigger aav raise than what Matthews just did (under 2mil). He's already in the upper echelon of winger comparables with his current contract

I don't even think that he finishes at 120.
But wouldn't be surprised if last season marks the start of a 6-8 year run of 85-105,
I figure he'll hover around that mid 80s point mark for a few years then decline

When someone looks at the team record books in 10 years, it will be dominated by Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Reilly. For a team with a history as long as the Leafs, I find that to be a pretty interesting fact.

Good luck Will. If you don't perform, the hate from the fanbase will be intense!

That's 2 of 5 years you have Matty signed. Needed to get him a 6 or more but he refused and got his shorter term.
Again, I hate to be sensible, but the term was mutual. He likely would've went to 8, but not at the cap hit we were willing to give him. We didn't like the cap hit he wanted for 8, so we were willing to shorten the deal.

We also have no idea what happens after his next deal, but we do know that we have a year before anyone else does to negotiate with him. He could easily sign another deal in Toronto.
